Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

The Texas Supreme Court on Friday threw out a jury award over injuries a 17-year-old girl suffered in a church exorcism, ruling that the case unconstitutionally entangled the court in religious matters. Laura Schubert testified in 2002 that she was cut and bruised, pinned to the floor for hours and received carpet burns during an exorcism in 1996.

So some quack religion can injure and hurt one of their members by just saying they were literally "beating the devil out of him" and it's okay to do? The court erred here. The right to freely practice one's religion doesn't give church members the right to cause others bodily harm.

Texas?

Are we really surprised?

I'm with you on that Chris. They, like Jindal, should have been prosecuted for kidnapping, unlawful restraint, assault and battery. The Texas Supreme Court's been a joke for years. It appears they haven't changed.

Justice David Medina wrote that finding the church liable "would have an unconstitutional 'chilling effect' by compelling the church to abandon core principles of its religious beliefs."

What is wrong with that when the church is hurting people? If they practiced human sacrifice as a "core principle" who'd give a crap if prosecution of the church had a "chilling effect?"

Texas, nuff said!!! Is that fucking hell hole still a State??? It may be to late but can we give them back to Mexico??? Mexicans are to smart for that oh well......

Most Americans believe in the existence of God and the Devil, don't they? The supercilious fops, who deny the existence of God and the Devil, are claiming that their beliefs are more congruent with the objective reality of the physical world. There is some arrogance here. And based on their world view and beliefs would require that the beliefs of the majority of Americans be set aside.

Yet both groups seem to be in sufficient contact with reality to be able to go about their business, survive the exigencies of our existence, and even prosper. In practicality, the members of churches, who believe in a God who intervenes in human affairs, seem to do well.

Seems like if a Church started up in Texas and declared their Bible says to go Rob banks the Court system could not get involved cause the Church's core belief is Bank Robbery is Sanctioned by their Bible. What utter and complete BULLSHIT.

I'd like to know why these constitutional scholars didn't know they were being "unconstitutionally entangled" before they took the case.

Slow day on the bench boys?

Maybe they love being entangled. A secret Lawyer fetish perhaps??

How are you doing? Have you had a chance to explore or do any treasure
hunting on the back roads and hills of West Virigina this year? Any good finds?

I'm still in Florida and doing OK. Hows by you, my friend? Digital camera yet? Dog? New house?

I've been wondering how you're doing since your mother died but I didn't want to intrude. I expect that there have been some big changes in your life that you're trying to sort out.

I probably won't get away from Florida before the end of next month. Part of that is because I'm hoping gas prices come down at least a little bit. The other part is because I have to move sometime in the next few months myself and I'd like to get it set up in advance. The place where I live has been sold to developers and I never know when they're going to give the 30-day notice. I'd hate to be up north when that happens.

You have my e-mail. I'd like to know how you're coping if you feel like talking about it.

Doing okay, thanks for asking. Some days aren't so good but better than it was those first few weeks. Sometimes small reminders just seem to hit you out of nowhere when you least expect it but things get a little easier as time goes by.

Decided it's best not to get a dog until after I move and know where I'll be living. Had to take care of a lot paperwork before and but nowe need to start getting everything packed, this place sold, and find another place out of state. Too expensive here in CA. Not sure just where I'm moving just yet. Been checking out a few possibilities. It's just been some really major changes to have deal with in a relatively short time. I'd like to be moved and out of here before Christmas if I can.

Hey, I am ready to buy a digital now. I bought two cheap disposable digitals but it was worth the $20 each 'cause now I know what features I'd like to have when I lay out the bucks for real one. A digital under $200 and has a large screen on the back for viewing/deleting the photos right after you take the shot. Those disposable digitals have too small a viewing screen to really see the shot you've just taken.

I have to move sometime in the next few months myself and I'd like to get it set up in advance. The place where I live has been sold to developers and I never know when they're going to give the 30-day notice.

Do you have any idea where you plan to move? Was this your Mom's place in Florida or your own? I read there were a lot of places for sale in Florida so I imagine you won't have a hard time finding a new place. Were you going to buy or rent? Moving is the pits but it can get you out of a rut too. Sometimes it's good to make changes in your life whether you planned on them or not.

Okay, better not ramble on here.

I've been renting for the past 13 years ~ sort of. The nudist resort where I live now was owned by a good friend so I was living here on the barter system. Now that the "developers" have taken over (and are charging me rent) I really don't know when they're going to start clearing. I want to move into an apartment ASAP so I don't get boxed into a corner. I don't think I want to own another house, though. It's just too much work, property taxes and insurance that I don't want to deal with.

It seems like For Sale and For Rent signs are popping up on every other house, even in neighborhoods that I'd least expect. It looks like a lot of people got hung up with those high risk mortgages. I'm really shocked by what I'm seeing, not only out here on the edge of the Everglades but along the intercoastal as well.

