Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

After Joshua Lipton, 20, was charged in a drunken driving crash that seriously injured a woman, the college junior attended a Halloween party dressed as a prisoner. When party photos of his costume were posted on Facebook, they were used by the prosecutor in the case.

Don't drink and drive and especially don't drink and drive and later post drunken photos of yourself on Facebook or MySpace. Duh!

I curious as to how the prosecutors are able to find these kids in Facebook under their real names. Don't they usually post in Facebook under anonymous names and/or user handles like bloggers do? Who would put down their first and last real names on some internet web site like Facebook.

CAL-
You make an interesting point. When signing up for MySpace, you are prompted for your personal info... which doesn't appear to the visitor unless you choose to make your name your "handle" like LarryMohr has done. My "handle" is Randy, which is my name. But if you searched all of MySpace for "Randy" you'd find tons of entries. But if you searched my first + last name it would come up plainly.

Here's my MySpace page:
profile.myspace.com

I've been able to locate several people from high school and college by searching by their real name and/or their school.

So it can be done.

Nice Yellowstone Pics, Oohrah.
My second home.

That's a nice MySpace website you have. I see your boys are on there too.

As for this part of your post:

When signing up for MySpace, you are prompted for your personal info... which doesn't appear to the visitor unless you choose to make your name your "handle" like LarryMohr has done.

What do you want to bet that a lot of prosecutors going after younger adults for a DUI might just automatically submit a "Supoena for Request of Records" with the person's to the main offices of Facebook and MySpace to see if they hit paydirt. I don't know much about those websites but I imagine most kids have some webpage for themselves.

I also read last week a story about how this generation's crop of future politicians are going to have to deal with photos of their younger partying days popping up permanently on the internet. The article I read last week also said [paraphrasing as follows] "We've all just heard stories of Bush's drinking and Obama smoking weed but only on hearsay. If we saw actual Facebook pictures of them we might have a much more negative attitude towards them." It then went on to say how kids today, if they expect to run for office, etc., should be careful of what photos are allowed to go on the internet as it really could come back to haunt them later on in life.

All I can say is "Thank God" this wasn't around in some of my more rowdy partying days. :)

"with the person's to the main office..."

should be

"...with the person's name to the main office...."

Yellowstone is much larger than I'd initially anticipated. Do you live close by? We stayed at Big Sky, MT. Also drove to Jackson, WY, for a day or two. My father-in-law really wanted to go there and we wanted to see the Grand Tetons. So it worked out nicely.

CAL-
We have the ability to delete photos. If someone had bookmarked the site, if the photo had been removed, all the investigator could hope for would be if someone had captured a screen shot of an outdated web page.

I think Obama's change on the success of the surge is a recent case in point of reviving an outdated web page via a screen shot.

I've seen some "interesting" photos of my sons' friends. Many have made their page "private" - which means you have to request permission from the person to be their friend and to view their page.

I've had a number of spam inquiries from porn sites and have also had several requests from women who view my photos and want to converse with me. So I've gotten to converse with a number of women who I otherwise wouldn't know of. Nothing overtly sexual, though in one case it started that way till I put a quick stop to it.

If I had young daughters I'd be pretty concerned that they keep their site private and that they only converse with known friends.

oohrah try not allowing it at all.

My daughter is not allowed to have a facebook or myspace account or youtube or any other without us knowing about it. The computer in her room is not hooked up to the internet at all so the only access she gets is the computers in the living room so we can watch whats going on.

Being a dad of a 12 going on 18 year old is stressful enough, the internet has sure not helped with that. Then tack on "role models" like Miley Cyrus and Jamie Lyn Spears and I'm ready to pull my hair out.

TAO-
I can understand your concerns and if I had daughters I might go that route. Maybe it's different with boys, especially boys like ours who aren't emotionally/mentally unstable. They're pretty grounded in reality and weren't starved for friendship or attention - and thus as subject to predators online. Of course, parents are always tha last to know...

...So I've gotten to converse with a number of women who I otherwise wouldn't know of. Nothing overtly sexual, though in one case it started that way till I put a quick stop to it.

My, lucky for you Mrs. Oohrah seems to be a very understanding woman.
With my Irish temper, if I caught you emailing other women you'd get a smack
upside your head with a 10" skillet. (grin)

Chris-

One of the reasons people use facebook is to connect with old friends. People register their account under their real name so they can be found by old friends who are searching for them. You'd never be found if you used a fake name. The downside is putting something stupid up and having it found by the wrong people.

Lived in the park for 6 years... Yellowstone lake in summer and OF in winter.... very fun in winter... most people ski to and from work... cross country. 2.2 million acres of near unadulterated perfection. Bigger than CT and RI combined. Loved every too short minute of it.
