An aide to Iowa Gov. Chet Culver said that Republican presidential candidate John McCain ignored the governor's request to cancel a campaign visit. "As a courtesy -- and as we did for Senator Obama -- we privately made an effort to make sure that Senator McCain knew that state and local resources were still being deployed to support the flood fight and that now may not be the best time for a campaign trip," Patrick Dillon said in a statement.

What, exactly, would McSame do knee-deep in Iowan floodwaters? Tell the good burgers what a heckuva job his people did in Louisiana? herm

Damn the recovery effort! Full photo op ahead!

Damn the recovery effort! Full photo op ahead!

I stand by this man. I stand by this man, because he stands for things. Not only for things, he stands on things, things like aircraft carriers and rubble and recently flooded city squares. And that sends a strong message, that no matter what happens to America, she will always rebound with the most powerfully staged photo-ops in the world.

(I know the above quote is in reference to GWB. Still seemed appropriate!)

Cindy probably asked him to swing through and see if there were any drugstores he could loot for her.

We should all be grateful he didn't mistake any flooded fields with rice paddies and start spilling military secrets to the Iowanese.

BWAHAHAHAH Northguy3 Too fucking funny.

Wow, some people will jump on the opponents for anything. McCain was "damned if he did and damned if he didn't" because the Obamabots would have simply said that he did not care if he did not visit. Personally, I am hoping for a levy breach in East St. Louis - that town needs to be wiped off the face of the earth and the garbage that lives there needs to move on and learn to live something other than a life of crime and handouts. I just wish that the flood waters could have been diverted to Gary, Indiana...

What difference does it make? McSame probably can't even find Iowa.

"...and as we did for Senator Obama "

Do you guys even read the article?

John McCain ignored the governor's request to cancel a campaign visit

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama canceled a scheduled visit to eastern Iowa last week at the request of state officials.

Apparently better than you did, elsquid

McSame won't be convicted of common decency.

... nor of having any class.

NG3 - sorry, yes I missed the word ignored - thought it said something in the affirmative. Nice name calling though -

Nice to see you feel that way about your fellow Americans. If a member of your family isn't living up to your expectations, do you help them or make sure they're "wiped off the face of the earth"?

David Roederer, who chairs McCain's campaign in Iowa, said McCain's trip didn't hamper Iowa's recovery operation. He said McCain proceeded with the visit because the campaign was providing much of its own security.

"There was really no state resources diverted," Roederer said.
As long as they had their own security, who gives a shit. Free country.
Dillon's comments came as President Bush toured the state, and hundreds of law enforcement officers were diverted from flood recovery to provide security for him.
Bush's stop was the real headache.

Freako C-In fairness Bush also caused headaches when he finally got around to going to NO. Hundreds of rescuers and first responders being pulled off the job just to make a nice background for Bush's photo op...

I'm a lib now?

LOL

Dude, I saw Bush "in action" on local television last night (I'm from Iowa). He got up, said some things, and did some nothing. He didn't see anything he couldn't have seen on T.V. He diverted resources for nothing.

If all he did was circle around in a plane, I would have been fine with that.

Also, you're a douche.

"Also, you're a douche."

Not likely, but in case anyone wonders on who I was calling a douche, it was most assuredly Fredo_C (very obviously).

elsquid-you bitch people out for "not reading the article" while slamming Obama, then you get busted and claim you didn't see the most important word in the first sentence and got zero understanding from the context of the article you claim to have read and get whiny about being called a name?

Is McSame paying you by the word or the post? either way, he`s wasting Cindy's money.

I love the DR. Someone appologizes for misreading the article and ... yes is crucified. Did you call out BO for claiming there were 57 states and call him a nasty name too or is that just reserved for people with different opinions than your own? Not whining by the way - I thought I was being a smart a$$.

The mayor of the town he went to said it didn't affect the recovery effort...

Unless they expect everything cleaned up by January, and no further help needed, why wouldn't you want the potential next president seeing the damage first hand?

Because Rob they would just be in the way of the clean up recovery effort. Ittakes manpower away from these critical functions so they can provide security to John McCain. I see common sense is lackng on the right wingers side.

Larry Mohr

While I don't think any candidate needs to be diverting resources from recovery efforts, it seems to me like it might be a nice idea to go and help, without putting any P.R. spin on it. Like that's going to happen.

Like most people, I was really pissed at the Feds' response to Katrina. But I was more appalled that the Dems didn't send in a team to do what the Chimp in Charge couldn't or wouldn't. It would have done this country more good to see Democratic Congresspeople and staffers passing out water, ice and food.

