Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Seymour Hersh: Late last year, Congress agreed to a request from President Bush to fund a major escalation of covert operations against Iran, according to current and former military, intelligence, and congressional sources. These operations, for which the President sought up to $400 million dollars, were described in a Presidential Finding signed by Bush, and are designed to destabilize the country's religious leadership.

If at first, you don't succeed, keep poking at the hornets nest.

They are not going to work. If anything, overt threats from Israel and the US would have the effect of uniting Iranians behind the leadership.

I guess it isn't covert anymore.

So now what?

Anarchy and mass resignations at the Pentagon?

President Lugnut strikes again!

so most of the time when there is a headline at the top that large, its something that I can find out on cnn or npr or the like and I hear nothing about this. and then I read the rest and its not like an operation going on as we speak with fighting and chaos.........so why the SCARE TACTIC?

In Bush's brain its AOK for him to launch terrorist attacks on whomever he chooses for whatever reason he concocts. When he does it he's saving us, but when they do it, even to defend themselves against US domination, they're killers.

Has anyone noticed yet the consequences of this morons schemes? Economic collapse, unnecessary war and complete indifference to human suffering.

We did not really elect this asshole. He was installed with twisted partisan logic and vote rigging. Like everyone is condemning now in Zimbabwe. Its absurd to listen to Shrub condemn Mugabe, they are from the same mold, both liars, except George is not very good at that either.

The U.S. has a long history of covert actions.

Unfortunately, rarely have positive long-term results been generated. Usually, they've been a bust with adverse, long-term effects.

Nutcase,

I hate to break it to you, but Bush won both of his elections.

Surprise. We've had covert ops in that country and many others in that area since before that great Demopussy Jimmy Carter let them hostagize us. For the left to pretend that this is something new, in order to facilitate even more trouser leakage, is preposterous.

If Seymour Hersh reports it, it's a pretty good bet that he's reporting something newsworthy. The next report he writes will probably be on how we are unrolling an authorization to start war with Iran via a "blockade" without any publicity at all. See: www.drudge.com

How will a war with Iran this August or September affect the elections? Probably ensures that McCain gets elected. That probably ensures that the Bush Cheney teams get the cover they need to hide their tracks and enjoy the spoils of having enriched their friends in the resource extraction industries. So Iran and the US public are just a new set of pawns in the game of "expand the GOP plutocracy", it seems.

This just in from a right-wing advisory blog: "Atacking Iran Before Elections Will Help McCain" (www.freerepublic.com)

Why am I becoming so cynical about the GOPs protests that they are "fair and balanced"?

Here's another nail in any pending decision NOT to vote for McCain -- He's in bed with the NEOCONs!

From the Hersh article: " The Washington Post recently quoted Randy Scheunemann, the McCain campaign's national-security director, as stating that McCain supports the White House's position ...

" Scheunemann, who is known as a neoconservative, is also the McCain campaign's most important channel of communication with the White House. He is a friend of David Addington, Dick Cheney's chief of staff. I have heard differing accounts of Scheunemann's influence with McCain; though some close to the McCain campaign talk about him as a possible national-security adviser, others say he is someone who isn't taken seriously while "telling Cheney and others what they want to hear," as a senior McCain adviser put it.

" It is not known whether McCain, who is the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, has been formally briefed on the operations in Iran. At the annual conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, in June, Obama repeated his plea for "tough and principled diplomacy." But he also said, along with McCain, that he would keep the threat of military action against Iran on the table."

So when the president of Iran says he doesn't trust that the U S has honorable intentions, are we supposed to believe him?

For a guy who avoided serving in Vietnam by securing a position to defend Alabama's airspace, President Bush sure seems determined to relive it.

Here's a primer for when he finished The Pet Goat:

"Spies and Commandos: How America Lost the Secret War in North Vietnam"

www.amazon.com

He has finished it by now, right?

We've had covert ops in that country...before that great Demopussy Jimmy Carter let them hostagize us. cockfish

Against the Shah?

What a fool. Covert action takes on many dimensions but you don't operate against friendly dictators. We even sold Pavali F-14s.

When they forced Fallon to resign I knew that Bush was planning to go ahead with an attack on Iran. He's the smartest and best qualified CENTCOM we've had, and anyone still in the neo-con tent truly lacks an appreciation of the situation.

It's sad to think that the only deterrent left is a coup d'tat. We should put Cheney and Bush and all their little buddies on a plane to Geneva and have them tried for war crimes, then lock them in the SuperMax with all the other criminals.

But I don't think this will help McCain. He's a demented bastard, a collaborator, and will only further our slide into a depression. I refuse to think that the American people as a whole are stupid enough to elect him president.

Wait a minute...

Isnt Iran our enemy? Can any liberal tell me any different?

Why are you people arguing for them?

"He's the smartest and best qualified CENTCOM we've had,..."

And you know that how? Because he agrees with YOU...right?

That's also like the push by Pakistan into Taliban areas of the north - it wouldn't surprise me if Bin Laden wasn't "found" just in time to push McCain to electoral victory.

Because he agrees with YOU...right? jestgettingDumber

You got it backwards.

