Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Every presidential candidacy relies on a myth. Reagan was a great communicator; Clinton felt your pain. Both storylines were ridiculous. But rarely are the constructs used to market a party nominee as transparent or as fictional as those were being asked to swallow in 2008.

Still more laughable than the notion of Obama as the second coming of JFK is the founding myth of the McCain campaign: (a) he is a war hero, and (b) said heroism increases his credibility on national security issues.

Well, I dont think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president,--

Truer words have never been spoken.

Unless of course you have the belief that EVERY SINGLE veteran that served is more qualified to be president than anyone else.

Once more, a disclaimer. I'll be voting Democratic straight-ticket in November.

No, merely being a vet doesn't make you more qualified for president. The real issue is "dues-paying". experience of life.

Like it or not, this is McCain's advantage over Obama, just as it was his advantage over Bush.

I fail to see how an accident-prone Lieutenant forty years ago translates into vast military experience.

Peter Principle in effect.

This is merely a variety of swift-boating. And a poor and dangerous attempt. If the election is about "life", McCain wins over Obama. Describing someone as "accident-prone" won't change that.

Focus in on the issues. We've enough of those to win.

Part of that "life" would be the Keating Five.

Or are you saying nothing from the past counts?

I'd say Keating is an issue. I'd say trying to turn McCain's honorable service to his country into a liability is what the Republicans did to Kerry.

McCain's honorable service

I'm not arguing that point.

However, McCain-as-war-hero doesn't work either, He's still a Lieutenant who was shot down.

Just being in war is doing one's duty, but I reserve "heroism" for something else entirely.

Ted,

Being captured by the enemy does not make someone a hero.

Throwing yourself on a grenade to save a platoon, charging a machine gun nest, leading an assault on an enemy position.

Did McBullshit do any of those?

What the hell is so heroic about crashing five planes and getting captured by the enemy.

Well, it's heroic to climb back into a military aircraft flying into war zones, having survived previous crashes. And it's heroic to deny yourself an early release from a POW camp simply because you're daddy got promoted, and the enemy wanted to use you for propoganda purposes.

Fair enough though. Some of you libs are itching for payback over Kerry's Swiftboating, and don't see how you're as guilty as they are. Soldier on, if you'll excuse the phrase.

McCain's advantage over Obama, just as it was his advantage over Bush.

Uhm, not really, considering the outcome of his race against Bush.