I know the exact apartment I want and I'm trying to talk the current residents into letting me take over the lease. They want to move to Georgia but have to find jobs, etc. ~ it's a long story.

I'm glad to hear things are getting easier for you. It must feel strange to have so much free time on your hands.

Watch those pixels when you decide on a digital camera. Go high if you can. What looks clear on the LDC get's fuzzy when you print. I'm adraid you won't get much for $200 and you'll be disappointed in the long run. I still use my Pantex 35mm when I need a good clear shot to blow up.

Here's fine little camera for $150.

With the right software you can print 13x19 and it will be crisp.

I recommended the 570IS around Christmas. This has a 8MP sensor rather than the 7.1MP. Uses rechargeable AA (maha or panasonic best). Stabilized optics.

Derisive and dismissive, the acolytes of the advocates of atheism consider religious beliefs an atavism to be eradicated from society. But there are probably more believers in America today than at the time the Constitution and its Amendments were adopted.

Why are you condemnors of religious activity so focused on what you consider the aberrations of Christianity, the exorcists (which include the Catholic Church), the polygamous sects, the snake handlers, and others who act pursuant to their beliefs, while being reluctant to publicly deride practices of the Muslims, which are not only benighted, but whose beliefs are widespread and pervasive throughout Islam?

Is it because while Christians are willing to "suffer" for their beliefs, Islamics actively "kill others," who criticize their beliefs? Atheistic activity is so muted in Islam as to be non-existent. Preference for any other belief system while living under the aegis of Islam, carries burdens that the dhimmi knows.

Jesus loves you. Criticize Islam or the Prophet, and Muslims will issue fatwahs decreeing you should be killed. So atheists respond to Christian love, agape, with hatred and threats, while cowering and silent before the religion of death, Islam.

This is a great ruling!

If she didn't agree to be exorcised, she wouldn't have those problems. What TF did she think an exorcism entailed? Didn't she see the movie?

I think her real problems started long before the exorcism... probably around the time she joined the church I guess.

Now, if she had sued arguing that the exorcism was a failure, that would be a different, and more interesting story.

Is anyone really surprised? I mean this is the state that gave us Tom Delay and Bushlovertwo.

BL2, some help here. How can we dig Texas out of this little public-relations problem?

Johnson is a Moron.
Anyone who thinks that their fantasy of a sky god and his zombie son is enough to run a civiliazation has lost his friggin' marbles and deserves toget walked all over by Agenda-riddled Rich White Men.

here you go, Johnson. back at ya reinterpreted:

You see how easy it is, you religious brainwashed MORON.

Come on Dumpling. Tell us about your delusions. Or are you aware of them?

Believing doesn't make something true. Did you ever hear or see a God come down and correct a wrong? Do you believe in prayer also? The three possible answers to prayer are yes no and not now but somehow whatever the outcome it is always the will of God. I get the same results when I pray to my pet rock.

YEah, all the non-combatants killed, in a variety of technologically exciting, and christian approved, ways, such as white-phosphorous, cluster-bombs, 'precision' guided mega-bombs, helicopter gunships &c would surely agree with you.

If that's what you call "suffering in silence", I'd hate to see 'em when they get pissed off - imbecile.

And WTF is an 'Islamic' anyway? you tool.

YEah, all the non-combatants killed, in a variety of technologically exciting, and christian approved, ways, such as...

And they're probably the lucky ones (er well probably not those who got 'shaked n' baked' as some marines like to call the effects of slowly burning a persons skin off via white-phosphorous). Arguably the large amount of poor bastards being born with horrific deformities, or cancers &c, or those civilians who will be dying for pet-rock knows how many years due especially to DU - which is the major suspect at present in any case. And as the shit spreads round the world, it won't only be defenceless Iraquis or Afghanis who are effected.

Thanks so much for the links to the digital camera. I printed them out and it sounds like a great little camera. I want to find out first just how big the "preview viewer" (don't know just what the technical term is called) is on the back of the camera -- the viewer which shows you a preview of the photo you just took. I wanted to be able to see a clear (and fair sized) photo of the picture I've just taken to decide whether or not I want to delete it. I'll read thru the entire info about it later tonight.

This is crazy, but I just finished up the cd for the second disposable digitial camera but had somehow smeared my lipstick and couldn't see I'd done that in the small preview viewer on the disposable digital. How dumb, huh? So after I'd developed the cd I liked a couple of the photos but will now need to "photoshop" the stupid pictures and get the smeared lipstick off before I can send them out. Oh well. After I buy the digital camera the very next thing will be to download and learn how to use Photoshop! Thanks again for great your suggestion for the camera. Appreciated it.
