Colleagues and friends of Bruce Ivins, the Army anthrax specialist who committed suicide last week as the FBI prepared to arrest him, believe he didn't have the motive or means to create the lethal powder sent by mail in 2001. "I really don't think he's the guy. I say to the FBI, 'Show me your evidence,' " said Jeffrey J. Adamovicz, former director of an Army bacteriology division.

Hatfil just got a multi-million dollar settlement from Uncle Sam and all the government did was say he's a "Person of Interest." The Gov't was about ready to actually charge him, as well as pursue the death penalty... if he were innocent like Hatfil, his payout would have probably been even larger...

He killed himself because he did it.

He did have the means--he worked with the stuff.

He also admitted to having a "spill" in the lab and he cleaned it up without telling anyone. When he admitted to it later he also said (reportedly) that he did not test the area of the spill to see if it was really cleaned up.

That is a huge deal. And this was reportedly in 2001 when he had the spill on the lab table.

The part that bothers me is the motive. They claim he had a cure for anthrax and that he could have his cure somehow be thrust to the forefront and he could be rich.

But he needed the anthrax out there to affect people so he could be the hero with his cure.

This just seems so over the top and diabolical--straight out of a Batman movie or something.

Maybe he is the guy--but the motive is just not compelling.

His suicide is more to his guilt than the motive.

Nice story. If the U.S. Government had any credibility with which to stand on left I might be inclined to believe it.

Lied about 2 wars repeatably... check

Did everything they could to shut down sept 11 investigation regardless of facts one way or another... check

Warrantless spying for political reasons far in excess of anything Nixon ever did.... Check

Dept. of Fatherland Security... check

And these c#cksucker expect me to believe them now? Fuck you...

The timing of this suicide with the settlement with the man the FBI falsely identified and ruined the life of makes me more than suspicicous.

Unlike the kneejerkers that will screech that his suicide is an admission of guilt (it isn't) I want to see the evidence that they have.

Because people only commit suicide when they are guilty of something. Nothing else in their personal life could make them want to kill themself.

And everyone in gitmo is guilty too. Except for the ones they released.

Does anyone recall McCain claiming a link to Iraq on the anthrax scare. He was showing his good judgement! Do we need any more of his good judgements?

"May have come from Iraq."
Keeriest, it may have come from Ishkabibil.
He does tend to blow it out his ass.
A lot.

bullshit..

In this country ecery man is guilty until he proves he's innocent. That's the way prosecutors and the court's work. If you're rich enough you can not only defend yourself, but beat the Sate at its own game. It just takes millions of dollars.

I've learned that just about anything robtheasshole posts is just about 180 from reality...

I don't understand is there was/perhaps still is a large reward for information leading to the arrest/conviction of the sender of these letters. Now that this man killed himself there are many people coming out stating they thought he was the one. Did these same people contact the FBI earlier? If so, the feds must have investigated and couldn't confirm enough to do much of anything. The whole situation seems highly suspect and almost too easy of a closure.

Shawn rules and does not love truck stop sex with transexuals.

Like the recent 'Madam' found hanged in her mother's garage, this man was suicided too. The things both these people knew would have shaken the Republican government to it's core.

The man was normal until he became paranoid a few years ago. Why? Because he knew exactly what happened and who was responsible. And what would happen to him if he ever got to trial.

The whole anthrax bullshit stinks like another Cheney/Rove False Flag operation.

Murder Inc is now a government office.

Or, not. Will have to get the real story on George Noory, assuming I can patch my tin-foil hat in time.

bullshit..

actually... you know you are right, what I said was wrong. He did not kill himself because he did it... its been seven years since the anthrax attacks, so obviously that didn't matter. He killed himself because the Justice Department found out he did it.

DNA lead to the suspect... interesting article... amazing what they can do in solving crimes now.

I find myself agreeing with Dumpling on this one. If you've got enough information to tell a man he'll be arrested, you've got enough to arrest him.

The smell of games lingers.

What was said last night on the tube? The FBI always gets it's man, after seven years, after first getting the wrong man, after first ruining the life of the first man, after allowing the "true" suspect to die without testimony.

Ruining Hatfill's life? I want Hatfill's life where I'm not arrested, not officially accused of anything but get $5 million for my "troubles"...

Read the DNA article... it sounds like the way they were able to get him was from a relatively new technology. No conspiracy, just a painfully long investigation that pointed right at a nutjob who offed himself before the Government could do it.

Did you read the second page of the article? The guy was a nut bag seeking revenge....

Duley became so worried that she petitioned a local judge for a protective order against Ivins. According to an audio recording of the hearing, she said she had seen Ivins as a therapist for six months, and thought he had tried to kill people in the past.

"As far back as the year 2000, [Ivins] has actually attempted to murder several other people, [including] through poisoning," she said "He is a revenge killer, when he feels that he's been slighted . . . especially towards women. He plots and actually tries to carry out revenge killings," she told a judge.

She described a July 9 group therapy session in which Ivins allegedly talked of mass murder.

"He was extremely agitated, out of control," she said. Ivins told the group he had bought a gun, and proceeded to lay out a "long and detailed homicidal plan," she said.

"Because he was about to be indicted on capital murder charges, he was going to go out in a blaze of glory; that he was going to take everybody out with him," she said.

Rob, Hatfill has been wandering the wilderness for years----The FBI went so far as to call potential employers and tell them not to hire him.

I think years of official oppression puts a kink in anyone's life. A few million is the least he's due. Too bad it won't come out of Bush's pocket.

As for DNA evidence---Really, buddy, how hard do you think it is to get someone's DNA? Or don't you recall recent FBI lab scandals?

But just to remind you---The FBI has a habit of faking physical evidence.

