Barely...

Great game.

Question for all you duffers out there --

Why was the 7th hole picked as the one to be played in the "sudden death" round?

Barely? He's playing on a bum knee! "Barely" or not, the greatest to ever play the game proves it yet again.

Golf.... Zzzzz...

So the golfer said, after missing a two foot putt: "Wow-- I've never played this badly before."
And the caddie said, "Wow-- I didn't realize that you had played before."

That's gotta be one of the best golf tournaments I've seen on TV

"That's gotta be one of the best golf tournaments I've seen on TV"

Yeah. It rivals the great "Smails-Noonan" tournament of '80.

Let us know when you win the Master's.

AU - I agree, I was glued to the live stream on the USGA site for most of the afternoon (I think I picked it up at the 12th hole). I never thought the game of golf could actually be exciting but it turned out to be a real nail-biter. He truly is the most incredible athlete, doing this so soon after knee surgery.

usually its all about tv....on a normal tournament there may or maynot be tv cameras as far back as 7 but since this is the open, they show each and every hole and I guess that the 7th tee was easy to get to from 18......it must wind around so that they arent that far away but again.....usually there is little if any tv that soon into the round..........

and what a great match......and I was going to scream if rocco had won and they spent more time on tiger than rocco which is what USUALLY happens on those RARE occasions when tiger doesnt win.

but rocco can be really proud of what he did.
I THINK TIGER will beceome the best golfer of all time.....and this journyman from penn looked him in the eye and DIDNT BLINK...........good work rocco
and tiger?????/well he was tiger and if you counted him out when rocco went ahead of him, you made a miscalculation..........tiger.
..YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!

That sucks. Rocco would have been the oldest golfer to EVER win a major! And the only golfer ranked below 100 (159) to have done so. Oh well, he had a better chance at sudden death, done same day, then to go against the best golfer ever in 18....

"He missed it by THAT MUCH"...Maxwell Smart.

"Rocco would have been the oldest golfer to EVER win a major! "

He's the oldest one to get that close.

How long until Nicklaus is eclipsed?

he lost the tournament yesterday when he hit that great shot and missed a relativly short putt....
but he didnt give up.......and he also shows that you dont have to be like a statue on the course. in our game if you have a thin skin or are bothered by little gotchas here and there, you are in the wrong game because we have fun.
AND WE DONT PLAY SLOW..

which will bring up another problem. this weekend there will be HACKERS all over our course going through tigers routine before they putt and miss and putt and miss and putt because THEY SAW TIGER DO IT.........

I believe he would have been the oldest to win THE OPEN.....I think that jack was 46 when he won the masters that year........I think.....
and it really doesnt matter does it......
THERE IS HOPE FOR US OLD FUCKS YET>........

Woods is no man, he is a punk. unless you approve of throwing clubs.

The 7th was picked so woods would win.

Zat

How long until Nicklaus is eclipsed?

I think this win now puts Tiger Woods four short of Nicklaus' record.

Wait a minute 45 is old?

You don't know what a man is.

Judge Smails

FUCK tiger woods

oh please........in this case the usga would have loved to have rocco as the open champion.....westwood or another non american.....then maybe since they had won the previous three opens.......

woods is a punk

Bush, do you even golf?

"FUCK tiger woods"

Unless you're his incredibly hot wife, I don't think that's going to happen.

I mostly hate golf courses for what they have done to the reefs in Hawaii and similar effects elsewhere, and I used to dive water hazards to pay for the air in my tanks just so I could SCUBA at all, but watching anyone that good at anything is really cool.

he can really throw a club

Let it go, George. Big fucking deal - he threw a club once during the tourney. Fuck Nascar driver's throw their helmets at eachother, football players spit at eachother, baseball players throw their bats and kick dirt on the umps, basketball players whine about every call ever made, hockey players beat the crap out of eachother. What's the big deal with throwing a stupid golf club? Get over it.

Translation: We may see it happen.

We may not.

My father was a great golfer.
He also shot artillery in North Africa, Italy and Korea.

I played in the 80's by 2nd grade but it was BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING.

My son likes it.

Goatmam(sic)=shit...

My father died 12 years before my son was born.

When my son was seven or so he would go with my mother to play golf.

She was president of the Old Folks Golf Assn in Austin, whatever it was formally called.

He still has the tiny putter a local pro made for him as a boy; And his grandmother's St Andrews towel is on his golf bag.

Personally I still think it's a great way to ruin a good walk.

But watching anyone as good as Tiger transcends the particular sport.

The more unexpected delight is watching Tiger's latest competition have the best day of his career.

What about on the back nine?

This is what the Olympics should be about.

China is arguably one of the the oldest continuous cultures on the planet.

We really need to figure out how to stop squandering our resources on ways to kill each other.

(Like that will help.)

Why do they call 10 through 18 the back nine when You have to advance to play on them?? That is about as bad as calling shorts a PAIR of shorts when there is only 1 of them. Crazy shit I tell You.

40 or less.

My father taught gunnery at Ft Bliss.

Sorry but Tiger's bad knee is a non-story hyped by the announcers. Brian Malone of the Penguins played a hockey game with a freshly broken nose...he missed 25 minutes.

Tiger was paying a 45 year old who played last season with a minor medical exemption due to his bad back (which he had surgery on and almost ended his career).

And he beat him by 1.

After 19 extra holes.

Tiger has done nothing but play gold since he could walk. His father ground it in to him.

When he does something worthwhile I will cheer for him.

Until then he just a really good golfer who the media plays up to the sheeple while passing over other good players.

Yes, he wins a lot...yes, that is all he does.

Plays golf.

A game where you can't even take a picture while the "action" is going on. And there is no one trying to stop you.

