Florida carried out its first execution since a botched lethal injection in 2006 prompted a moratorium. Mark Dean Schwab was put to death by lethal injection at 6:15 p.m. for kidnapping, raping and killing 11-year-old boy he stalked after seeing his photo in a newspaper.

What's with all the time off? Wasn't Florida in second place for executing the most people per year for a long time there? They have a rep to uphold, you can't slack off like that for that long. Damn.

I never considered myself a supporter of the death penalty but this guy makes me realize I fully support killing scum like this and hopefully he was in severe pain before he died.

This guy was a particularly heinous child killer. Out of prison a month from a prior conviction for raping a 13-year-old, he saw the picture of an 11-year-old in a Florida paper, befriended the kid's family under the guise of knowing the reporter, then called the kid's school pretending to be his dad to arrange a meeting place after school where he could abduct him.

It's hard not to think the world's a much better place for his absence. If he had ever been released again, does anyone doubt that he'd stalk and murder another child?

The name Kenneth McDuff comes to mind.

I don't understand why the "pain" issue should be considered in executions. I mean, we used to burn people at the stake, cut their nuts off, bash them over the head with hammers, rip them up with horses, fry them in oil, hang draw and quarter them...

I mean, does the perp ever think about the "pain" he's inflicting on the victim?

All childkiller/rapists should have a "Starke" view at the conclusion of their life.

He didn't. He just closed his eyes, and after the warden confirmed he was unconscious, the other two drugs were administered.

No revenge.

The Death Penalty the Ultimate in Hypocrisy. Yeah what the Guy did was horrible beyond belief but if one life is Precious aren't they all??

Larry

I don't understand why the "pain" issue should be considered in executions.

The Eighth Amendment: "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."

life is Precious aren't they all??

Larry

Some more than others. but I think we should lock people up throw away the key and lose the death penalty

"I don't understand why the "pain" issue should be considered in executions."

Because our founding fathers believed that the government does not have the right to inflict cruel and unusual punishment on any person. The Constitution that they wrote and that we live under today specifically protects each person's natural right to not be treated cruelly. They were well aware of the types of punishments you describe which were practiced in Europe and that our founders felt were not appropriate in an enlightened society. Many years ago our Supreme Court interpreted the Constitution to mean that while a death penalty was not neccessarily cruel or unusual, it has to be applied in a humane manner.

The crime committed by the murderer may be horrible but we do not operate at the level of criminals and consider death to be punishment enough as well as the convict knowing the time, place and manner of his death and having time to contemplate what is to be done. Anything beyond that is between the criminal and his maker, if you believe in that kind of thing.

So "It's" bak with a recycled handle. Why am I NOT surprised.

Larry

It is cruel and unusual punishment for the American people to be brutually taxed to pay for criminals for the rest of their lives.

We must feed, clothe, provide medical care, free education, rehabilitation, etc. etc.

It is the taxpayer that the 8th isn't protecting.

Out of prison a month from a prior conviction for raping a 13-year-old

The Judge, the Defense attorney, the parole board... anyone who played a role, in this man getting out of jail should be imprisoned themselves.

Actually anyone who argues that child rapists should ever be released from prison, deserve to sit along side the rapists they defend.

The only problem I see with the death penalty is that there have been, and probably will be again, innocent people put to death.

Obviously this guy was guilty but there are situations where it's not as cut and dry.

"Beyond a REASONABLE doubt' just isn't enough in my mind to kill someone.

Anyway, I'm just saying

The Judge, the Defense attorney, the parole board... anyone who played a role, in this man getting out of jail should be imprisoned themselves.

The biggest reason why violent criminals get out early is because we fill our prisons with non-violent drug offenders.

If the jails are full, then follow the proper course.

The Constitution allows for slavery for convicts.

Start the auctions and watch crime drop.

"The only problem I see with the death penalty is that there have been, and probably will be again, innocent people put to death.

I gotta agree. We can't trust the system when it's full of police and prosecutors who just wanna "win." Besides, DNA has freed a lot of innocent people. Makes me wonder about the cases where there is no DNA.
This guy was a no brainer, but why didn't they even SEEK the death penalty against OJ? How would YOU like having Nifong be prosecuting you for rape and murder? No...just sentence them to HARD life in prison, they'll suffer enough at the hands of the other inmates.

