"Unfortunately, the interpretation of " pain" has been made ludicrous by the courts, so that there was even the contention that the needle prick was "cruel and unuusal." "
No, it's not the needle prick. It was, mainly, the discovery that the first drug may render the condemned unable to move but still conscious. The second and third drugs - which shut down breathing and heart respectively - would be extremely painful without the anesthetic up front. If the condemned was not knocked out by the first drug, he would experience this.
I'm not a proponent of the death penalty, but it seems to me that it would be simpler to just give them a massive overdose of barbituates in a single shot which just puts them to sleep and out, like we put down an animal.
"The "cruelty" should be offset by the depravity of the crime. Too bad that he didn't suffer. I would give him to the victim's family to dispose of as they would over a period of time, and provide the family with free consultation with a neurologist so they could maximize their opportunity to avenge the poor child this creep killed."
Again, we have this pesky thing called a constitution that protects each and every one of us from certain things including cruel and unusual punishment. The bill of rights doesn't say "cruel punishment is prohibited except for people who do 'x'". It's prohibited plain and simple. And, from a Christian point of view, anyhow (because it seems that the ones who are the biggest fans of killing prisoners are also the loudest proclaimers of Christian faith), even Jesus spoke about not taking revenge on your enemies. The penalty is death, not "death after you are tortured".
"It seems some of you are emotionally deprived and have no feelings of empathy with the victims of these crimes. Cold-blooded defenders of the lives of vicious murderers, you are. "
Bull. We care tremendously about crime victims and many of us have children that we care about and would be devastated if something happened like this. And we'd feel hate and terrible anger and would want to hurt the person that did this. Don't make the assumption that since we choose to respond to uncivilized behavior in a civilized manner that we don't care about the victims first and foremost. That's not true at all and is simply a straw man argument by people like you who seem to wish to bring us all down to the level of the criminal. Civilized people don't do what this murderer did.
