Jesus, you are dense. ANYONE you give your email address to are can see it is a potential stalker! The anonymous nature of the net makes it more likely than anywhere else.

Especially if you get in a lot of fights on the blog you post your address on!

Any newbie coming here should have common sense and not post their email in a public forum. And they should be very selective with whom(if anyone) they give that address out to.

Do you leave your phone number on bathroom stalls, farmer john? Of course you don't. hell, you have your email address set to private HERE.

Oh, there was no fight here at all. Jackass/Messiah signed on to Nanc's blog using the anonymous feature as "danforth", and scummed up the place, getting multiple dumps. He went so far as to have his sock puppet admit defeat! (How friggin' pwned does one have to be for that?

Within a few hours, I'd tracked his ip through the site meter (thanks for the lesson, Nanc!), discovered the source, and confronted Jackass/Messiah. Then he admitted it, send me some self-destruct emails, and begged me to leave him alone.

I bitch-slapped him for a while, and plan to continue until he posts an apology to the unsuspecting folks over at Nanc's blog.

But no fight. A lot of victory dancing, since I OWN Jackass/Messiah, but the only person he humiliated ultimately was himself.

RWD never has pissed in North Dakota when it is 30 below out. It piles up like a frozen piss snow cone. Oh and it does Wonders for Your circuation there too.

There's a difference between whining about how unfair "the Net" is, asking "don't you want me here?" and demanding "netequette" from people. You aren't going to get anywhere with that. What works is being wise about what you do with information about yourself.

The only constructive feedback from this episode is that RCade should post a warning about publicizing your e-mail addy. It boggles my mind that anyone would publish a "real" e-mail addy anywhere on the net, but I keep seeing people do it. Go figure.

I heard nanc talking about tracking someone else awhile ago using this method. What the hell are people "tracking other people for anyway? I realize in this case it was to catch some blog vandal, but nanc was trying to find out what time zone someone was posting from or something like that.

People who get victimized by internet stalkers need to simply "toughen up", "get thicker skinned" and not condemn the coarseness of political discourse.

That's easier said than done. On communities I've belonged to, some members have been harassed at their jobs and/or homes by people who don't have the sense to keep an online disagreement online.

Here, it's against the rules to drag a personal argument on the Retort into real life or take outside arguments here. I actively discourage that stuff when it's called to my attention -- flag comments as "abuse" or send me an email using the box on the front page.

The pretext fer this thread is enuff to make one want to puke.

The number of responses is enuff to make one actually do so.

If you're posting on a political blog, you're dealing with the scum of the earth... as this post will attest. There are a LOT of people who think that is something isn't "illegal" (and sometimes even if it IS) then others have no room to complain. BS.

RCADE, I haven't had any problems here yet. But I hope you'll see fit to review your voluntary e-mail option and take action against those who would abuse posting privledges. You're running a Sitemeter. You should be able to identify precisely who they are.
