The double-decker superjumbo Airbus 380, the largest passenger plane ever manufactured, landed at New York's JFK International Airport in its first commercial flight to the United States.

How many MPG?

"How many MPG?"

With a "range at design load" of 8,200 miles and a max fuel capacity of 82,000 gallons and assuming a 25% or so safety margin, I'd guess about about 8 gallons to 1 mile. Or at $5 a gallon, about $40 a mile. Sounds like a high passenger load factor is needed to make any money on them.

And they're still deplaning the passengers....

It's the aviation equivalent of the arrival of the Queen Mary 2 in New York City.

And neither of them were built in the USA, naturally.

The size and amenities of the A380 are jaw dropping. The first class section has luxury cruise ship features — showers and spas and private suites, furnished with personal mini-bars, wardrobes, and massage system.

The sheiks of the United Arab Emirates thank you for wasting lots of fuel in your idiotic gas guzzling Hummers.

I saw Jodie Foster was on the flight. She was carrying on like a mad woman. Something about her daughter boarding the plane with her and then disappearing mid flight.

Oh, er, that was the movie.

What a shocker.

Among the top 10 finishers of the World Airport Awards in 2008 were five airports in Asia, four in Europe and one in Africa (Cape Town, South Africa). The highest-ranked American airport was San Francisco International Airport, at No. 11.

The top 10 award winners this year were:

Hong Kong International Airport
Singapore Changi International Airport
Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea
Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia
Munich Airport in Germany
Kansai International Airport in Osaka Bay
Copenhagen Airport in Denmark
Zurich Airport in Switzerland
Helsinki Vantaa Airport in Finland
Cape Town International Airport in South Africa

The top-ranked airports are thorough modern, with features like free Wi-Fi and high-speed train service to downtown.

It's also interesting that an American airport doesn't even make the top ten list. Is the U.S. #1 at anything besides consuming?

"Is the U.S. #1 at anything besides consuming?"

Does overpaying for health care count?

Well, Atlanta is still the world's busiest airport, which is infinitely more kick-ass than just being nice. And it is not bad to go pick up someone there most of the time. The Atlanta traffic - that horror is something else, but not the airport's fault.

Is the U.S. #1 at anything besides consuming?

Yes, in claiming to be #1 in everything.

But there #1 places no other country will claim:

- most expensive military (nearly 10 times more than next on the list)
- most people in jail

The story started out touting the merits of this new jumbo jet, but quickly switched gears to bashing JFK. Not that they don't deserve it.