If you read the article you'll see that we're once again supporting the same guys we did in the 80s to defeat the Russians. Only these guys aren't going to win.

The fact is that whole region is totally fucked. We should buy their oil and sell them guns and let them kill one another.

I just hope all of you neo-con pussies will volunteer to go to Iraq when the Shiites in the south retaliate for an attack on Iran and cut our supply lines. And don't give me the too old bullshit. If you can't drive a rig sign up for truck driving school. You might make a useful decoy, or even get through.

Wait a minute...

........I am arguing against military involvement with Iran ON OUR BEHALF.......NOT IRAN's.......

........our country is broke......we are borrowing from China to wage 2 wars.......now we propose to borrow more, become more bankrupt to wage a third war........

.........Why ??........so the Iranians are assholes......big deal.....thats their problem.....I agree we should have responded to 9-11 and taken out the Taliban......but we are just wasting money and lives in Iraq and Iran......

........and these phoney-baloney optional wars are making the Taliban stronger......and we have'nt wiped them out like we should have.........

........more waste.......with nothing to gain.......

By that reasoning, germany was "competitors" too in WW2, right? god, I'm glad I am not liberal...

I dont know why you cant see that islam is the enemy of civilized nations. And I say "islam" because most moderate so called muslims wont do enough to combat radical islam. Islam will continue to push into nations until we realize we are sleeping with the enemy. After all, their culture is at least 200 years behind those of the west, their countries are dirt poor, and most would love to "migrate" to the west. We are already, at least london is, installing foot baths in resteraunts to appease them. And there is serious talk of "dual" legal systems in ultra liberal europe..

All you democrats missed the part of the story where your democrat congress agreed to this and funded it.

I don't know. When my wife makes treats to me, I consider her my sweet little love monkey.

If McCain supports this administration's Iran policy and its Iraq policy, all the more reason to fear not a Democratic vicory, but a McCain victory.

This insanity has to be brough to a stop. The only way to start to stop it is with a strong Democratic administration and Congress.

Meanwhile Bill Clinton won't campaign for his party's campaign.

Isnt Iran our enemy? -- Boaz

Ahmadinejad and the religious radicals are; a substantial number of the people (perhaps a majority) are not. That student protest a few months back was remarkable both for its boldness and because the police did nothing to stop them. www.youtube.com

Why are you people arguing for them? -- Boaz

I'm not; I'm arguing for us. Just as in the case of Iraq (more so, perhaps), there are legitimate questions about whether the costs we'd pay would exceed any benefits. Iran is likely to retaliate by mining the Gulf (think gas is expensive now?) or attacking Israel. And there's a reasonable chance that his own people will toss him out without any interference from us.

The irony is that Ahmadinejad is essentially a carbon copy of Bush. He plays the same fear-mongering game domestically and engages in the same buffoonish saber-rattling internationally.

ff sniper~!

Does this really surprise anyone? Really? There's more coming - wait for it.

I refuse to think that the American people as a whole are stupid enough to elect him president.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the American electorate. One never knows if this election will be settled along racial lines. Either way it hardly matters. Obama is a stalking horse version of McCain.

Isnt Iran our enemy? -- Boaz

Remember also that Iran was our ally in Afghanistan after 9/11 -- and then a month later Bush threw a golden opportunity away by referring to them as part of the "axis of evil."

In the wake of the 11 September 2001 attacks on the US, there were some tentative steps.

In Iran, vast crowds turned out on the streets and held candlelit vigils for the victims. Sixty-thousand spectators respected a minute's silence at Tehran's football stadium.

Some of Iran's leaders also sensed an opportunity. America quickly fixed its sights on the Taleban in Afghanistan with whom the Iranians had nearly come to war just three years earlier.

With a common enemy in the Taleban, the two found grounds to co-operate...

And just a few weeks after Iran and the US had worked so closely over Afghanistan, Iran was described by President George W Bush as part of an "axis of evil" in his 2002 State of the Union address.

Javad Zarif, now Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, said this was a big surprise after the co-operation over the Afghan government.

"We were all shocked by the fact that the US had such a short memory and was so ungrateful about what had happened just a month ago," he said. news.bbc.co.uk

That false impression is what makes him such an excellent stalking horse. He's pro-Israel pro-war all the way.

And, as we recall, another member of the "Axis of Evil", North Korea, is being dropped from the list, a list that should never have been made, and which was the product of neo-con fantasists who found it only too easy to insert it into the tiny mind of George W Bush.

Have you been around when the Dems here are talking about Nancy Pelosi? Unlike you Kool-Aid drinkers who could compliment the Shrub if he broke into your house ("How creative of him!") and took a c*** on your living room carpet ("What a lovely pattern!") This pre-emptive strike BS is exactly that.

Bullshit.

Nowhere has Boy Bluner Bush shown his confusion more than with the Kurds. Bush calls the PKK Kurds terrorists while the Iraqi Kurds funnel support to the PKK. Bush calls the MEK and PJAK Kurds "freedom fighters" while the Iraqi Kurds funnel support to the MEK and PJAK. Meanwhile, while Boy Blunder talks about his unified Iraq, the Iraqi Kurds in their "autonomous" region prepare for a declaration of an independent Kurdistan. Yep, Chimpy really has his game on.

