David Olive: If you were trying to develop a less effective means of kicking the gasoline habit and coping with climate change you'd be challenged to improve on North America's misguided biofuels policy, which is centered on corn-based ethanol and is contributing to the global food crisis. "Biofuels are economical nonsense, ecologically useless and ethically indefensible," Nestle SA chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe.

What do you expect when you have an idiot in the White House?

If you want to spend $25 for a gallon of biofuel, then by all means, let's do it.

Politics isn't about economics; it's about dispensing favors.

Quid pro quo.

"What do you expect when you have an idiot in the White House?"

Well said! You were referring this, weren't you?:

Washington Post June 23, 2008
"Since entering the Senate in 2005, Obama has been a staunch supporter of ethanol -- he justified his vote for for the Bush Administration's 2005 energy bill, which was favorable to the oil industry, on the grounds that it also contained subsidies for ethanol and other forms of alternative energy, and he has sought earmarks for research projects on ethanol and other biofuels in his home state of Illinois, the second-highest corn-producing state after Iowa."

"The fact is, though, that Obama's record in the Senate has been very clearly influenced by what he viewed as the needs of his Illinois constituents, particularly those in "downstate" Illinois, where Obama has pointed to his popularity as proof that he can win over voters in more rural and conservative areas. Obama is supporting the new farm bill, which McCain also derides as wasteful"

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Olive says corn is nonsense.

See the battle at Kitchen Stadium.

The oil cartel is sucking us dry, and yet our government sits complacently by and does not use our assets, our military, to provide us with immediate interim succor.

In the meantime, the actual extent of the stock market fall is masked by the decline in the value of the dollar. Las Vegas, the gambling industry, which was putatively "recession proof," has empty casinos. Turkey farms are closing down because of the high cost of corn, impoverishing areas dependent on that industry. People in the restaurant and service industries are experiencing declines in income because customers eat out less frequently, go to the stylist less frequently, and leave smaller tips. With less money circulating the economy will experience a disaster.

And yet, there are no heroic measures. Our fleet is not deployed to intimidate oil producers to supply the United States with its needs. No crash program has been undertaken to secure alternative energy resources. During WWII, the U.S. retooled in a year. We need shale oil available immediately, so a crash program is necessary.

Where are the Republicans? Where are the Democrats? Neither will provide plans for development of a reasonable program. This planet cannot sustain its present burgeoning populations. Braggarts 0. Malthus scores and wins. We are in crisis. This is a national emergency. The empire needs to strike back, and now.

By at least 25%.

Obama has said repeatedly that cellulosic ethanol will replace corn-based ethanol. The company that developed the technology is just south of Chicago and they are building a plant in Pennsylvania. Naturally Ed Rendell has been talking about it as well. But of course the rapid partisans would rather waste their time bashing him instead of listening, and maybe doing a bit of homework.

Madison, PA April 25, 2008 Coskata Inc., a leading developer of next-generation biofuels, said today it will produce 40,000 gallons of cellulosic ethanol a year at a commercial demonstration plant near Pittsburgh.

The $25 million plant will be located at the Westinghouse Plasma Center, the current site of a pilot-plant gasifier owned and operated by Westinghouse Plasma Corporation (WPC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Alter Nrg Corp.

Coskata has been eager to reach this milestone, because it will be a significant demonstration before building our first commercial plant that we can produce ethanol from non-food based sources for less than $1 a gallon,-- said Bill Roe, president and CEO of Coskata. This facility is being built with some of the leading gasification technology, supplied by Alter NRG, and in one of the most progressive states for next generation ethanol."

if the entire agricultural and timber out put were converted to oil, it would be a tiny fraction of our annual consumption.

Ozarkaggie, a whole 40,000 gallons of cellulosic ethanol a year. Wow, I am impressed. That would fuel about a hundred cars a year.

Let me tell you the solutions you dingbat liberal dumbasses come up with get more ridiculous every day. The only thing worse is the length to which you asswipes will go to defend them.

You've been listening to your dad talk to those nice people from the Special Olympics, haven't you?

Libs love the words "alternative energy". Just say "biofuels, renewable energy, hydrogen cars, wind power, or solar energy" and libs cum in their pants. It doesn't mater if these alternatives are economically sound, ecologically sound, or ethically sound.

Maybe that is what Obama neans by "change". He means "change for the worse".

Wow, 29 minutes to log off and log back in and post another retarded, no-nothing "retort". Is that the best you can do?

Tomorrow Monday, there will be thousands of Buses, thousands of cars going to work using ETHANOL, if there was no ETHANOL thousands of vechicles would be using Gasoline an the price would be over $5.00 a gallon by now.

Brazil, has managed to do this but it has taken 30 years, when we had to face the Gas crisis in the 1970's they took it seriously we didn't. Had Ronald Reagan, followed President Carters lead we would be in this mess today.

I know that you fucks on the right love to bang on President Carter but he warn the Country but nobody wanted to listen, he even had SOLAR PANELS installed on the White House, which Ronald Reagan had removed once he became President....These are Facts deal with it.....

The Coskata plant in Pennsylvania is a pilot project used to refine the production techniques. The plant is modular so it can be mass produced. Further it can also use solid waste from sewage treatment plants so it is not dependent on wood chips.

The fact is we need a diverse mix of technologies. There's no single solution that addresses all our needs. The goal, however, is to eliminate our dependence on imported oil, and what works in a metropolitan area may be adverse to the needs in rural areas.

Of course the farsighted strategy of the Bush Administration has now placed a moratorium on solar facilities on public land for "environmental" reasons. When you realize that most of the land out west is owned by the federal government, and private land is very expensive, this action inhibits future development, as it is designed to do.

