Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Governor Matt Blunt (the guy who can't run for re-election because he committed fraud by email) signed into law yesterday a bill that imposes a Class A misdemeanor for for cyberbullying and stalking an adult, and a Class D felony if the victim is under 17 years of age. The AP story is at: MSNBC

So you cyberpunks have been warned...

Don't get wrong, bullying or harrasing people over the Internet or in real life is obviously wrong, but praytell how do they enforce this law if the one doing the bullying lives somewhere in Eastern Europe or in some other lawless country or a country we don't have diplomatic relations, extradition treaties, etc?

how do they enforce this law if the one doing the bullying lives somewhere in Eastern Europe

Guess you haven't heard of the "long arm statute" have you? ;-)

While this does have its serious side, and Lori Drew should burn in hell, you can bet it will perk up the Drama Queens.

Wonder what the consequences will be if this law goes national?

How much of what goes on here would be considered "bullying"?

Like rcade doesn't have enough legal problems already.

This whole bullying thing is bull. Not the existence of bullies but the sad need to due something about. As HAGBARD CELINE was wondering "How much of what goes on here would be considered "bullying"".

HB--Too damned much. I am no more than most a prude or offended by bad language. Some posters can't type without getting as nasty as they can. I believe that putting down a post is what you are here for(or support). Not have some delinquent start in with how you are a pussy cock sucker. Save the oral steriods for face to face. That will stop most. I expect to hear the usual about stay out if you can't take it and more. My ability to take simple gratuitous swearing is as good as anyones. I just hate people that hide behind the anonymity of the web to make big talk. And no that doesn't ask that all who get mad should exchange addresses and fight. Just don't try to make a fight verbally by swearing stupidly.

"you are a pussy cock sucker"

What video are you watching?

So Mike Siesel Himself is in Violation of His own post here from His past. Funny Dat Be.

Enactment of anti-bullying laws over the internect will never happen. Unlike real-life bullying, the victim has the option to leave the arena. He can choose to simply not log onto the DR or whereever the allegged bullying is taking place.

This will never pass. Or if it does and is enforced, it will fall quickly in a court of law.

OA are you a 17 year-old chick?

What about when it's done via email? you block one address, then they sign up for another and the cycle continues.

What about when it's done via email? you block one address, then they sign up for another and the cycle continues.

in that rare case, the person being bullied can change their email address and only notify their friends. It's nice to take some responsibility for our own well being rather than rely on government regulations for our well being - don't you think?

Interesting.

Is this more Nanny Statism or can this idear possibly work out positively and prevent more cyberbullying attacks?

The difference between cyber bullying and the old school low-tech type of bullying is the fact that cyber-bullies leave a discernable trail fer law enforcement to follow up on.

That sed, the case that spawned this decision was an odd one.

Lori Drew, as has been mentioned, was a absolute cow fer doing wot she did.

Megan's mom was a moron fer immediately screaming at her daughter fer breaking the house internets ruleZ when Megan went to her fer solace after she found that final message from Josh aka Lori Drew.

"Everybody in O'Fallon knows how you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a shitty rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you"

(Here at the DR that level of diss would qualify as a softball lob. Much less nasty than the norm but still... better spelled than most righties around here can manage)

Megan herself was an idiot fer falling fer the ruse and fer taking the opinion of someone she never even met so fucking seriously.

People who untertake to write serious death threats and mount unrelenting cyber stalking campaigns might well benefit from a visit from a cyber cop who specialises in these sort of cases.

That sed, at the end of the day, from the free speech and anti-Nanny statist perspective of me personal politics Spud sees nothing but potential trouble putting this admittedly noble idea into actual practise.

Is a Slippery fucking Slope, innit?

Be Well.

PS: Spud to Ozhole:

Everybody at the DR knows how you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a shitty rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you.

^_^

Ha! Spud keeds. Spud's a kidder!

Come on, spud... she was a little girl who thought she had an online boyfriend. that's awfully cold of you to call her an idiot.

