Early times (Creation to Solomon). Ostensibly the easiest period, as the Bible provides an unbroken male lineage from Adam through to Solomon complete with the ages of the individuals involved. However, not all of the versions of the Bible provide the same ages -- the Septuagint gives much longer ages, adding about 1500 years to the date of Creation. Ussher resolved this problem by relying on the Hebrew Bible instead.

Early Age of Kings (Solomon to the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and the Babylonian captivity). The lineage breaks down at this point, with only the length of the kings' reigns being provided and a number of overlaps and ambiguities complicating the picture. Ussher had to cross-reference the Biblical records with known dates of other people and rulers to create an overall timeline.

Late Age of Kings (Ezra and Nehemiah to the birth of Jesus). No information at all is provided in the Bible. Ussher and his counterparts therefore had to try to link a known event from this period with a dateable event in another culture, such as the Chaldeans, Persians or Romans. For instance, the death of the Chaldean King Nebuchadnezzar II (who conquered Jerusalem in 586 BC) could be correlated with the 37th year of the exile of Jehoiachin (in 2 Kings 25:27).

Using these methods, Ussher was able to establish an unadjusted Creation date of about 4000 BC.

No, troll, the bible does not specifically say the earth is 6000 years old. How could it? Nor is there a document that says I am 52 years old. However, there is one that says I was born in 1955 and from that it can be deduced that I am 52.

If the bible said, "Forthwith thou shalt know that the earth is of an age that equals 6000 years" then that would not be accurate the year after it was written, would it? Because 1 years later it would be 6001 years old and the passage would not be accurate.

Ussher deduced the age of the earth using largely biblical passages. If you had read my original post you would know that. But you did not -- you immediately went into troll mode.

Therefore, the biblical age of the Earth (using Scripture itself as a guide) is 6,000 years !! Mankind did not evolve 4 million years ago on an Earth which is 4.5 billion years old in a universe which was "big-banged" into existence 18-20 billion years in the distant past. Jesus Christ, the Creator Incarnate, said He made mankind male and female in the beginning (Mark 10:6), and that when the heavens and the earth were commanded into being (Gen 1:1), they "stood up together" (Isa 48:13) not billions of years apart !!

Who says it is the word of God? The stories of the bible are stolen stories from older, discarded religions. Genesis--the Garden of Eden--Adam and Eve--the Flood--the Tower of Babel----all stolen from older religions and the older stories make more sense.

Well, if you take all the ages and go through the generations of people dating back to Adam, who existed at the 'beginning of time' you will calculate the beginning of time.

You know, you can do the same thing. You could figure out when your great great great grandfather was born in a similar manner, or do you think such a feat of modern mathematics is impossible? As long as you know who begat who and how old they were, you'll have a pretty good idea of the time period.

His religious radio empire does good work in speaking up about Christian values, but Dobson and his empire ought to stay away from politics or risk losing the empire's tax-exempt status. Sure there will be the Coors', Koch's, Scaifes' and Devos' family's billions to contribute to Dobson's empire even without the tax windfall, but when a huge religious organization like Dobson's crosses the line, they should be the first to lose their tax exempt status.