Both sides were equally culpable in Katrina; instead of getting off their generously upholstered asses and actually doing something, everybody stayed in Washington and bumped their gums while people were trapped in Hell.

ElCid,

The DR is truly not for the faint of heart.

I actually have a big heart! I enjoy banter - personal attacks serve no purpose in arguments over issues however. Attacking the personalities of the candidates is something else of course - comes with the territory - I would not take an insult or name calling personally from random posters anyway - I don't know them, they don't know me. I do take offense to people with different opinions from my own - remember I am a con!

Iowa doesn't need the Chimp in Charge, they need the National Guard Troops back from Iraq!!!!
But Bush is too busy killing them there so they can't help us out here!
Isn't that the talking points these days???

Perhaps Cindy wants to reassure the Iowans that "this has worked out pretty well for them"...

Because Rob they would just be in the way of the clean up recovery effort.

And the mayor of the town he went to said that didn't happen, so you are wrong... again.

www.msnbc.msn.com

"There was really no state resources diverted," Roederer said.

The mayor of Columbus Junction, Dan Wilson, agreed.

"Certainly, Mr. McCain's visit today in no way hindered any relief efforts or any of our efforts on recovery or security or whatever we were working on," Wilson said.

Does it ever get old being so wrong all the time?

Why don't You get a fucking clue someday Rob. the Governor of the State is in charge of the State. If He says some Political figure should not come in then that Political figure should not come in. For You see a Governor is the CIC after all. Get a clue next time Rob. It might help You down the road.

Larry Mohr

Larry, the mayor of the town he went to said nothing was diverted... He's the mayor of the fucking town, I think he would know if a politician coming to his town, diverted relief efforts from his town...

The governor was worried that a presidential candidate would hamper relief efforts... a legit worry, but it didn't, so all is well...

Non issue.

Doesn't matter what the Mayor said it was upto the Governor of the State. Jesus don't You have a clue?? Bet You would be lambasting Obama is He had done this.

Larry Mohr

"Non issue."

Here's the point. Maybe it turned out (at least according to the mayor) that there was no problem. But that is after the fact. Why did he think it was OK to ignore the request of the Governor? Because the photo op was more important is the only reason I can come up with.

Obama likely wouldn't have diverted any resources either, had he gone. But he chose to honor the request of the Governor.

Who actually showed more respect for the victims?

Doesn't matter what the Mayor said it was upto the Governor of the State.

Its up to the governor to say whether resources were diverted, even though they weren't.

I understand the mayors concern, but his concerns were unwarranted... McCain's trip had no effect on relief efforts.

governors, not mayors concern

Why did he think it was OK to ignore the request of the Governor?

Obviously this is just a guess, but I would bet after the request they adjusted plans to ensure that no resources or personnel would be diverted. Because if it got out they were requested not to be there, and they pulled away officers or blocked roads used for rescue/relief, he could pretty much kiss Iowa goodbye.

Who actually showed more respect for the victims?

Posted by SanAntonioRogue

Did you mean who showed more respect for the Governor, because what McCain did had no effect on the citizens of Iowa. And if McCain did adjust his plans to make sure nothing would be affected, then he too was giving the mayor the respect he deserved.

A governor can't tell someone not to come to a state... you can go where ever you want in this country.

"A governor can't tell someone not to come to a state... "

Actually they can during a state of emergency.

"because what McCain did had no effect on the citizens"

Yes, it turned out that way. So basically you're saying "no harm, no foul".

That's sort of like saying it was OK for Michael Jackson to dangle his baby over a hotel balcony since the baby didn't end up getting hurt.

A governor can surely ASK a vote-seeker not to come.

A politico with a gram of compassion would take the hint. herm

A Governor is Commander in Chief of His or Her state. When a Natural or other state of Emergency occurs They can demand certain things and should be listened to.

Take a ride out to area 51, and report your progress. There are a LOT of places you can't go in this country.

They can demand certain things and should be listened to.

If he actually did demand it, maybe McCain would have listened. He asked because he was afraid of diverting resources... McCain went, and didn't divert resources.

If the governor knew McCain wouldn't divert any resources, do you think he would have made the request and why?

Where's Cindy McCain in all this. She's consorting with Vietnam. She could be in Iowa helping fill sand bags. Then I'd have some more respect for her.

Holy Shit....when did Rob the A Hole turn into such an apologist for McCain? Bottom line is that you have no idea whether resources were diverted, all you have is the word of a mayor saying he didnt divert resources. You dont know whether clean-up operations were slowed by having McCain and secret service come through for a photo op. Its really unbecoming of you to be posting with your nose up McCain's ass - you're much more entertaining when you are telling people to play with their cunt.
