The ACLU has it wrong. The Optional Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict requires that children are not recruited COMPULSORILY. This game does not FORCE the childern to join the army.

America's Army is a good game. It's a fair replacement for the Battlefield series, which has become clunky and unwieldy in play. It's about as much a recruitment tool as any ol' movie. The game doesn't hook you in and then require you to join the army to keep playing.. it just brings you through a very abbreviated boot camp (as have MANY other games.. it's a great place to put a tutorial) and has a link to a real army recruiter page.

So? The kinds of kids who will be recruited by this are the same kinds of kids who would become a Wiccan after playing Witcher. It's not the fault of the media involved that people can't seem to keep from allowing fiction to define their fact.

I'm in the midst of trying to editorialize an idea about how a warrior culture may not actually be such a bad thing. I mean, there are values (integrity, honor, sacrifice) that come with being a soldier, that we are losing in many other places in society, e.g., "no-loss" soccer leagues. Spina Bifida and downs syndrome are medical conditions that are NOT a death sentence in their own right. Additional DNA testting? I support it 100%. Every prisoner should be given maximum opportunity to defend themselves. This includes monitoring emrging technologies...like DNA (well not truly emerging, but RECENT is likely a better word).

As far as helping McCain win women voters? I don;t think it would. But then I have never understood the "it's my body" argument. No, it isn;t. It is your body that you have given space to another PERSON. You don;t get to make decisions over your body that would affect another persons life.

Check subsection B of part 3 of Article three of the act. Pay close attention here:

" (b) Such recruitment is carried out with the informed consent of the person's parents or legal guardians;"

that means that no child can legally be allowed to play America's Army while the "Click here to man up all macho superstud and have a recruiter contact you, you awesome guy!" button exists inside the game unless the parents give explicit, not implicit, permission. Essentially, there would have to be a permission slip signed by the parents of every minor playing that game or the Army could not legally let them play it. (or they can remove all "real" recruitment from the game)

I don't see the harm in what the Army is doing either.. but legally they are in the wrong.

The game is evil because it may encourage some kid somewhere to join the military and defend our country and our freedoms when he/she becomes an adult?
