Does this new 500 GB stuff now mean we have the room to post pictures in the middle of a thread instead of having to provide a link to them. Kind of like they do at Free Republic and some of the other blogs?
That wouldn't be why we didn't post threads before.
If you hotlink (use someone elses bandwidth to post a picture) you're not going to use any of Rcade's space to store the image. If you host the image on your own web space/image hosting service, the same applies. I think it probably has to do with his own bandwidth usage or you just can't trust some assholes not to post porn.
And he doesn't have time to spend all day moderating threads.
That's what I noticed Ax. I have 500 Gig in my desktop. How do you store 3-4 years of threads? Compressing HTML doesn't save much space.
I built a file server for home use a few weeks back because the new 2 platter 640GB drives from Western Digital were on sale for 99 bucks + free shipping at newegg. I don't really understand why people skimp on storage space these days...unless it has to do with either building a quiet pc or size constraints.
I can't remember if Rcade has ever answered this question...I want to say he has, but i'm not sure. I think Rcade has someone else do the physical hosting, so he wouldn't need to purchase any hardware anyway. If he needs more disk space, they just bump his quota.
Normally I oppose fixin' what ain't broke. But judging from the DR's slow response time, which has made me double post on many occasions, it's broke. See you Monday? herm
That likely has little to do with the physical machine. It's more likely an issue with your connection to your isp or congestion on the net. It takes relatively little processing power to serve web pages. That's why there will be multiple websites running on the same physical hardware.
