I think Slim's plan was to straddle an H bomb and ride it over the Soviet Union.

I remember riding a Boogie Board on a 13' foot wave once. Took me an hour to finally get beyond the break and catch a wave. When I got up on top I was looking about 15-16' down the front of the wave.
Slim in the final scene of Dr. Strangelove is who I thought of as I let out a whoop or two.
The rest was a scary few moments of thinking I'd never breath or see the surface again. Kind of like being in a sand filled washing machine.
Fun ride.

love t-boone. he cannot be all wrong. he sees the next wave and it's in the making. he's due to put a whoopin' wind farm in texas and hopefully he'll do well.
a.u. - i remember doing something like that while bodysurfing as a youngster during riptide in san diego. lived to tell the tale.

15' is a long way to fall let alone have tons of water crush the air out of one's lungs while you try to not swallow sand and water... tumbling and tumbling..tumbling and tumbling....
What a freakin' rush.
Ah, the glory of youth. I'd probably still try it though.
Gnarly dude! LOL

My Navy buddies and I used to body surf at Nanakuli beach and also the N Shore on Oahu when I was stationed at Pearl Harbor. I know exactly what you mean being on the edge of a 'cliff' of water looking straight down at wet sand and no water.
It was so cool. I'm lucky I never broke my neck.

GOAT
I only did that once on that big of a wave. No need tempting fate.
Every time I was in Hawaii it was January-ish with typhoons in the South Pacific. They had the beaches closed with 20-25' sheer walls of water.
I wouldn't have tried for $10,000. Sure death on a Boogie Board. Beautiful scene though watching perfect glossy walls of water as high as a 2 or 3 story house.

My first experience with those monster waves was viewing them only. My friends and I drove to the N shore to see what we heard on the news were 40' waves.
I was in 50' seas in the Sea of Japan once in 1975. That's where I got my thumb so fucked up and had to be flown by helicopter to the USS Kitty Hawk to get it repaired. My ship took a max 52 degree roll. At 53, parts of the superstructure were supposed to go off.
I am convinced that Mother nature is most awesome at sea.

Did you happen to catch the documentary on TV about the guys surfing those monster waves in Hawaii a couple of years ago? 60'+ waves. The surfers got towed out on jet skis, and then the skis pulled them towards shore to match the sheer speed of the waves. Impossible to get out there or catch a wave otherwise. It was amazing to watch.
One guy got a 65 or 70 footer, maybe even bigger.

I forgot you don't watch TV. I don't a whole lot, but what I watch is good stuff I can learn something from or laugh my ass off.
You can probably find some online video. They call that area "Jaws". I'm not sure if that's where those monsters were I saw on TV or not, but they have some huge ones there. Something abou the way the bay drops off makes huge break huge, especially when there's a storm at sea.
Pretty amazing when the waves get higher than the chopper filming surfers.

You were stationed at Pearl? I used to go with (actually had been engaged to at the time) a Marine stationed up at Pearl when I lived and worked in Waikiki. He took me to see the USS Enterprise when it was in port. I took the Navy tour around Ford Island (part of their USS Arizona tour but didn't include going on to the Arizona itself). I went all over Oahu but never did go to any of the other islands. So much fun with new people to meet all the time as so many guys would pick Oahu for their R&R. Some nice memories you brought back.

CChris, re your 0122 of this morning:
Thank you! I couldn't remember for the life of me the name of that damn park!
1985-1989, Dad was stationed at Camp Smith (administrative end of Pearl). I have to be completely honest with you, my time out there... kinda sucked, honestly. Aside from the times up in Haleiwa (Haleiva? Been too damn long, can't remember the spelling), and the Bay up there. And the hops to the Big and to Maui. Friend of mine and I actually had a bike trip planned around Oahu (camping gear on backs and all, never got to take that trip unfortunately).
Hey Chris, you ever jump of the Rock up there in the Bay?
#23 | Posted by LetUsReason at 2008-07-16 11:26 AM | Reply | Flag: Flag: (Choose)FunnyNewsworthyOffensiveAbusive
I have! Are you talking about the one in Waimaia bay near Haleiwa? The one next to the falls?
What a rush!

Klif -- It's a great idea! In fact a Western-World Plus China "Marshall Plan" to kick the oil habit would jump start all of the major economies.
(Pickens, however isn't a charitable guy. He probably has a couple of $Bil riding on shorting the price of oil.)

Lots of beach and surf growing up.
We used to jump off The Clam in La Jolla.
They closed it off some years back. Sure some folks are still jumping.

Wow. Now that jump is impressive -- and scary! Makes the jump shown in my picture look like a hop into a kiddie swimming pool.
errr, how many beers did it take? (grin)

Thanks for the video clip. Unreal is right. I thought the guy was going to totally wipe out at one point when the front of the curl completely covered him over but then he emerges again. Really something to see. I wonder how far out to sea he was when he caught that wave? His board didn't look real long either. Uncanny surfing.

Sorry it took me so long to get back in this.
CChris, re your 1226 yesterdays:
Yep, that's the one I was talking about.
The one that Goatman linked to at 1344 yesterday I actually don't recognize, unless that's inside the Waimea Bay Park where they had the diving demonstrations (where non-performers were told to go at it but to stick to the six or seven foot drops and to go feet first for pete's sake because the chance of crashing your cranium into a rock formation underwater was way too high)? Like I say, it's been 20 years, so I don't remember much about the park interior.

This thread ought to be retitld "Surf's Up!"
Murph, take a look at the la jolla Clam video again. Count off the seconds for the body to leave the ground then slip into the surf -- eben in slow-mo, it's less than 4 seconds. A fall from 100 feet probably is completed in just about 2 seconds, so perhaps the vid is genuine, but at 100 feet the falling object has speed of 128 fps or roughly about 60MPH. At that speed, anything hitting the water will react as if they were hit by a bus.
Are you sure the vid wasn't photoshopped?

That's interesting. Non-performers ould only do a 6-7 foot dive? Guess it would make sense as there often are hidden rocks just below the surface around a lot of waterfalls. Still, even I would jump off a 6-7' cliff into the water but only if feet first. But no higher than that. Like I said, I'm a wuss. :)
If you haven't done so already, be sure and see the link ("Jaws") posted yesterday by Steamingpile -- geeze, that's the most gross-sounding username (grin). Anyway, you can find his link by going back to this post:

Chris, more a statement of where your head is than mine. Think mashed potatoes or compost.
Anyway, I watch that Jaws clip every couple of months or so, and I'm awed every time.