"if one life is Precious aren't they all??"

No

"The biggest reason why violent criminals get out early is because we fill our prisons with non-violent drug offenders."

We just don't learn from past mistakes. The "war on drugs" is a repeat of Prohibition. Legalize drugs and the drug-related crime will be drastically reduced just like crime decreased with the repeal of Prohibition. Off the track somewhat, but related...outlawing guns hasn't decreased crime much either.

"if one life is Precious aren't they all?? Larry"

Yes Larry, Schwab was precious in the eyes of some. He should have the right to live a full and fulfilling life.... It's a joke, Larry. With life comes responsibility.

Those who want the death penalty should understand that extremist opinions damage their position. Keep it moderate to keep it going.

Inmate are expensive. Some jail services should be outsourced to inexpensive countries.

Wrong convictions are a problem. Death penalty should not be applied at the first crime committed. Don't worry, there will be enough left to execute.

Death penalty is somewhat cruel. Death penalty PLUS organs explant is not. Even the Chinese have something to teach.

The point, ladies, is that by offing this bastard we sink to his level. Kill a killer in MY name makes ME a killer. I suspect that the yahoos cheering loudest at this are also noisiest against reproductive rights. I guess it's that fetuses don't commit rape. Something like that. herm

"by offing this bastard we sink to his level. Kill a killer in MY name makes ME a killer"

You're an ass Herm. You don't like the death penalty then move to Massachusetts. Pay the taxes that give inmates massages, golf courses and "personal encounters."

I'll pay the taxes that give them three squares and a concrete cell. And puts them down like a rabid dog.

"Roll on two....."

The biggest reason why violent criminals get out early is because we fill our prisons with non-violent drug offenders.

Someone still has to say, "Okay child rapist, you're free to go," and that person should be sent to prison. If I were the father of the child this rapist killed, I'd be looking for justice on the people who set him free.

"You don't like the death penalty then move to Massachusetts. Pay the taxes that give inmates massages, golf courses and "personal encounters.""

No, we don't have the DP in Mass despite years of effort by Romney, Cellucci and Weld. And no, our prisons aren't country clubs either; if anything since a lot of our buildings are older they are pretty dismal. I had a couple guards at the max security facility in Walpole as clients and from their descriptions it's no place you'd want to be.

Oh, and Mass taxes aren't as high as people think, in fact we rank at about the middle of the pack last I checked. Probably a lower income / sales tax rate than where you are.

So you are against abortion Larry?

If you want to live in a society, then comply with certain social limitations on behavior. Otherwise you forfeit your life. This bastard deserved tof be snuffed. Unfortunately, the interpretation of " pain" has been made ludicrous by the courts, so that there was even the contention that the needle prick was "cruel and unuusal." It was neither "cruel," nor "unusual." Have you ever given blood? Stubbed your toe?

It's a mundane everyday thing that we experience in our daily lives. The damned courts are given to exaggeration and get carried away with words as if the words "were" the reality.

The "cruelty" should be offset by the depravity of the crime. Too bad that he didn't suffer. I would give him to the victim's family to dispose of as they would over a period of time, and provide the family with free consultation with a neurologist so they could maximize their opportunity to avenge the poor child this creep killed.

It seems some of you are emotionally deprived and have no feelings of empathy with the victims of these crimes. Cold-blooded defenders of the lives of vicious murderers, you are. What you folks need is an infusion of humanity. It's your misfortune that you lack the ability to experience feelings. What a way to live life. Emotionless and with a cold and sterile existence. Poor Larry Mohr. More to be pitied than scorned.

"...comply with certain social limitations on behavior (or) forfeit your life."

What limits? Gas folks who wear Fuck Bush tee shirts?

"This bastard deserved tof be snuffed."

NObody "deserves" to be snuffed. Read my post. Again.

"... give him to the victim's family to ... maximize their opportunity to avenge..."

