First--Savage loathes Bush, Rice and Rummy--very critical of politicians in general--doesn't like Obama either--but he is in the same company as the others.

I know this is hard to believe--but Savage remarks are incomplete and taken out of context.

He started the show talking about doctors now prescribing Chloresteral medicine--given to adults--that are given to children at the age of 5 and 6.

There are no studies on the effects of the livers and other organs when giving this medicine to kids.

He then went into autism. AND he was very careful to include that his remarks DID NOT INCLUDE kids who are truly autistic.

He claims that 1 out of 150 kids are diagnosed with autism--and this is true--per the protesters in the video even.

How is it that this many kids are getting this diagnosis at the age of 18 months? He stated that some kids are slower talkers, quieter, shy. Some are allowed to behave badly.

HOw is it that if there is this epidemic of autism--and with 1 out of 150 getting this diagnosis--this is an epidemic--what is going on?

Some blame the vaccines--but why are the other Western countries not getting the same number of diagnosis with the same child vaccines?

He pointed to the minority chidren a few years ago that were epidemic for Asthma. All of these kids getting this diagnosis. Many were found to not have the affliction. But the quack doctors and parents were in it to get welfare.

Savage claims that some (not the ones that are truly autistic mind you), are getting quack doctors and quack diagnosis.

The reason (claimed by Savage) is that there are programs that some (not the ones who actually have the problems assiciated with autism) are going for the diagnosis because there are programs that give money, programs (speech, schooling) and welfare to those kids.

Basically he is not talking about the children who actually have the affliction--but there is a problem in this country where the drug companies are running the health of people for nothing else but to gain profit.

I know what he is talking about 'illness du jour'. When I was growing up, it was asthma (as he said). Then everyone had to have their tonsils out. When my son was a baby, putting tubes in their eardrums was vogue. Then it was ADD and ADHD.

They don't routinely take tonsils out anymore. they don't routinely put tubes in kids' ears anymore. ADHD and ADD diagnoses have fallen off from 20 years ago.

I don't know what the current illness is, but I'll probably soon find out now that I have a grandchild. Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll require surgery and/or pills to correct.

Murphy- Psychiatrists didn't even really start attempting to diagnose child mental disorders until the early 1980's. So it's easy to see how the numbers of diagnosis' could go up so quickly.

I know a couple of kids who were diagnosed as autistic who did terrible in school even with counseling and whatnot. In both cases they lived with their moms at the time but when the moms moved out-of-state they went to live with their dads. Miracle of miracles within a few months the diagnosis was dropped. I'm not saying dads are better for such kids, I'm saying a parent who doesn't baby them is.

I'm sure there are legitimately autistic kids but not nowhere near the numbers stated.

Autism is a complex disorder. A comprehensive evaluation requires a multidisciplinary team including a psychologist, neurologist, psychiatrist, speech therapist, and other professionals who diagnose children with ASDs.

This hardly sounds like fad diagnosis'. This takes time to do properly.

Unlike ADD, which a dr. can just say you have it in ten minutes and prescribe ritalin.

ANY doctor that makes a neurological assessment that is not rigorous is a bad one. But they do not reflect the majority of MD's in the field.

I've heard him several times in the evening though it's been many months. A local FM station carries him.

I don't care for him. In part because of the specific words he uses, but (for me anyway) it's his angry and highly combative style. Righteous indignation I can only take in small doses.

Maybe another way to describe it is when I hear talking heads James Carville and Lanny Davis. Carville comes across as mean and nasty (like Savage) where Davis takes a different approach to convey his analysis/talking points. Both are libs, but their styles/approaches are vastly different.

Same deal with the difference between Rush & Savage. It's day and night in terms their style of analysis, use of humor, the rhetoric, etc. To lump those two together as peas in a pod is, to me, unfair - other than the reality they'd both call themselves conservatives.

He is also the most intelligent talk show host on the radio with a huge command of the english language, a supurb understanding of history and a vast knowlege of important literature.

As the grandfather of an autistic 12 year old boy, I can attest to the fact that Savage's statement is smack-dab spot on. His parents allow ANY type of behavior with the excuse, "He's special." For instance, he shits his pants EVERY day because he doesn't want to leave his video games and they just wash him up and put on clean underwear. It's easier to do that than train him, I guess. He stayed with us for a week this month and didn't do it once because he had been told if he does, the video game goes away for the day. We had to do that once or twice in the past so he believes us now.
True, it's an ordeal to train him until he realizes he won't win. His parents don't want the grief so they just let him run wild. I suspect many parents do that and that's why they have a "brat."

I see children with different levels of autism who ARE brats for the reasons I mentioned.

In the article, he goes on to say that many of the brats aren't actually autistic which is also true.

He amazes me in many ways. He can read and pronounce any word...I mean, ANY word...but he doesn't know what he's reading. He can accurately quote the lines of all the actors in any Indiana Jones or Star Wars movie. He could do many more things if his parents would just work with him instead of baby sit him with video games. He has a memory like an elephant. If you tell him something, he'll repeat it to you years later. All he needs is a little persistence and a little discipline. He's a different kid away from his parents.

Sounds like you did a great job raising yer own "brats".

Ours is the most over-diagnosed and over-medicated country in the history of the world. It's a little amazing to me how many personality defects are actually now considered medical deficiencies. Alcoholism, overeating, drug abuse, generally being just a dick--there's now a fancy name for it, and a legion of medical and psychotherapeutic practitioners reaching into your wallet.

I'm of the opinion that most (not 99%, mind you, but most) of those so prescribed haven't been done a favor. The advice used to be to kick the booze habit, quit smoking, act properly, quit eating so much--now there's an entire establishment set up to tell you none of those things are your fault. Take one of these $14 pills every day, get plenty of therapy at $50 an hour--and you'll be able to "manage" your condition. (I quote from memory, from the diagnosis of my ADD/OCD/bipolar ex-wife who--funny enough--also drank way too much. Wasn't her fault, though. Of course.)

I have 3 friends with autistic children, I admire the courage of those parents, their everyday lives are difficult. None of these kids are taking medications, is this a right wing talking point?. Or maybe no right winger has autistic children, it's a liberal afliction.
