Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader accused Sen. Barack Obama, the presumed Democratic Party nominee, of downplaying poverty issues, trying to "talk white" and appealing to "white guilt" during his run for the White House.

Ralph Needs Another Damned Ego Reboosting is a useless pile anymore. So what's talking white anyways?? What a shmuck.

Nader's correct.

That's why ties to militancy or radicalism will doom Obama with many whites... whites who want to feel good about themselves by supporting a black guy but who are afraid of/turned off by confrontational blacks.

Same holds true for liberals - they'd support a black candidate - but only the right kind. Conservative blacks need not apply.

Having an education and speaking well does not equal "talking white".

Ignorant uneducated speech is not a culture. nor is it somehow more "real" than going to college.

Thomas is called an uncle tom not because he speaks well, but because he wants to close down affirmative action.(after using it, of course) He's a typical republican hardliner in that respect. "I got mine".

But I don't agree that calling him an uncle tom is the right thing to do. Why bring race into it? He's just an insecure hypocritical asshole.

Same advice for Nader: Don't bring race into it. If you think Obama is just an establishment candidate, than say that. Your message will be lost among most people when you use racial terms.

PS- Nader also isn't a racist. He's an arrogant jerk.

Same holds true for conservatives--they'd support a black candidate--but only the right kind. Liberal blacks need not apply.

Nader's correct

Ah, so you think the next president should speak more about the poor in this country, and set up more laws to defend them?

Well...I whole heartedly agree.

(didn't read the article, did you, oohrah?)

Same holds true for conservatives--they'd support a black candidate--but only the right kind. Liberal blacks need not apply.

How profound. I'll bet the liberals don't want a conservative black to apply either. Gee, what a surprise. Any other earth shaking revelations you'd like to share with us, bOoB?

ALEX-
I don't think you can remove race from the equation. Obama's an educated & smooth talker - granted - but if he were white he'd be just another lib pol. His niche is that he's the first mainstream black presidential candidate who isn't a race baiter. Biden was correct. He's clean, articulate.

Unlike demagogues like Jackson, Sharpton, etc... Obama's appeal is that he combines good policy, good looks/speaking, and satisfies America's white guilt by being black.

That appeal crumbles if he's linked too closely to militants. That's why Rev Wright, et all, are critical in determining whether enough mainstream whites will ultimately feel comfortable with Obama.

So a Guy who tells it ike it is Rev Wright is ow a Militant ehhhhhhhhh funny dat Be.

"Ah, so you think the next president should speak more about the poor in this country, and set up more laws to defend them?" - ALEX

You missed my point ALEX. My two posts pretty much sum it up. I'm not talking about details of specific policies/certain laws, etc. I'm talking about whites' perception of Obama... and how whites would welcome a non-threatening black, but who would reject another threatening black in the mold of Jackson, Sharpton.

LAR-
Yes, he would be perceived as militant by most all of those who aren't apologists for anything and everything Obama. If you think he's benign you have a tin ear for politics. Wright is radioactive. Nucular, as your favorite POTUS might say.

By the same token white candidates who might be tied to militant speakers/groups runs a great risk of being lumped in with that group... even if they (like Obama) distance themselves as best they can.

Perception becomes reality. Imagery is very powerful. Truth can be lost in the mix. Such is the state of US politics.

Yo he be talkin white an shit, nom sane?

A thank you letter from Barack Obama:

My fellow Americans:

As your future President I want to thank my supporters, for your mindless support of me, despite my complete lack of any legislative achievement, my pastor's relations with Louis Farrakhan and Libyan dictator Moamar Quadafi, or my blatantly leftist voting record while I present myself as some sort of bi-partisan agent of change.

I also like how my supporters claim my youthful drug use and criminal behavior somehow qualifies me for the Presidency after 8 years of claiming Bush's youthful drinking disqualifies him. Your hypocrisy is a beacon of hope shining over a sea of political posing.

I would also like to thank the Kennedy's for coming out in support of me. There's a lot of glamour behind the Kennedy name, even though JFK started the Vietnam War, his brother Robert illegally wiretapped Martin Luther King, Jr. And Teddy killed a female employee with whom he was having an extra marital affair and who was pregnant with his child. And I'm not going anywhere near the cousins, both literally and figuratively.

And I'd like to thank Oprah Winfrey for her support. Her love of meaningless empty platitudes will be the force that propels me to the White House.

Americans should vote for me, not because of my lack of experience or achievement, but because I make people feel good. Voting for me causes some white folk to feel relieved of their imagined, racist guilt.