Fredo, I agree that an adult should take the situation into their own hands and change their address or something, but an exception has to be made, I think, for children.
It's kinda hard to keep your email private when you're a school kid.

Come on, spud... she was a little girl who thought she had an online boyfriend. that's awfully cold of you to call her an idiot.

Cold? Perhaps. Spud places the majority of the blame on the Biatch who set her up and sent the e-mail that sent her into her closet with suicidal thoughts.

The next largest portion of the blame goes to her Mom who went into punish mode when she should have gone into Solace mode.

But to not put a measure of blame on the girl who was fooled, who took anonymous criticism all too seriously would be to ignore personal responsibility and to capitulate entirely to the theory of pure victimhood.

Sorry, but Spud can't do that.

Better to have called her a "fool" than an "idiot" in hindsight.

Her Mom was an insensitive idiot and Lori Drew was a self loathing, immature, mean spirited biatch.

This law while well intended could result in undesirable and unwanted consequences.

Be Well.

I am pre-emptively bullying the lot of you....anonymously, of course....

Spud, if she were an adult, I'd agree with you.

But she was a child.

And she's dead.

She did not have the requisite emotional maturity to be able to deal with it in the manner you suggest.

Show just a little class, eh?

She did not have the requisite emotional maturity to be able to deal with it in the manner you suggest.

Obviously.

That acknowleged, do you not think it was foolish of her to take her own life so unneccessarily?

Do you think she was wise to do that?

Spud thought it was righties who were supposed to be all about personal responsibility and rugged individualism and lefties who were commited to the notion of perpetual victimhood and political correctness.

Spud calls 'em the way he sees 'em.

While Spud thinks it's nice that yer able to show empathy fer the ragic death of this teenaged girl Spud also feels strongly that to turn her into a total victim without a shred of personal responsibility makes other kids contemplating such a move more prone to want to follow her into their own graves.

Do. Not. Want.

Be Well.

PS: You wanna see cold?

I am NOT opening that link.

Suicide is never wise I guess. but that's a bigger conversation for some future thread.

"Spud thought it was righties who..."

Are you referring to my reluctance to endorse Obama? Is that the only possible reason a person wouldn't do so... that they're a rightie?

That's an awfully simplisitc view of American political thought.

That may be a conversation too big for any thread here.

I am NOT opening that link.

Prolly a wise move on yer part.

Are you referring to my reluctance to endorse Obama?

Actually Spud is fergit how you self identify fer a sec.

Is that the only possible reason a person wouldn't do so... that they're a rightie?

Not the only reason.

A paid up subscription to Klansman Kwarterly would be another reason that isn't strictly political.

(If yer interested leave an e-mail with Johnson he'll get you a discount)

That's an awfully simplisitc view of American political thought.

Spud has observed here at the DR and elsewhere that an awful lot of American political thought is simplistic.

Oft times to a painful degree, in fact.

That may be a conversation too big for any thread here

No conversation is too big.

No need to write a treatise or manifesto on the subject.

Just do it on the installment plan like Spud does.

Be Well.

/Dins now. Tres Yum. Steak, Greek Salad and Baked Taters.

//Yes, Deth is cannibal Spud! Woo Hoo!

I'm gonna overlook your Klan comment...

As a starter, spud, look back at my posts on today's Arianna thread. You'll find I agree with you more than you immediately realize.

Enjoy the moo moo and papas.

What about when it's done via email? you block one address, then they sign up for another and the cycle continues.

You can block the address. They won't know it wasn't received. But if he suspects that and wants to create new accounts, the emailer will spend much more time creating new accounts than it takes the receiver to block them. He'll soon grow tired of the game.

Kids have nothing but time on their hands, goat. Your tactic will only work with adults. sane ones.

"She did not have the requisite emotional maturity to be able to deal with it in the manner you suggest."

If I remember correctly she was also bipolar so it wasn't just emotional immaturity but emotional instability as well.
