Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Russian forces broadened their crushing offensive against Georgia on Monday, flying devastating bombing runs against retreating Georgian tanks and artillery leaving one breakaway province and pushing into Georgia from a second breakaway province in the west.

For what its worth, at least this conflagration wasn't preceded by a bunch of masturbating chickenhawks spewing forth their patented televised verbal spunk over operation "shock and awe".

This conflict is getting nastier -- and it is about the oil.

If British Petroleum is being bombed (as shown in link below) then let Britain and other European nations take care of it by going after Russia. We've shed enough blood.

Here's a link to a British newspaper -

THE PIPELINE WAR

Okay, will Russia create a no man's land around its pet provinces before pulling back, just scoop up half of georgia, or take it all back?

Take it all back. It may get scary from here on out.

kg.... poor poor fool, not a fuckng clue.

Meanwhile.... Congress will not allow offshore drilling and drilling in a mudhole in Alaska.

Russia takes the lead in the energy war.

Al Gore proposes carbon credits.... blah blah blah.

Wake up America. The country that controls the oil is the new superpower. And it's not the USA.

Georgia should stop the ordered fighting and go immediately to a guerilla war. their military stands no chance against Russia... Hell their military would stand no chance against Iraq's military. Take it underground and pop them off at every opportunity, but standing toe to toe with the Russians is only going to end badly.

Russian Nukes in Georgia.....

President was informed immediately on Friday, when we received news of the first two SS-21 Russian missile launchers into Georgian territory. He immediately -- this was at the Great Hall -- he immediately met with President Putin. They had a discussion. The President then engaged with his national security staff continuously over the last two days. He has spoken with -- again with Putin that evening. He then talked with President Medvedev yesterday evening, as well as President Saakashvili. Secretary Rice has spoken repeatedly with President Saakashvili, as well as with her Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Lavrov, and many European leaders.

I'm still not following why Georgia would initiate something like this.

Did they think Russia wouldn't step in?

"I'm still not following why Georgia would initiate something like this."

They didn't. It happened exactly as Russia planned.

August 2nd:

www.alertnet.org

"It said shooting came from three ethnic Georgian villages, but Georgia blamed the separatists for provoking the clashes.

The commander of Georgia's peacekeeping force in the region, Mamuka Kurashvili, was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying South Ossetian peacekeepers shot at a Georgian village and suspected Russian peacekeepers of taking part.

Georgian peacekeepers and police officers returned fire and repelled the attack, he said.

Georgia's Interior Ministry said nine civilians in the Georgian villages in South Ossetia were injured, while Tskhinvali said up to 15 were injured on its side, up from seven reported on Friday. Kokoity put the number of injured at 13.

"This is another attempt by the separatist side to involve Georgia in a military conflict," Georgia's state minister in charge of re-integration, Temur Iakobashvili, told reporters in Tbilisi before leaving to visit the shootout area.

"The Georgian side was forced to return fire," he added."

"drilling in a mudhole in Alaska."

Now there be a fine piece of trivializing. Yessir! Fine indeed. The Ministry of Disinformation and Propoganda just may incorporate its lexicon.

King_Crusader,

I hope plague, famine, and war all remember to wipe their feet on your "Welcome" mat when they land at your door.

Russia just announced a cease fire, everyone panicking can go back to their usual neurosis.

But since then...

By Steve Thomma and Tom Lasseter, McClatchy Newspapers 1 hour, 13 minutes ago

TBILISI, Georgia Russian leaders said Tuesday that they'd called off their military strikes against targets in Georgia , but bombing persisted in much of the country and the United States recommended that American citizens leave Georgia because of the continued attacks.

Russian planes bombed the town of Gori, which sits between South Ossetia and Georgia's capital, Tbilisi , and helicopters launched missiles at surrounding villages. Smoke could be seen climbing from the area, where helicopters were swooping around a ridgeline and, in red flashes, sending down a rain of missile strikes.

Rogue-

AP reports that those bombings took place several hours before the order, and any such order takes some time to make it through command and control to the troops.

By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA and MISHA DZHINDZHIKHASHVILI, Associated Press Writers 1 minute ago

TBILISI, Georgia - Russia ordered a halt to the war in Georgia on Tuesday, after five days of air and land attacks that sent Georgia's army into headlong retreat and left towns, military bases and homes in the U.S. ally smoldering. Georgia insisted that Russian forces were still bombing and shelling.

