Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Ramesh Ponnuru---Inexperience. Palin has been governor for about two minutes. Thanks to McCains decision, Palin could be commander-in-chief next year. That may strike people as a reckless choice; it strikes me that way. And McCain's age raised the stakes on this issue. Tokenism. Can anyone say with a straight face that Palin would have gotten picked if she were a man?

As usual, the thundering herd of GOP-lemmings have already marched off in lockstep agreement that McCain's choice of Palin has re-shaken up this race. It hasn't. Its merely provided them a salve from having to face the fact that Obama took their entire smear campaign and shoved it right up McCain's ass last night with his unifying appeal, both to America's past and our collective wishes for an improved future.

Obama just called out McCain's judgment in front of 38 million Americans and what's McCain's next move? He picks an anonymous former beauty contestant, turned mother, turned PTA member, turned mayor of 6000 in Alaska, the great crucible of American political learning, became governor because she ran against the corrupt GOP establishment in her own state.

I already know the first question I'd ask her in a debate: Governor Palin, before John McCain nominated you to potentially be a heartbeat away from the Presidency, have you ever personally met any current world leader, and how extensive has your travel been as it regards gaining personal experience on how others live outside the United States?

No one need attack Palin because of her gender. They only need to ask themselves who she have been chosen by McCain were she male? Is this his "judgment's call" of the singular American most capable of sitting at his side and potentially replacing him should tragedy arise?

Looking at any other Republican out there, who can honestly say Palin is the very best the GOP has to offer on this day?

"would she have been chosen if she was a man?"

"would she have been chosen if she was a man?"

Is this some sort of trick question?

Cheney was chosen to add gravitas to Bush's appeal. The Big Dick came from a solidly conservative, tiny state like Palin.

Not unlike with the Bush/Quayle - Dukakis/Benston race... are you voting hoping someone dies or voting hoping someone lives?

Palin probably would NOT have been chosed, IMO, had she been a dude. That said, she hits on the other criteria... things like conservative, outside the beltway, fighting corruption, pro-life, a governor vs a legislator, youthful to serve as a contrast to the old dude with the white hair, etc.

On the face of it, McCain has failed the ultimate test that any presidential candidate must face in picking a running mate: selecting someone who is unambiguously qualified to be president.

Palin is a talented politician who has both support among conservatives and a compelling personal story. But her short resume in Alaska politics and her nonexistent national track record will make it impossible for McCain to argue with a straight face that she was the most qualified person he could have selected.

McCain panicked, pure and simple. Now the GOP-bots are claiming Palin to be of equal heft to Obama. Funny, I don't remember her predicting the foolishness of Bush's Iraq invasion beforehand in 2002, nor have I heard her claim that the hunt for Al Qaeda was prematurely back-burnered by the detour. Didn't hear that she spent one second learning how the FEDERAL government worked from the US Congress, nor have I been told about all the significant legislation with her imprimatur during her lengthy two year stewardship of Alaska. Also how many nukes did she and Senator Lugar secure from the potential clutches of terrorists?

The only thing I see is the fact she has different physical parts than does John McCain. Of course McCain's "judgment" tells him that Hillary backers will flock to his new gal without noticing that she stands on the wrong side of most issues that Hillary Clinton champions, such as women's choice, equal pay, and children's healthcare. He just figures that being a woman is enough evidently.

And Obama can't describe how he looks different than those who've preceeded him without being accused of playing issue-politics. Sarah Palin's the latest prima facia example of McCain putting party over country. If Sarah Palin is the most qualified Republican politician worthy of being his running mate, what does that say about the state of the Party and the people it sends to Washington? Maybe if he wishes hard enough no one will notice.

when the GOPppers embrace Affirmative Action they do it in a really big way, don't they?

But she gave Dobson a woodie, so the GOP will toss economic and security leadership in the trash again to appease the talibaptists.

Hey Mitt, Mike and Rudi, not happy?-grow a pair.

Of boobs, that is.

Can anyone say with a straight face that 0bama would have gotten picked if he were a 100% white man? If you're sincere the answer has to be "No".

Can anyone say with a straight face that 0bama would have gotten picked if he were a 100% white man?

Compare Obama's life up until now with George W. Bush's until he ran for the presidency and the answer is so clear a blind man can see it. A legacy C student versus Law Review Editor/magna cum laude graduate, 10 year law professor, and a 8 year state senator, and a 4 year US Senator?

Bush was a self-admitted drunk running businesses into the ground until turning 40, and if his name wasn't Bush do you think he's qualified to be POTUS? Look in the mirror fool!

Shorter than your usual wordy posts Tony but you sidestepped a direct answer to my question:

"Can anyone say with a straight face that 0bama would have gotten picked if he were a 100% white man?"

I didn't ask about his education or his unimpressive legislative resume the question is if he was 100% white would he even be the Dems nominee or even better would he have lasted past Super Tuesday?