Ignorance and apathy are the mainstays of the critics. Rather than putting their minds to use finding innovative ways to solve a problem they castigate those who are open to new technologies. They are, in the words of our VP, the "dead enders."

Oh, come on!!! I'm sure the price would be $12 a gallon by now!!!

If you are going to make shit up like the ranting pussy that you are then you could at least could jump off the cliff for our entertainment.

BTW, you just asserted that this really is about supply and demand (like you know shit anyway). the rest of the left will have to disown you (the reasonable ones never did like you anyway).

LOL

Why do libs expect the fucking government to do everything for them. Why don't you assholes buy solar panels for your roof or put a windmill in your backyard if you think alternative energy is such a wonderful idea? The tecnology is out there, buy it, install it, test it, report back to DR on how great it works.

"EBERLY"...You will make more sense if you take that dick out of your Ass, an think straight. What about what I said do you thinkis not a FACT??? Don't waste you fucking time Facts are Facts ASSHOLE!!!!

Why don't you assholes buy solar panels for your roof...

It's more efficient to add solar facilities to existing powerplants due to the advantage of the infrastructure and distribution networks. Large consumers of electricity - like industrial plants - can also gain an advantage, but covering your roof with solar panels would not be cost effective because you'd need battery storage.

But thanks for proving my point regarding the ignorance of the critics.

"Don't waste you fucking time Facts are Facts ASSHOLE!!!!

I've got to admit, I like your style.

"I know that you fucks on the right love to bang on President Carter but he warn the Country but nobody wanted to listen, he even had SOLAR PANELS installed on the White House"

With the electricity the white house uses the whole building and lawn could be covered and still not make a dent in savings. So it was all a grand show for 'those fucks on the left' that didn't bang on Carter so they would feel good about him.

" the whole building and lawn could be covered and still not make a dent in savings. "

Pardon me for noticing your complete lack of credibility.

Both political parties tried to gain favor with the farmers. No one gave it much thought. As for the scientists, they are the biggest prostitutes around. They will bless anything for a buck. They have been working on turning lead into gold and trying to produce the miracle battery for two hundred years. Proof that John McCain is truly brain dead.

You know I lost MPG's when I tried 10% Ethanol for a two month period. In fact My car was harder to start with 10% ethanol compared to conventional gasoline. Funny Dat Be.

Got a little too star-warsy toward the end for me, but all-in-all I think I have stroke the Johnson on this one.

One of the few times I aggree wih you.

You know I lost MPG's when I tried 10% Ethanol for a two month period. In fact My car was harder to start with 10% ethanol compared to conventional gasoline. Funny Dat Be.

Two questions. Where do you live? What type of car do you drive?

I've never seen gas that said it contained exactly 10% Ethanol. I've only seen pumps that say it contains UP TO 10% Ethanol. Small detail, but big difference. Also living in the north east and frequently traveling between NY and VA I don't remember the last time I saw a pump that didn't say that on it.

If you're putting in the right quality (octane) of gas for your type of engine you shouldn't have any problems at all. Even if you're putting in a lower octane gas you still shouldn't experience many problems if any as most modern engines are made to run on even the lowest octane gas. Sure there is the possibility that you might lose a tiny bit of efficiency, it might add up to like a half mile or mile per gallon but I'm willing to bet it's your driving style that makes you lose MPG more than anything.

As far as the car starting goes I've never heard anyone say their car had a harder time starting up with the 10% Ethanol gas. Not saying it's not possible but I'd look at a bunch of other possibilities before I even began to look at the fuel source.

I've never heard anyone say their car had a harder time starting up with the 10% Ethanol gas.

You have to consider the source.

Right now biofuel won't work but with advances through research and development, maybe it could. I love how people want to immediately dismiss this as if they don't know that many new technologies take a while to get right. The other thing I find amusing is that biofuel is "unethical" because it uses up resources that could be used to grow food. Do the geniuses who say this realize how many people are going to starve when we are unable to transport food from the places it is grown to the places it is needed?

I'm not saying biofuel is the answer or even part of the answer. We shouldn't be subsidizing biofuel as much as we should be subsidizing research on alternative energy sources in general. But the dismissive attitude people are so eager to take when it comes to this is ignorant and counter productive. Everyone knows it isn't going to work now. Now shut the fuck up and let's see if someone can get it to work.

Ethanol production did not make the price of corn go up. The price of gas was one of the major contributors to corn going up and all other foodstuffs. Also just wait for the prices after all of the midwest floods. It costs more to produce corn now and it costs more to transport the corn. Many of the ethanol plants in this country are owned by co-ops of the actual corn farmers. Why is this a liberal/conservative issue. It is purely supply and demand, except there is no cartel involved (OPEC). Oil is not a supply and issue. You have a cartel which is illegal here in the US controlling the price of imported oil. It is also not a refining capacity issue. I know of at least a dozen oil refineries onn US soil that are mothballed and ready for startup but their owners refuse to bring them back online.

# Reducing DoD Fossil-Fuel Dependence, JSR-06-135, September 2006

In light of an increasing U.S. dependence on foreign oil, as well as rising fuel costs for the U.S. and the DoD, and implications with regard to national security and national defense, JASON was charged in 2006 by the DDR&E to assessing pathways to reduce DoD's dependence on fossil fuels.

The only solar technology that can surpass 50% efficiency is concentrating mirrors and steam turbines generating electricity.

Biofuels, except for waste like grease traps and carcasses, etc., are stupid.

From that report:

There is NO energy benefit from corn ethanol.
