Here we go.......

a new dedicated web server

Woo Hoo! Techno marvels abound here at the DR.

There may be some downtime on Saturday and Sunday

Famous last words.

Well, good luck with all that.

Spud would offer to help out here but unfortunately Spud hurt his back the other week helping a buddy move another server, up three flights of stairs it was.

Now Spud refuses to help out people who need to move either their servers or their roll out couches.

Just won't do it.

Be Well.

Spud, a friend is a person who helps you move ....... a body/

Are you sure it was a server?

Downtime? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
!!!

We need assurances that no Gerbils will be harmed as a result of this move.

Not unless some of our closeted right wing loons get ahold of them.

Normally I oppose fixin' what ain't broke. But judging from the DR's slow response time, which has made me double post on many occasions, it's broke. See you Monday? herm

Speaking of double posts.

Spud, a friend is a person who helps you move ....... a body/

Are you sure it was a server?

Hmmm, is good question.

Do servers kick?

Do they drip?

Are they traditionally carried inside of a duffle bag?

Okaaaay, now that Spud thinks about it maybe that was a body!

Fer helping buddy move a body buddy only buys Spud a sixpack of domestic beer?

Wotta cheapskate thinks Spud.

Body removal services dictate at least a decent micro-brew or Stella Artois or sommat nice at least.

Be Well.

"Page Cannot Be Displayed"

Ah luvs me sum techno-nologys.

Spud timed out waiting fer the Twitter page as well.

Hardly an auspicious start.

"with type interface and the Fortran language..."

Ooooh! Retro futurism is kewl!

A musical tribute to an Old Server

RIP Old Server.

Be Well.

Yeah for upgrades! They are how I make my living!

Cleaning up after upgrades are so much fun. Two steps forward one step back!

Be kind to the gerbils... Woobie Pooper Scooper needs em to clean his pipes!

Good Luck Rcade... if you needs a techno geek you have my contact info...I would be glad help and to snicker appropriately!

Twitter's got its own gerbil problems.

Roy-that pic was hilarious, especially the caption. But I wish my Dell came with twin chrome steering wheels to better navigate the interweb...

And it doesn't like diehard Clinton supporters like Corko.

Perhaps it likes die hard gerbil abusers like Prisoner # 2586 better?

........geez......hope Vern sees this post......

......otherwise he's going to spend the weekend re-booting his nintendo 640..........

Vern:

"...what the fuck is wrong with this piece of shit.....if only Clinton and Pelosi didn't tax me to death I could'ave bought a Mac........Oh Jesus...please grant my Lord Bush another term....so those tax cuts will finally trickle down to my trailer park and I can buy a new Mac "....

We're being thrown off DR cold turkey all weekend?

I can see the DR downtime now -- some here with sweat on their brow, the shakes, the anxious pacing around the room, furtive glances at their monitor every ten minutes...waiting, waiting, waiting.

Hey Rodgers,

Can we get some specs on the new gerbil machine?

Rcade is lying. He just wants you fucking losers to get out for some fresh air on the weekend.

Chances are Northgay will see his enormous shadow and immediately run back in the house.
Dethpud will open the door only to hear the ankle monitor beep.
herm will most likely break a hip after tripping over the cats. Don't worry, all of the old styrofoam McDonalds containers and newspapers laying about the floor will break his fall.
frank55 will more than likely lock himself out of the house never to be heard from again.
donnerboy will trip up the basement stairs and break both of his dick beaters.

Hey! Ads by Google! Yes, YOU!

We're talkin' gerbils here, and you fail - totally - to serve up any ads for Richard Gere movies.

What good are you?

Holy shit! Now most of you shut ins will get to find out about this "sunshine" that you hear about.

I'll pray for y'all.

FF...101!

for those interested, the picture in roy batty's post, i13.photobucket.com is a picture of the 3 panels in the engine room maneuvering area of a nuclear submarine. from left to right, the steam plant control panel (spcp), reactor plant control panel (rpcp), and electric plant control panel (epcp).
NG3- those two chrome steering wheels are the astern (small) and ahead (large) throttle handwheels.
i proud to have sat watch on each of the three, although they're far nore intimidating with all their lights flashing and horns blowing.

nore = more

No DR for the weekend OMG OhNos

as Spud would say 0bligatory

LOL, FF!

There will be a short ceremony for the retirement of the outgoing Gerbil(s). This just a thank you and happy retirement. Only immediate Board Members and family have been invited.

Following the full installation of the new equipment, There will be an installation ceremony for the new group of Gerbils.

It is expected of all members of the DR to welcome the new workers of magic and electronic wizardry. Just a note will do.

It seems to be moving pretty fast now.

Aye loves that "Computer 1950 Future.JPG"

Went to work in an EAM shop in 1952 (helping to make un-employment checks with 80 column punch card machines).

One noon hour a co-worker fed several hundred cards into a tabulating machine without taking any out (while he was eating his lunch the cards were balling up inside).

First comment on the new server goes to Zat:

www.drudge.com

How nice.

Thanks for the space, Rogers.

People will filter in over the next 24-48 hours as their ISP gets the new IP address for the Retort. If you got a broken site with no headlines, that was the old server.

It's alive! It's alive! It's alive!

Wahoo!

Souldn't the Title have been "New Server ALIVE" instead of Live?? Just curious

Larry

The phrase "It's alive!.." was immortalized in the original Frankenstein movie.

