The contractor is a good friend of mine, though, and has said for years that only immigrants will do this kind of work here. They do an excellent job and appreciate the opportunity.

The local Builder's Association even offers free training and a stipend to anyone who wants to become a carpenter or brick layer. After 7 years there have been no takers.

They'll finish today, and in an hour I will go get a liter of tequilla and some beer to show my personal appreciation. It's a hot, hard day here, and since all they eat is tortillas and beans I believe they send most of the money home to support their families.

(In that paradise where Pachovilla lives, in his air conditioned hacienda, oblivious to the misery he causes just beyond his door.)