Bushblower, how many nukes did N. Korea detonate during Clinton's Presidency? How many during Chimpy's? Just like in every other category, the Chimp loses.

and you and your ilk would be the first ones to scream about iran getting nukes on bush's watch.

Following up on REINHEITSGEBOT's post, what Bush has shown is that the only way to get unconditional talks between the U.S. and a tyrant is for that tyrant to get the bomb.

Chastise Obama, call him an "appeaser" and then turn right about and do exactly that when they get the bomb.

Obama's "great sin" to the GOP and McCain is he wants to talk before Iran determines there is no other option but to get the bomb.

When THEY get the bomb? I would have thought after that ruse bombed out in Iraq, who would be fool enough to fall for it again?

if they did such a great job, then why are even talking about it right now.........

Bl2, N. Korea was removed from the terror list because Lil Kim built his nuclear arsenal right under Chimpy's nose.

WHAT? this doesnt make sense. he was removed BECAUSE he built it? he is getting off the list BECAUSE it is being dismantled......WE HOPE......

and where did he GET THE INFO needed to build this stuff anyway???? and where did he get the wherefore to build something to GET it to the target(S)......oh yeah......bill clinton.......

so...are you saying that the little dog eater BUILT nuke stuff TO GET OFF the list?
exlain further please.......

NOW if you want to talk about making sure the little turd does what he is supposed to, let me invoke the words from the 2nd greatest president of the 20th century..........trust but verify

Where did Kim Jung Ill get the stuff to make the Nuclear Materials and wherewithall?? If memory serves Me correctly that would have been from Pakistan cause there was a big ole stink about in roughly 2002 2003. Do try again BLT.

Larry

The North Koreans declared less about their nuclear programs than the administration sought, disclosing nothing about their stockpile of nuclear weapons, suspected uranium enrichment program or alleged role in helping Syria build a reactor.

"I'm under no illusions," Bush said. "This isn't the end of the process." He rattled off a list of U.S. concerns about North Korea including human rights abuses, ballistic missile programs and the threat North Korea poses to its neighbors.

They already have nukes. Bush's little axis-of-evil speech failed miserably. Deal with it.

Who outed this operation?

Where is Patrick Fitzgerald when you need a political witchunt?

Did Valerie Plame have anything to do with it?

I can't wait till Chris Mathews and Keith Olbermann go crazy asking who did this. Oh, you mean they only do that if they think it will make political hay for the republicans. Thats just like a pair of democrat shills isn't it.

The theory is being floated that the Pentagon themselves exposed this covert operation. Gates and the military brass are adamantly against any escalation against Iran and are bucking (not backing) Cheney to the hilt.

Shrub is a terrorist, Shrub is a torturer, Shrub is a wreckless spender, Shrub is an incompetent fool.

Even if attacking Iran were a high priority, which it definately is not, we can count on Shrub to fuck it up. Keep in mind, Iran is 80 million people that will rally round their Mullah's and use their military power to defend against US aggression.

If you think oil prices are bad now just imagine what will happen if our moronic fearless leader launches this attack.

Iraq is still unstable and Iran is four times the Industrial and Military Power of Iraq. Our Military is operating with less and less reliable equipment, particularly for ground forces and demoralized National Guardsman and Reservists. They never signed up for this shit. None of these units ever served in Vietnam. Its a dirty trick to use them in this manner destroying their lives in yet another failed military adventure.

"I hope we can solve it diplomatically, but I will never take any option off the table." That comment was in part a response to questions raised by Seymour Hersh's argument in his article, "The Coming Wars," in the January issue of the New Yorker, that Iran might be the next target in Bush's "war on terror," because Bush and the rad-cons in his administration favor military over diplomatic approaches toward Iran.
hnn.us

I know there are thousands of articles I could print proving Hersh is talking out his ass.

In other words, some members of the Democratic leadershipCongress has been under Democratic control since the 2006 electionswere willing, in secret, to go along with the Administration in expanding covert activities directed at Iran, while the Party's presumptive candidate for President, Barack Obama, has said that he favors direct talks and diplomacy.
Obviously a product of republican obstructionism. Elect more democrats; they'll save us.

I can see it now; sometime in the next decade, when the Iran war is going very badly, all of the "anti-war" Democrats suggesting that Bush/McCain lied them into yet another war.

The only thing our Military Industrial Complex has given us is Bankruptcy. Oh yeah, and two brave wins in Panama and Granada. Enemies are required to feed this monster. Everyone who has a choice is being advised to get the hell out of the dollar.

Is it time to put in the Shahs Son back on his throne. What is he doing in all this.
Time for some payback to Iran. Crocker said that there are no covert ops in Iran.
My question is either he is lying.
Or There should be and why aren't there any?

To cut to the chase---If there is a war with Iran between now and January 20th, can we dispense with any lingering suspicion Bush isn't scum on toast?

I think we should show them how much devastation a nuclear war would cause.