I believe "alive" has an animal context as in "he is alive." "Live" in this case refers to electrical circuitry as in live wire. To live implies life.

They live and grow and we get to make fools of ourselves in our usual manor. "R" just how many little buddies have you got powering this piece of technology?

You have to realize that we have gone from a part time and elderly rodent to a full time multi-gerbil piece of modern technology. Shows just what a few transistors, resistors and misl, electronic junk will do.

All of that horsepower and all you have is 250GB of space?

The hardware nerd in me wants to ask if you have multiple SAS drives in RAID or a couple 250GB SATA drives in RAID0+1

Testing.

Actually, I misread. The server has 500GB of hard disk space -- two 250GB Western Digital SATA2:7200RPM drives.

It seems to be pretty fast.

2 Dell gerbils, dude, we're getting a good server, lol!

I've been surfing around a little and it's definitely faster.

That's what I noticed Ax. I have 500 Gig in my desktop. How do you store 3-4 years of threads? Compressing HTML doesn't save much space.

Actually, I misread.

Smart shopper...

So, since I'm a non-techie, explain to me --

Does this new 500 GB stuff now mean we have the room to post pictures in the middle of a thread instead of having to provide a link to them. Kind of like they do at Free Republic and some of the other blogs?

I can tell even on my old Dell 4600 the speed has really picked up.
Now I can now insult people on here twice as fast as I did before.

That wouldn't be why we didn't post threads before.

If you hotlink (use someone elses bandwidth to post a picture) you're not going to use any of Rcade's space to store the image. If you host the image on your own web space/image hosting service, the same applies. I think it probably has to do with his own bandwidth usage or you just can't trust some assholes not to post porn.

And he doesn't have time to spend all day moderating threads.

I built a file server for home use a few weeks back because the new 2 platter 640GB drives from Western Digital were on sale for 99 bucks + free shipping at newegg. I don't really understand why people skimp on storage space these days...unless it has to do with either building a quiet pc or size constraints.

I can't remember if Rcade has ever answered this question...I want to say he has, but i'm not sure. I think Rcade has someone else do the physical hosting, so he wouldn't need to purchase any hardware anyway. If he needs more disk space, they just bump his quota.

Normally I oppose fixin' what ain't broke. But judging from the DR's slow response time, which has made me double post on many occasions, it's broke. See you Monday? herm

That likely has little to do with the physical machine. It's more likely an issue with your connection to your isp or congestion on the net. It takes relatively little processing power to serve web pages. That's why there will be multiple websites running on the same physical hardware.

How do you store 3-4 years of threads? Compressing HTML doesn't save much space.

Blog entries and comments are stored in a MySQL database that's around 700 megabytes in size.

I think Rcade has someone else do the physical hosting, so he wouldn't need to purchase any hardware anyway.

Yup. I'm using The Planet in Dallas.

Yup. I'm using The Planet in Dallas.

Ah yes. I remember now.

My friend from Wiley and I hosted our first few Half Life/Team Fortress Classic boxes there.

Good goin' mate.
See you soon dude.

Rcade

I really like the way you have it set up to write userblogs with the word counter
and everything. Works great.

New Server Double Live at Buddokon!

Check it out!...

Wot hath the blog-god wrought?

...a dual-processor Dell PowerEdge with 4 gigabytes of memory and 250 gigabytes of hard disk space.

Is kinda like a team of uber-Gerbils all on gamma-steroids and Red Bull!

Wicket.

Ha! Change is good.

Be Well.

I take it this is a thread where we all show suplication toward Rcade? I'm new to these customs. Please enlighten me to local dictates.

Ask a silly question...

Okay, here's wotcha do...

Start with a burnt offering.

Usually, you burn a Guy Fawkes-like effigy that resembles mAnn Colt-face or Lush Rimjob. Unless, of course, the real thing is handy.

Then you purchase a whack of Digital Gerbil Kibble and Fed-Ex it to Fla where the blog-god do reside to garner the blessing of the DR Gerbil.

Then you must repeat the blog-gods name in a gregorian typa chant over and over again, one hundred times in a row.

*Nota Bene* (If you start giggling you hafta start all over again from the beginning.)

Then you put a finger on the top of yer head and twirl around in a circle incessantly all the while going while going "Nyuk, Nyuk, Nyuk" in yer best Curly voice.

Rcade really gets a giggle out of that oart fer some reason.

Silly? Yes.

The ways of a blog-god are myriad and strange and mostly undecipherable to lesser mortals.

Finish up with a cheer...

The Server is Dead.

Long Live the Server.

Be Well.

/Really gone now
//Promise.

as long as i don't have to go hyperspacelike - it messes my tresses up!

Hey just an idear. Is it possible to put a counter upon the posting doomaflatchy thingymajigger. You know the thing I am typing on now?? Or is that not possible?? Just curious.

Larry

much faster Rcade...kudos!

Blog entries and comments are stored in a MySQL database that's around 700 megabytes in size.

Only 700 meg? Nice. Good link on your blog provider RCADE....

I never really saw a slow site, but I guess it's better. For those that are still using 56K, I guess this is a boon..

So far so good, and like Rasta said, much faster.

...Rcade.......new server is very good......

Methinks the nooner got lost on the move over to the new server.

Thanks. Fixed. We have Nooner.

Like greased lightening. With some wd-40 thrown in. Scary fast.

Never really noticed earlier but hot damn this is one speedy site now.

Be Well.