Drawing and quartering or dismembering the bastard with wild horses probably won't make the mourners feel better, and even more probably won't bring the kid back.

"Cold-blooded defenders of the lives of vicious murderers, you are."

Which wins Johnson the Gold Pot and Kettle Award for 2008. herm

"Unfortunately, the interpretation of " pain" has been made ludicrous by the courts, so that there was even the contention that the needle prick was "cruel and unuusal." "

No, it's not the needle prick. It was, mainly, the discovery that the first drug may render the condemned unable to move but still conscious. The second and third drugs - which shut down breathing and heart respectively - would be extremely painful without the anesthetic up front. If the condemned was not knocked out by the first drug, he would experience this.

I'm not a proponent of the death penalty, but it seems to me that it would be simpler to just give them a massive overdose of barbituates in a single shot which just puts them to sleep and out, like we put down an animal.

"The "cruelty" should be offset by the depravity of the crime. Too bad that he didn't suffer. I would give him to the victim's family to dispose of as they would over a period of time, and provide the family with free consultation with a neurologist so they could maximize their opportunity to avenge the poor child this creep killed."

Again, we have this pesky thing called a constitution that protects each and every one of us from certain things including cruel and unusual punishment. The bill of rights doesn't say "cruel punishment is prohibited except for people who do 'x'". It's prohibited plain and simple. And, from a Christian point of view, anyhow (because it seems that the ones who are the biggest fans of killing prisoners are also the loudest proclaimers of Christian faith), even Jesus spoke about not taking revenge on your enemies. The penalty is death, not "death after you are tortured".

"It seems some of you are emotionally deprived and have no feelings of empathy with the victims of these crimes. Cold-blooded defenders of the lives of vicious murderers, you are. "

Bull. We care tremendously about crime victims and many of us have children that we care about and would be devastated if something happened like this. And we'd feel hate and terrible anger and would want to hurt the person that did this. Don't make the assumption that since we choose to respond to uncivilized behavior in a civilized manner that we don't care about the victims first and foremost. That's not true at all and is simply a straw man argument by people like you who seem to wish to bring us all down to the level of the criminal. Civilized people don't do what this murderer did.

"Out of prison a month from a prior conviction for raping a 13-year-old"...

And the SCOTUS liberal judges just ruled that the death penalty can't apply to this crime.

Deterrance missed opportunity by letting this guy out and then went to kill this little boy.

Child rapists need to be incarcerated Mandatory life without parole.

That will take the decision-making process away from parole board members, judges and probation officers.

"That (mandatory life, no parole) will take the decision-making process away from parole board members, judges and probation officers."

I cannot for the life of me see who anyone would want to do that. Does old Murph not trust her friends and neighbors to be able to judge in these situations? herm

When they know you're innocent, most Prosecutors want you first in line, so there's no time for the truth to come out and possible embarrasment.

This does nothing to stop crime, but its a helluva deterent to free speech, let alone thought.

The biggest reason why violent criminals get out early is because we fill our prisons with non-violent drug offenders.

???

His crime also included KILLING the boy, so the DP can apply.

I'll NEVER get over these frothing-at-the-mouth cannibals who favor executions, wars for oil, Bush, McBush and fetal rights. As predictable as tomorrow's dawn, they toe the party line and dwell on the heinousness of the crime; no one denies that, and if they convince me that pulling the killer apart limb from limb would bring the victim back (even make him feel better), I'd change my tune. Right now, however, nothing more substantial than one calling me an ass. Well, whatever. herm

No.

No this guy should have died by small razorblade cuts filled with pig dung which takes weeks!

Drawing and quartering or dismembering the bastard with wild horses probably won't make the mourners feel better,

God forbid you have a child die like this, I bet you would beg to differ...

RCADE,

I like your posts in this thread...

A word on deterrence.

If death penalty were not a good deterrent, why should mob bosses themselves inflict this sentence to punish other mobsters' undesired behaviors?

Why don't they keep the offenders locked away for a while instead, providing them with full boarding and girlfriends' visits?

This simple consideration should stop this senseless debate once for all. Most criminals are scared to die as we human beings are, too.