I say things that sound meaningful, but don't really mean anything because Americans are tired of things having meaning. If things have meaning, then that means you have to think about them.

Americans are tired of thinking. It's time to shut down the brain, and open up the heart. So when you go to vote, remember, don't think, just do. And do it for me.

Thank You,
Barack Hussein Obama, Jr.

That's your perception, LAR.

Nah OohRah I use facts with regards to Iraq. I know the score.

Larry Mohr

and how whites would welcome a non-threatening black, but who would reject another threatening black in the mold of Jackson, Sharpton.

I reject those people because they're extremist pricks. Color has nothing to do with it in my mind.

Maybe it does in yours. If so, my apologies.

ALEX -
Nice try at a backhanded slap. No need to be snarky.

Serious questions: What is it that makes them extremist? Is it their policies? IMO, their policies are mainstream liberalism.

Rather, is it their personality which makes them extremist? How are you defining that? Is it their association with extremist groups? What?

Are there any white liberal politician who'd fit your profile of an extremist prick? What leads you to label them that way?

My point with regard to Obama is that (outside of the recent Wright and other militant association revelations) Obama has been the first black serious candidate who doesn't pattern himself as another Jackson/Sharpton. If he did pattern himself that way, neither you nor I would vote for him. Me, because he's just another lib... you, because of him being an extremist prick however you define it.

So, by not being an extremist/militant... Obama looks to appeal to a white population which feels guilty about its racists history and wants to feel good about themselves. Still, white America must receive assurances he's not a Jackson in disguise. And that's why Wright is radioactive for Obama. If he's linked with extremism he's toast - images of black militantism remain in the minds of many voters.

Its really sad that the first time Nader enters into the conversation on this site, apart from blaming him for '00 and '04, is for this.

I'm sure that nobody here has any "white guilt," of course, but that doesn't take away from the point he's trying to make, albeit with a sledgehammer approach.

And I don't think Obama is trying to "talk white." That's just the way he speaks. But that doesn't mean that if he didn't speak that way, if he spoke in a more sterotypically black fashion, that he'd have a snowball's chance in hell in this race. We may be ready for a black president, as a nation, but we're only ready for a certain type of black president, don't kid yourselves.

Boat rockers need not apply.... even if that boat is on solid ground. That goes for candidates of any color from either major party.

I would vote for John Rocker before I voted for a black muslim

"I would vote for John Rocker before I voted for a black muslim"

When do you actually get to cast a vote, tough guy? The 2016 presidential election?

i wonder how blind people feel about this?

I still can't figure out why the Democrats are running a candidate that make AL Sharpton seem Presidential.

That reminds me... what was that film? Hollywood Shuffle, maybe? Darkly (ahem) funny movie about a black actor going to school to learn black dialect so he could get parts in Hollywood.

"white guilt"?

Ralph Nader is repeating reich wing talking points now?

Whoa, the dude has totally flipped his lid.

Bob Barr will draw more votes than Ralph in Nov.

It's actually really sad to see wot Nader's ego has reduced him to.

Be Well.

Which type? An itelligent, educated one? Too bad that wasn't a qualification for our last white president.

hagbard - i love townsend's line:

"did you eat the guvuhnment cheese, fawthuh?"

"I've fallen into irrelevancy and I can't get up."

Having an education and speaking well does not equal "talking white".

So how does all this equate to how Lil Bush speaks?

Infuckingcredible. Someone raises himself up above his circumstances, betters himself through his own hard work and he is criticised for not talking black enough.

Any more fucking racist shit to throw there Ralphie?

Is Obama a Jr.?

Thanks for the posts Oohrah---when I heard this story and Nader--I have to admit it went over my head.

I am fortunate that my parents raised us without prejudice towards blacks or anyone for that matter.

So for the white guilt stuff--I don't feel any. My ancestors were not here until 1895 and the Irish had our own problems with prejudice.

And the comment about he "talks white"--well--Obama doesn't talk like Sharpton or Jackson, but he panders to the Class Warfare much better than anyone to come down the pike in decades.

Seems that Nader is trying to get some headlines since the MSM is not talking to him or covering his campaign at all.

And Spud--it has been the Dems party and HRC to drop the race card--not the Repubs.

Shoot--everything to Obama is a distraction--his pastor, his friends, his wife, his flip flopping on everything from public campaign financing, the the war funding, to the SCOTUS gun decision, to foreign policy.

He's a regular secret hypocrite.

by Nader's definition, "talking white" means telling the white power structure what they want to hear rather than what they need to hear. That he's a regular status quo Democrat and nothing more. Just figured everyone would want to know.