The fact this guy allegedly used pills to snuff himnself is of interest, given he is a male, owned a gun, and by report wanted to go out not with a whimper.

Really, buddy, how hard do you think it is to get someone's DNA?

I think it was the DNA of the Anthrax, not the people... that told them where the DNA came from...

Sometimes the gov't actually gets the bad guy...

It does seem to have been anthrax DNA. I'm still hung up on the logical problems, though---

1) After 9/11, this was the crime of the century. No one can keep the suspect alive?

2) There was no one afraid this fellow had the capacity for a second strike if threatened but not in custody?

3) Always suspects but never a warrant. How strange.

He killed himself because he did it.

I call Bushit!

You have no idea.

Seven years.

Neither did the FBI. They drove him mad. Case Closed? Not even yet friend. Now maybe we will actually find out what happened. I doubt it.

Do you really want to know Rob?

I doubt it.

Its a blue pill or red pill question.

Warrantless wiretapping, sneak and peek, and the patriot act couldn't catch the anthrax mailer alive, in seven years, before he committed suicide?

Jesus. Even if you believe the govts story, it's pretty fucking sad.

Good thing we're giving up our rights. Over 10,000 people in Iraq released from prisons, too?
Our govt couldn't catch a cold.

Suicide?

Well - how convenient!

Obviously a cover-up; part of a conspiracy.

WTC 'attacks' (check)
Pentagon 'attack' (check)
Flight 93 'crash' (check)
Bin Laden 'hunt' (check)
Afghanistan 'invasion' (check)
Iraq 'WMD' (check)
Anthrax 'dispersion' (check)
Ivins 'untimely death' (check)

The check-list is clear - the evidence is mounting...

(your turn - figure it out!)

Be Well.

Neither did the FBI. They drove him mad. Case Closed? Not even yet friend. Now maybe we will actually find out what happened. I doubt it.

Do you really want to know Rob?

Hell yeah I want to know the whole story...

Look if this were another "person of interest" situation and the dude offed himself, yeah I'd have a lot of doubts... but that DNA story, combined with that they were going to charge him with it AS WELL AS seek the death penalty tells me they had a real case here. Then he goes and kills himself, and that's pretty much it for me. I believe this was the guy and like the DNA story, I think over the next days/weeks/months we're going to here more damning evidence.

If I remember right from the original story, he killed himself with a massive overdose of tylenol... Which is actually really easy to do. Large amounts of tylenol is very deadly, and would be quite difficult to stop someone from doing. I don't know why they told him/his lawyer in advance what would happen... but I don't blame them for his suicide. If someone wants to kill himself its gonna happen.

I'm sure it's nothing, but full disclosure is required under oath just to make sure.

Do you have a problem with that, Rob?

I wish to see the evidence against the deceased.

Rob,
He killed himself with an overdose of Tylenol III (the good stuff with codeine) which is far easier.

The case isn't open and shut, but I'm amazed at how many people are coming to this guy's defense once Washington Post publishes an article that casts even the slightest doubt as to his guilt.

The FBI, while they do occasionally perform actions that are at best questionable, are not the shadowy big-brother organization that is seeking to prosecute thought-crimes. For the conspiracy theorists: take a deep breath...now take your meds.

If you want an alternate conspiracy theory, check Glen Greenwald's blog concerning this same story, his take is far more realistic.

This isn't new news. It's been public knowledge since 2002 that the anthrax bacteria strain came from Ft. Detrick in Frederick, Md. I love it how the mainstream media regurgitates old news as a major breakthrough, spin... weeeeee....

From Wikipedia

On May 9, 2002, New Scientist published an article that reported: 'The DNA sequence of the anthrax sent through the US mail in 2001 has been revealed and confirms suspicions that the bacteria originally came from a US military laboratory. The data released uses codenames for the reference strains against which the attack strain was compared. The two reference strains that appear identical to the attack strain most likely originated at the US Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick (USAMRIID), Maryland. The new work also shows that substantial genetic differences can emerge in two samples of an anthrax culture separated for only three years. This means the attacker's anthrax was not separated from its ancestors at USAMRIID for many generations.'

The FBI "Slime Balls" (anyone in the FBI is a sleazy slime-ball!) who are behind the anthrax mailings, picked Mr.Ivins as their expendebale "Patsy" then murdered him and blamed him for the anthrax terrorism! Geez I'd love to see these low-life,scum-bag FBI cocksuckers brought to justice and be there to see them executed!!!!! I'd love every minute of it!!!!!!!

Exactly -- giving Ivins advance notice of the arrest is a big red flag. A prosecutor interviewed on NPR over the weekend pointed out that it's extremely unusual to do this -- you don't want them leaving the country, e.g.

It sounds equally likely that they knew they had only a circumstantial case, knew he was mentally unstable, and were deliberately pushing him to do something they could get him for.

The gov't has a lot of explaining to do, regardless. If he's the sociopath with the history they describe, why was he put in charge of a biological weapons lab?

There were true believers in the Soviet Union and in Nazi Germany that believed that their governments were capable of cover-up, manipulations, intriques and illegal adventures.

Some of those people were still shaking their heads in disbelief as they were led off to the stockade.

Okay, clearly this is wild speculation, but what if they were hoping he would panic and try to get rid of some evidence he had or return to the scene where he put it all together to further clean up what he did... which would give them even more ammunition against him in the trial.

Blow it out your #ss rob.

LOL... so easy to get under your pasty white skin Frenchy...

The news today is that any indictment against this guy was still a long way off, and never assured in any case.

Clearly this is wild speculation, but maybe the idea was to drive someone over the edge and then point a finger.

Let's note once again that the murderous sociopath elected to off no one but himself, and that in the most demure fashion possible.
