America is at the brink of revolution, but it's hard for us to see because we are living in it. You can easily read of revolution, from the Protestant Reformation, to the Renaissance, to the Civil Rights Movement, but when you are in that time and place, things just seem to be in turmoil. but WE are in a revolution.

For the first time in history of the world, we have control over our fate. America's fate is intertwined with everyone else. I believe submissiveness is just as dangerous as warmongering. At least acting submissive gets you in the door and allows you to work under the visage of guile and good intent. Yet, too much exertion of power and never bending some to global pressure makes you seem ignorant and not a team-player. You have to at least act like you care. Davis, a member of the black leadership network Project 21 and a writer and radio talk show host in Huntsville, Ala., commented that, "History tends to unilaterally and falsely depict Republicans as racists when Southern Democrats truly deserved this title." In defense of his argument he cites the voting record of Democrats and Republicans on the 1964 Civil Rights Act. On this monumental piece of legislation, Republicans supported the bill 27-6 in the Senate (82%) and 138-34 in the House (80%) while Democrats supported the bill 46-21 in the Senate (69%) and 152-96 in the House (61%). On the surface it would indeed appear that the Republicans, and not the Democrats as commonly assumed, were the champions of civil rights in the 1960s.

However, a slightly more careful analysis of the Civil Rights Act voting record shows a distinct split between Northern and Southern politicians. Among the southern states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia), Senate Democrats voted 1-21 against the bill (5%) while Republicans voted 0-1 (0%). The man had only been dead for mere hours and a thread is thrown up not to put out the news of his passing for general discussion but the introduction to this thread made sure it would be nothing but a hate fest. If a few negative comments were made about Helms on some posts within the thread I could understand it, but this shows total lack of respect.

Helms was 86 years old and from the Deep South. Yes, Helms had his old racist views but he wasn't Hitler and didn't kill anyone although you'd never know it from reading the posts on here. To put up a thread for the sole purpose of tearing apart a man who just died today is rather despicable.

Helms did serve our country for years, whether or not you liked his politics. Since this thread was not put up by an American, I'd like to remind some that in the U.S., if we don't like the deceased, we at least show some class by just keeping silent about him on the day of his death and don't rip him apart only hours after he dies.

And for what it's worth, if memory serves, Boaz never has been reluctant to criticize foreigners on this site, - especially those of the Muslim persuasion. Boaz should practice what he preaches. That would be true "respect", - not just the right wing empty version of it.

As for Helms doing good for NC, well, the same could be said for George Wallace, how do you think he kept getting elected? Alabama had the best roads ever during his administration. Business people were happy. Government workers were happy. Everybody was happy - except certain people.
