Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Even the Amish are not immune to the rising costs of oil. "I never realized when fuel prices started going up how much stuff it would affect," said Dan Miller, an Amish carpenter, shopkeeper and horse breeder in Adams County, Ohio. "It affects everything."

I take the train to and from work everyday. Coming into Union Station in Chicago, I used to see Amish families waiting for Amtrak trains quite often.

It's very rare to see them nowadays.

"We depend on taxis to haul us around,"

Get a car already....

It's this absurd hypocrisy that annoys about some Christians.

They can ride in cars, but they cant drive one?

Somehow being a passenger isnt the same as being a driver?

I dont get it.

Or how about this?

Sunday is the Sabbath for Christians. Part of that observance is using it as a day to rest.

Ironically, Pastors of churches dont get to rest on Sunday.

"steadfast faith and rock-hard traditions"

They got THAT right!!

Hypocrisy IS a long standing tradition of certain sects of Christianity.

Who

Fucking

Cares?

WRONG,AMISH THEY DON`T NEED OIL, THEY RIDE HORSES NOT CARS

Well, this is going to keep me up at night - NOT! They are upset because BUSloads of tourists aren't knocking at their store doors? I thought this sect shunned the outside world. Looks like they depend on us savages to keep them afloat. Let them figure out how to mill their own wheat and store food without refrigeration. Refrigeration? I thought they shunned all modern conveniences! Hypocrites.

BillJohnson can sucketh on the sacred rod of knowledege.

Sincerely,

Us Amish

but less than the rest of us.

Ain't no mother-fuckin' Amish be using no computer, quackfish. What the fuck is wrong wit' you?

OK, so I could only glean one thing from this article.

IF they'd use grid-electricity, a lot of their problems would go away. Their main bitch was propane and diesel used to run equipment (I assume the diesel being generators) to keep off the grid.

So not only are they pissing away money on that, they're pissing away fossil fuels to do it.

GET ON THE GRID already, or stfu.

Some of the Amish here in Iowa even have cell phones. Somehow those are OK since they're not tied to the lines.

They can ride in cars, but they can't drive one?

The Hutterites are like the Amish, but they will use technology that makes their farming and other businesses more productive. I always thought that was kind of cool -- no to TVs, yes to Microsoft Excel.

I wonder why the Amish choose to keep themselves separated from our society.

Judging by the comments above, I don't blame them.

I can honestly say I have never had a problem with the Amish, they have never bothered me in any way.

I wish I could say that for other religious sects.

i love the amish, mennonite and similar denominations in the surrounding communities - they have several places of business and are the fairest people on the planet.

one lady sells all her natural vitamins and remedies at cost because she doesn't believe you should make a profit on good health.

at one of their gas stations, they're selling gasoline at barely a penny over cost per gallon.

one man will sell your produce in his store and barely tacks on any profit.

they do, however, charge more for fresh eggs and their breads than the regular grocery - i cannot blame them, what with the cost of grains.

this non-economy is affecting everybody.
