Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Federal agents may take a traveler's laptop computer or other electronic device to an off-site location for an unspecified period of time without any suspicion of wrongdoing, as part of border search policies the Department of Homeland Security recently disclosed. Also, officials may share copies of the laptop's contents with other agencies and private entities for language translation, data decryption or other reason.

Maybe the RIAA will sue.

"Passwords Please.........."

I can't believe they have let 19 towelheads change us so much.

What a bunch of pansies Americans have become.

Scared of our own shadows. What great fucking leadership.....

MP,

Freedumb isn't free.

The smart move is to FedEx your laptop, camera, iPod, cellphone, and any other storage medium. I know it will be a boring trip home, but you won't have to put up with this bullshit.

With this little policy, and the 'talked about' use of electric shock bracelets that contain your personal data, DHS is killing the airline industry.

I don't fly commercially very much as it is, but if they start the bracelets, I will refuse to fly on the airlines, period.

Yeah I thought we were fighting for FREEDOM(tm)!!!

I'm just confused what is freedom in the context of America today?

Freedom from government spying? Freedom from what sure sounds like illegal search and siesure? Freedom of information about government policies? Freedom of speech? Freedom of religion? (Islam counts as equally as Christianity) Freedom to elect any politician you want as long as they are from just two parties?

Really what freedom is being defended and from whom?

If you've got nothing to hide, then what are you complaining ab(?!!)...

Hey! That's my laptop! What do you mean I'll get it back in two months? You're not going to look at everything are you? I mean, heh heh, those are just some figure poses my..ahhh..wife shot of my niece. Really.

Can you imagine the scene where some Homeland Security-type is demanding your kid fork over his PSP or Gameboy? I'm thinking Harold Pinter does Disney, with Lindsay Lohan as the slutty nanny.

"Democracy is two wolves and 1 lampb voting on what to have for lunch.Freedom, however is the well-armed lamb contesting the results."

I think Ben Franklin said something like that.

Freedom is also the right to choose one's own form of servitude.

What a bunch of pansies Americans have become.

Give that man a cigar for he hath nailed in on the head.

And the irony is that it's the so-called 'small government' republicans that have submitted so easily.

Unless they had an ulterior motive, hmmm......

Me personally I'd rather have only the most minimal security in airports and deal with the incredibly small risk of a hijacking. you know cover 99% of POTENTIAL risks. Becuase while there will be the most incredibly small risk of injury or death there is a 100% risk of loss of freedom and humiliation invovled with flying today. You have no idea how much I'd like to tell some of the arrogant DHS dicks to go fuck themselves at the airport. Sad fucks who are working for a pension rather than doing something challenging or useful.

I doubt many of you have anything to worry about. I am sure most of you never leave your parents basement.

I'd love to hear how our conservative friends here will respond to this. They're all for giving up their rights, except when it personally affects them of course.

Now how bout those laptops?

Commercial (imagine the trumpets and drumrolls): Join your local ACLU unit. The laptop you save may be your own. herm

"Also, officials may share copies of the laptop's contents with other agencies and private entities for language translation, data decryption or other reasons, according to the policies,"

More of Bushco Inc. making your personal information available to private corporations.

They don't even have to suspect you anymore?

They can just take your laptop and give it's contents to whoever it wishes for ANY reason?

What if you're self-employed and your whole business is on that laptop? I guess this is just another way to fuck over the average American as often as he can.

C'mon righty retard,. YOU KNOW IF THIS WAS 'THE DARKY' who made this policy, you'd all be screaming how you're loading your rifle as you type.

There's a way to hide files on a PC. Here's a list of programs that will do just that. techrepublic But the fact is you can do this without a program if you understand NTFS.

You can also store your files on a removable drive like a CF card and stick it in your camera, or by using online storage. Adrive offers 50 gig of space for free, but Box.net seems to have a better system for sharing files though the free space is limited to only one gig.

To secure those files you can use 7-zip which has AES 256 bit encryption when saved in the zip format.

Personally I think these guys are just looking for the low hanging fruit. So far the major Al Qaeda types all seem to have college degrees and a level of sophistication that that will avoid this sort of detection. At least as a group there would be someone who knows all of the above tricks of the computer trade.

"You can also store your files on a removable drive like a CF card and stick it in your camera..."

If they can seize your iPod, I bet they could take your camera, too. Not to mention any napkins in your pocket.

