In the inbreeding capitol of America (name with held to protect the guilty) this would simply cut down the racket from that/those other heads.This mans mistake was in not considering bleeding to death from the other neck. It just comes down to poor planning.

There was a hiker who had to cut off his own leg when he got his foot caught while hiking in a narrow (5 ft) canyon in the middle of the Mojave Desert a couple of years ago - with a pocket knife.....slowly.

Saw him on ABC a few months ago.

Now that takes guts. But, it was a life or death situation.

The Aztecs or Mayans or some other pre-Columbian SOB's had a ritual kinda like this. They would have some kinda game or military contest then afterward the winners had the opportunity to dance themselves into a religious ecstasy/frenzy while waving a very heavy and sharp machete-like sword. The whole thing culminated in the warrior chopping off his own head. I think they probably lost a bunch of their best guys this way.

........the guy was a retired captain or major from the English military.......

......I don't think I could find it at this point, but it was news at the time......