Despite the televised order by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Russia launched an offensive Tuesday in Abkhazia, sending tanks, armored personnel carriers and artillery toward the breakaway region.

Georgian troops were forced out of their last stronghold in the separatist province, said Maj. Gen. Anatoly Zaitsev, a defense official in Abkhazia. The claim that Georgian forces were gone could not immediately be confirmed.

Why is the world press eerily silent on the number of russian casualties, civilian casualties, short rounds, bombs that missed their targets, etc?
Where are all of the headlines that are generated by Georgian doctors that are taking in the casualties (and claiming children as the victims)?

The big question is what terms Russia will settle for. Georgia took a huge gamble and lost. How much will it cost them?

A much bigger concern is how this will impact the rest of Russia's "near abroad". Their press is making lots of statements about going after Ukraine and the Baltic countries. Poland is already agreeing to signing a missile shield accord with us. Should be very interesting to see how events unfold. Does look like NATO screwed up by not taking in Georgia and Ukraine. That would have stopped Georgia from taking their gamble and stopped Russia from trying to take over Georgia. Oh well, makes for interesting times.

Chair,

Are you going to be around for a while?

For about an hour.

Rogue-

You left this out of your AP article-

And hours before the order, Russian jets bombed the crossroads city of Gori, near the separatist region of South Ossetia.

For about an hour.

Politically Incorrect carttons! They don't make em like that anymore.

Nobody has an opinion on why the world press isn't reporting war casualties, collateral damage, etc?

Too dangerous to travel freely?

The same could have been said for the journos that weren't embedded in Iraq or Afghanistan.

I believe there's a double standard at play.

"why the world press isn't reporting war casualties, collateral damage, etc?"

Actually, it is. At least as much as they can since there are few credible reports. Even the AP and Reuters are putting out what they have.

I'm not trying to be argumentitive, but why? When did "credible reports" become so important? They run with every story they hear in Iraq or Afghanistan, especially when there are kids, wedding parties, women, friendly fire, misplace bombs or artillery, heavy casualties, one lost jet, one burning tank, etc

Am I to believe there aren't reporters there? Am I to believe that they haven't had enough time to send reporters there? Am I to believe no photog has seen a dead russian soldier, burning tank, plane or copter part, etc?

The 'unembedded' reporters in Iraq and Afghanistan had advance notice of the invasion.

The Russians took everyone by surprise. Bush sat next to Putin during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics and chatted amiably. So, I doubt even he had any idea Russia would invade.

Video of the families running from bombs and crying over their loved ones deaths in Georgia were sad.

Politically Incorrect carttons! They don't make em like that anymore.

I laughed uproariously every time the Japanese beetle was depicted - his singing was absolutely hilarious!

Also, the 2 drunken Herons at the end was a great touch.

So how many days do we give the world press to mobilize and get to where the fighting is and report? A day? 2 days? 3 days?

I call bullshit.

Open your eyes, people.

This conflict was deliberately started by Georgia (in conjunction with the Neocons' agenda) with the intent to divert Russia's attention away from the real goal -- Neocons plan for an attack on Iran. ISREAL is in Georgia helping too.

If you can't bother reading this very interesting and informative article, at least scroll down to about the 14th or so paragraph (after all the stuff about the military buildup outside of Iran) where the article starts talking about South Osettia and Georgia starting a military attack on them.

This is a MUST read. Seriously. It is reported in a European business website. Sad we have to go overseas to read this stuff.

REAL REASON FOR SOUTH OSETTIA CONFLICT - divert Russia's attention away from Iran

If you all won't read the entire above link in my 3:51 p.m., at the very least go and start reading the article from this point on -- and keep an open mind.

...A strategic diversion has been created for Russia. The Republic of Georgia, with US backing, is actively preparing for war on South Ossetia. The South Ossetia capital has been shelled and a large Georgian tank force has been heading towards the border. Russia has stated that it will not sit by and allow the Georgians to attack South Ossetia. The Russians are great chess players and this game may not turn out so well for the neo-cons....

"When did "credible reports" become so important?"