Ozark,

It is very easy to pull hidden files off laptops and anything else if you have the knowledge and software to look for them. The only thing that works is key encryption which the government doesn't have a backdoor to.

The other alternative is to keep it all on a pen drive and stick it up your ass and hope you don't get the "Puppet Master" treatment from DHS.

Well, well, we get what we sew.

As the nation loses more and more of its freedoms it will take longer and longer to actually become free.

The young of this nation stand around like idiots, not a care in the world and never realizing what they lost.

Focussing on who did this (neocon righties) doesn't change the fact that the DEMOCRATIC PARTY is in bed and supporting the moves.

Naturally they don't disclose the nature of this 'threat' that they so need to rape Americans' privacy for.

DHS is just a bunch of damned Stasi, protecting the fatherland from people with... INFORMATION.

It certainly argues to only carry a cheap $300 laptop for the worthless retards to seize.

What would definitely be fun is include lots of sinister sounding file names on the computer - full of nothing but random gibberish and then tagged with well-known encryption extensions. Let them spend tens of thousands trying to figure that out. Maybe hundreds of thousands if they launch a full-scale investigation. It only cost YOU $300.

Keep in mind that the only reason they do this is to plant evidence. So if you protest too much they will plant some kiddie porn from the RNC's prized collection and arrest you.
There is no way to prove they have not tampered with your system.

A nice system in that allows you to provide a password that boots the system into decoy operating system.

Actually dumb seems to be all that is free.

wait to you hear what really happened to this guy!

www.willitsnews.com

another version of the story.

I heard this guy Robo on the radio today. His side of the story sounds completely different.

And besides. They evacuated a plane based on stickers.

I really don't feel like flying anymore.

The magic has gone out of it completely for me. They make you leave anything that you could use to defend yourself at home. You can't even take water. The whole thing about searching you is some kind of joke as they can still sneak bomb crap through all the time.

Its all bullshit.

I am so sick of it.

Here is a question I bet no one can answer.

How much money do we spend on Top Secret Clearances in this country? Millions? Billions? Doesn't that mean we now Trust these folks? Yet, every single one of those folks with clearances still has to wait in the line to be searched?

How do you explain that?

How come we have a Terror Watch List but no Approved Americans List?

And once you are on the Terrorist Watch List it is almost impossible to get off it.

just ask Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu

I can't believe they have let 19 towelheads change us so much.

They cannot be called towel heads anymore because they don't wear towels. They wear cut up sheets and must be called sheet heads.

You got that?

I can't believe they have let 19 towelheads change us so much.

Excellent point.

I can't believe WE (as in the people of the US) have let 19, NINETEEN "terrorists" change our whole view on the world (well along with the constant fearmongering ala the consored media).

Well Tell us all Mr Genius, Sniper;

When the ACLU goes to court to knock out this direct and disgusting abuse of the 4th amendment , in essence restoring your GUARANTEED CONSTITUTIONAL FREEDOM from unreasonable search and seizure...

What tune will you be whistling then? Dixie?

Freedom is Free. Only Morons pay for it.

A 1 gig micro sd card is very easy to conceal, I've carried 2 gig sd cards thru and also thumb drives with no hassle.

You travel with a throwaway laptop, expect that it will be confiscated, but you don't have to keep data on it.

I still say "Dept. of Homeland Security" sounds way too much like a name the Nazis would have come up with. And these clowns haven't let me down yet--

ANyone who thinks Obama will stop this is laughably lost in "Ignorland"

thanks for noticing! first brought to you by Donnerboy!

The concept of concealing memory cards or any other device, to preserve your privacy by committing a crime, strikes directly at the core of the issue.

You would become a criminal to protect your privacy???? Founding Fathers are rolling in their graves.

Thus the facist-Police State Dictatorship wins.

Something to be proud of, but only if you're a Republican who "doesn't have anything to hide..."

If Thomas Paine were alive today he'd be shouting: "Time for revolution my friends, and I don't mean dusting off your ol' copies of a Beatles 45."

I've always wondered one thing: If I was in line at an airport and was flagged to be searched for some stupid reason...and I was taken into a back room for that search, but refused to submit...

Then what? Am I allowed to leave the building without the search and just not fly that day?

Anyone know?

Dump and Donner (sounds like like a law firm) raise excellent issues and I can't answer. I also quit flying commercially after some indignities at LAX. What if you refuse to be searched? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the Guantanamo wind. herm

"The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the Guantanamo wind"

so it is...
