All these groups of people that get all huffed up over keeping their language alive crack me up.

People learn to speak the languages that will earn them the most money. If the French and Italians spent as much time working as they did trying to preserve their languages, their languages would probably be more popular.

Well, I have to say that I wish them good luck. With other languages growing in importance, it's not surprising that people are chosing not to learn Italian.

People are saying that Latin is making a comeback so even if they do away with AP Italian now, you never now when it might be in style again.

From the article:

Leaders of the College Board decided in late March to eliminate four of the program's 37 courses, including AP Italian, saying the four were under-enrolled and losing money. The last tests for French literature, Latin literature and computer science are scheduled for May.

I have to say, I'm can't get too worked up about the languages being dropped.

But Computer Science?

Yeah, there's no future in that, this whole internet thing is probably a fad.

Oh well... More jobs that we can outsource to other countries.

when I told my family that I was taking spanish in high school instead of italian because I thought it would be more useful, they thought I was some kind of gavone (sp?)

guess I wasn't the only one.

Yes. I'm an Irish-Italian-Spanish with a dash of Portuguese and English American.

And I have Italian and Spanish ancestry. But since my parents came from a Latin American country in the United States I fall under the catch-all category "Hispanic" or "Latino" even though I am white. You may have noticed in government forms the category white non-hispanic. It's ridiculuous the way the govt and other institution categorizes and groups people.

If someone is a white South African immigrant is he white or African American? What about Egyptions, are they African Americans too? Or would they be Muslims?

This is so fucking confusing.

Actually, we aren't even close to #1. The American perception of what is "racist" is among the broadest in the world. If you label every behavior as "racist" then of course we are all racists. In other countries people are just not as self conscious about it. They aren't less racist. Talk to a person from western Europe for a while and your PC American mind will find all sorts of "prejudice" in their remarks. They haven't been trained to police every little word like we have.

Parts of the US are among the most ethnically/racially diverse places on Earth and large scale racial incidents are very rare.

I don't care what hyphenated American you are. So long as you ain't no Anti-American.

About the only way I know of to revive interest in the Italian language is to show "The Godfather" in the public schools, which the Italian Americans wouldn't want either.

Sorry guys. And with Italy having among the lowest birthrates in the world, the Italians themselves are determined not to have their language survive another few generations.

Yes, I am sure that Italian Fascism was more romantic than other Fascims around the world.