101, that's not the issue. There are lots of reports on casualties. The Russians, however, aren't allowing any non-Russian press into the area they control. The West is therefore relying on their claims and those of the Georgians. But it is there. Read the Polish press, the Ukrainian press, etc. They have pictures also.

CC, I did read that article. And others like it. See, I have this choice. Do I believe those articles, or do I believe what the East European press is saying. Being a "globalist", I'm definitely inclined to the latter. Yes, I do know about neo-cons. And their agenda. And their wishes. I also know they are _not_ as all-powerful as they would have to be to be the string-pullers the article implies. Most importantly, however, I am _very_ aware of Putin's agenda and how powerful he is. Which is something you seem to totally disregard.

FYI

CC, I did read that article. And others like it. See, I have this choice. Do I believe those articles, or do I believe what the East European press is saying. Being a "globalist", I'm definitely inclined to the latter.

So you're an admitted globalist. So are the Neocons.
No comment from me as you have the right to believe as you wish. But if you have read any of my posts in the past you know I am adamently against globalism and feel it has been the main factor in the economic destruction of our country under Bush and the eliminating of America's middle class -- once the backbone of our nation.

Okay, I guess I then can take it your answer is "NO" -- you believe this Georgian conflict was started with NO intention at all by the Neocons (both here and in Isreal's government) to divert attention from the huge military build-up for a possible attack on Iran prior to Bush leaving office.

Okay, let's just say for the sake of my country that you are correct. Seriously, I will be more than happy to see it turn out that you're right and I am wrong. Funny, Sean Hannity is on the radio now pumping up his audience against Russia -- just as he did prior to our attack on Iraq. Guess it's just a mere coincidence, right?

Okay, we'll agree to disagree. :)

"globalism"

CC, by "globalist" I mean that I believe that the world consists of more than the US, that other nations have a purpose and wishes/desires. And that ofttimes, their viewpoint is not the same as ours and sometimes is even correct. Sorry if my meaning is different from yours.

And thank you for asking me to explain before you labelled me a "neo-con". Especially since I spent so much time arguing with "neo-cons" before the runup to the Iraq war. Loved the core of their philosophy. Didn't believe it would work in the real world. Knew they would fuck up Iraq. So, yeah, we'll agree to disagree.

I agree with Dimitri Simes who stated: "Saakashvili was discouraged from attacking Russian troops in South Ossetia but he clearly never was told point blank 'If you do it, you are on your own,'".

Also with Charles Kupchan that "I think in many respects Saakashvili got too close to the United States and the United States got too close to Saakashvili," Kupchan said. "It made him overreach, it made him feel at the end of the day that the West would come to his assistance if he got into trouble."

This is where the concept of "neo-con intervention" started. And they probably did have some kind of hand in this. However, this situation gives Bush a black eye and a loss of belief in Europe. Which is the exact opposite of what is needed if Bush wants to attack Iran. Bush may not be smart enough to recognize that. Neo-cons, for sure, do.

FYI and CC, by globalist, which side is the controlling one? The NEOCONs through some plan to set things in place through domination of the world or the other side with the UN in charge with possibly Bill Clinton as the next head?

Is the world ready for it now? I really doubt it because there are still countries who would not cede their sovereignty to that global power. Even the Labour Party of England won't give up that in the near future. Right now the Muslim nations want sharia law and that doesn't allow other religions to co-exist.

I think this skirmish/war is more akin to sept 1939 between Germany and Poland or Jun 1941 between Germany and Russia. The Germans provoked the two countries and claimed that both sides started the hostilities, even planting Polish soldiers (from the camps) on the front.

Who are you going to believe? That this is a front for the start of a push into Iran? Or Russian just flexing its muscles which it has been doing since the split up in 92. The area has been a hotbed of problems since then.

Ward, my usage of "globalist" merely means I view what the world says and thinks, not merely what the US does.

The UN isn't about to take control of the world, isn't planning to, never will. The US, Russia, China, France, etc. would all have to agree. They can't even agree on whether the world is round.

BTW, Germany didn't "provoke" Russia. They signed a treaty with Russia, dividing Poland between them.

As for your core question, CC pretty obviously believes this is a prelude to an invasion of Iran. I believe this is Putin doing a test run on how the West will react to his grand plan for invading Estonia, Ukraine, etc. Good old Russia.
