Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

In Sydney today, Pope Benedict for the first time apologized directly for sexual abuse of minors by Catholic clergy, calling it "evil" and saying that "I am deeply sorry for the pain and suffering the victims have endured and I assure them that as their pastor I too share in their suffering."

Although like clockwork a bunch of people are going to whine that this way too little way too late, the fact remains that this Pope has from the very beginning acknowledged the sex abuses which occurred and encouraged dioceses throughout the world to do what is within their power to rectify the situation. That includes financial settlements with victims. This is one of the few areas where Benedict has made a positive impact.

Did he preemptively apologize for all future abuse? That would've shown some foresight.

The Pope apologizes for sex... blames God.

Translation: the pope is sorry for what the scandal cost the church financially. Too late Benny. You can always sell your art collection.

I disagree with you Ray. I am inclined to believe the Pope is sincere in the apology. The scandal broke under John Paul II and he never went a tenth as far as Benedict in acknowledging and trying to make amends.

True the scandal broke under JP. Still, they are all sincere after they are caught. The Vatican is having some serious money problems.

"I too share in their suffering. Don't you just love this red outfit?"

Short of disbanding the RC Church, there is nothing Benedict could do in the aftermath of the child molestations which would make some of you content. It is a ridiculous threshold.

It is a ridiculous threshold.

Not really. How about admitting sex is "natural" and not some kind of weird sin.

How about admitting that celibacy is a mistake. Explain to us why Priests have to be celibate again and why woman can't be Priests? And what is the deal with the Holy Hangups with same sex relationships.

Priests... Heal your own "Souls" before you think you can heal the "Souls" of others.

How about dealing with human sexuality as part of our natural Spirituality instead of trying to ignore it and then make everyone feel guilty about that.

Is that really too much to ask?

I guess so...

Yo do know that Benedict was instrumental in getting kid-diddling priests moved out of one diocese and into another, as if that would somehow stop the abuse.

He was a key player in the cover up!

Did he preemptively apologize for all future abuse? That would've shown some foresight.

Better he show foresight than foreskin.

There is a small part of this sex problem in RCC.

In the country's that are very strongly RC we hear little or nothing of abuses. I have heard from some friends that the church teaches to say nothing against the "Holy men of God" as this would be a serious sin. So the church has much of the world under their influence shut up nicely. Or does anyone believe that it only happens in English speaking countries?

I like Pope Benedict. Wasn't sure how I'd feel about him in the beginning but he seems to be trying to bring back the old-style Catholic Church and get rid of all the liberal crap. He's saying masses in Latin again too. I like to hear the Mass in Latin better. Around the 1970's or so the Church got too free spirited and lost its way -- you have to shake hands with everyone during the Mass, they played guitars and beat on drums -- really kinda weird.

Pope Bennie will bring it back. Not that I go to church on Sundays anymore, though. I'll probably get struck by lightening for it too, one of these days.

Wow!

Had the same pedophile problem in australia so now I wonder where they sent the abusers now......africa, no condoms required.

What a poor excuse, and just think, people here after all this still support and follow the organization and allow the church evaluate their life styles yet. I wonder if God will have it in his heart to forgive those who follow the worst sin organization in such faith.

"Jesus had harsh words for anyone who would cause a child to stumble, But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.--

Pope Apologizes for Church Sex Abuse?

No problem, Ben. That's okay. Don't worry about it. herm

Do you honestly not know what the Catholic Church has against same sex marriages? It is entirely two separate issues concerning allowing gays to be either members of a church and the permitting of same sex marriages.

Whether you have any belief in Christianity, read the biblical prohibitions on the subject. It is quite plain.

I find the government allowing same sex marriages to be wrong. First off, gays stay together far less time than conventional couples. The divorce court will be swamped. While there is by law a separation of church and state, marriage is a church based institution. So have the so called Unions performed by Judges and all but the clergy. Why must the gay community have a type of union going back God only know how many years.

I don't have any problem with gay people but I do not think that the institution of marriage is indicated for them.

After spending his early days covering up and enabling Priestly Sexual Child Predators he has emerged as "The Infallible Pope". History needsto be rewritten, starting with this formal apology. Better than continuing the cover-up I suppose.

If all of the crazy excesses of the RCC were to be expose from the earliest times known to present, this would not involve just one book. It would take a book of CD's to cover any kind of depth. To truly cover the sexual abuses of the clergy would take much time and require the church to stop blocking all efforts to make such a determination. With the public persona, priests on up to the top are in a total about face lie.

"We pledge all possible cooperation with law enforcement and all concerned". This was put out by the Cardinal for Los Angeles and pretty near every other RCC area. At the same time this claim is made they are transferring anyone involved repeatedly and losing the records of even where the problem people are.

The one thing this entire mess could be titled for them is "The Big Lie" From the Poopy down to the janitor. They have no right to claim to speak for Christians anywhere, not lying about things in this way. While I am not a Roman Catholic I will do what needs be done.

I, on my own, and acting on my own beliefs. Do hereby excommunicate the members of that RCC that are involve in such a total opposite of gods work.
You are quick to do this to those that believe differently than you and now it is you violating the trust you claim Crist put on you. Please pack quietly and return to the life of a none religious figure. You are no longer representative of The Church Of Jesus Christ's Father, our true God. Leave quietly and leave all of those enormously valuable art treasures. They will be sold and those in need cared for.