He's a golfer...not an athlete.

wasn't jack nicklaus 46 when he won his final major ?

"He's a golfer...not an athlete."

As soon as you can beat him let us know.

In the mean time you're just a shitstain, not a human.

I dunno.

I'm not a golf freak at all; Boooooring.

But I suspect the ultimate bar will be raised in this sport unless that hot wife fucks Tiger to death.

Last time I checked vigorous fucking was GREAT for the cardiovascular system.

Oh I'm sure that should be how he is judged then! He can beat me at golf!

He could probably beat a lot of scientist and doctors too!

So let's all rave about how wonderufl and "courageous" he is!

He had a knee scoped for the second time.

He took 10 weeks to rehab and recover.

Then walked around for five days chasing a small white ball.

Yay! How courageous and strong!

~ Glenn

Even though I golf, and I hold Tiger in high regard as a golfer, I did have to laugh at the announcers talking about how difficult it was to walk around the course (while someone else schleps your bag) after that surgery. I mean, guys play pro football a few weeks after that surgery.

By the way, Glenn, it's not just that Tiger can beat you at golf, it's that you are nothing.

A nobody.

Because some annonymous guy on the internet said so?

Someone has a high self worth problem!

I don't like Eldrick, so I am a nobody?

OK, I'll start bowing down at the altar of the "courageous" Eldrick!

Then I'll be a somebody!

Thanks for the heads up...

~ Glenn

No, Glenn, you're a nobody because you're a nobody. It has nothing to do with Tiger, or an anonymous guy on the internet. It's just a result of you being you, kiddo.

No, monty...you must have reason, right?

I mean this is first time I ever posted here.

You agree that the announcing was over the top.

Yet I am a nobody?

Please, enlighten the room with your witty reasoning!

~ Glenn

There's been a significant dropoff in the quality of debate lately. Maybe it's me.

Glenn - my boss is a golfer, dedicates most of his life to it actually (on the days when I can get him into the office he is quite piqued that I have taken him from the golf course) he has said many times, and will no doubt say many times in the future that Tiger is simply the best player ever, in the history of golf, on the face of the planet. Done. And the next time you get done with major knee surgery and then come back to win the US Open let me know, cause I would sure as hell like to say something about it.

I normally have no interest in golf, but I was at a party Saturday and the TV was turned on to the Open. Woods made one put from outside the green that hopped into the cup. Two other long puts hooked into the cup on a sloped green. Incredible! This guy is in a class by himself along with Mohammad Ali and Michael Jordan.

I don't care if your boss invented the game.

Eldrick is still just another guy who plays golf. He is not a god to be worship as we hear on the broadcasts every time he plays.

He is a very good golfer...but I don't have to like him.

Heck you can't even compare him to other golfers because he has such an advantage in his equipment and medical advances.

Some people posted they loved him.

I posted I didn't.

And the lovers came a runnin'.

Chill people.

Its called an opinion...

Apparently no one can criticize Eldrick unless they are a great golfer?

Remember that the next time you criticize an elected official...unless you have won an election too.

~ Glenn

Glenn, why begrudge others' desire to discuss a sport or a player they enjoy playing or watching? You dislike Tiger, have no love for Eldrick. Noted. Why waste your time and energy on this thread?

Tiger is a "monster." Not his best tournament, by far, but very entertaining.

I was just opining that it wasn't much of a win...yes still a win, but hardly what the "greatest" should have done.

And I get personal attacks over it?

I'm not saying you can't enjoy him...just that I do not.

So I am a nobody! LOL!

~ Glenn

Glenn must be the only person in the world not to like Tiger Woods. I think Tiger has already proven that he is the greatest golfer of all time. He looks and sounds like a movie star and his personal life is so interesting and compelling. His Dad and Mom are anazing people.

"THE1GLENN".....Everyone has the right to there own opinion. But you have no knowledge of what the Hell you are talking about as it pertains to Mr. Tiger Woods. Because the strenth of his Personality an his ability on the golf course, MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of dollars have been given to charities. How much have you given lately?

People watch sport for any number of reasons one of wich is to see skilled people do this that make them happy, then you have fucks like yourself who wouldn't know what a jock strap was for.

There are 6 Billion people in the World an Mr. Woods is the best at what he does out of those 6 billion, what the fuck can you do besides sitting in you basement with your dick in your hands making idiotic statements writing on a fucking computer, you are a ignorant FUCK!!!

I'm sure his parents were great.

Well, to Tiger.

I'm not so sure the grown children from his first marriage were very fond of old Earl.

It amazes me hoe I can criticize a sports figure and people jump to his defense like I am beating a pup seal.

~ Glenn

Again, so I don't make the kind of money Eldrick does so I can't dislike him?

And because I don't like the adoration a guy who chases a small white orb around manicured courses gets I am an "ignorant fuck"?

Maybe you folks should get out a bit and get some fresh air.

All those hours glues to the set watching that little white dot against the blue sky...you'd be better off actually going out and taking up the game yourself.

Oh, btw, I suck at golf.

I won't claim to be a scratch golfer.

I also won't idolize a guy and call him "courageous" because he could walk around for five days (while someone else carried his clubs) 2 and 1/2 months after having his knee scoped.

I'm sure he couldn't afford to have the best care and training after that surgery either, right?

I read this site daily.

I know it can denegrate in to name calling when the issue is imprtant.

But tiger?

I must really have hit a nerve.

~ Glenn

One more thing...

You gotta love that I have conservatives AND liberals bashing me for not liking Tiger!

Wait until I start talking politics!

~ Glenn

Your nick is appropriate. I don't think the history books have a column that says "barely", fool.

Yes, Jack was 46 when he won the Masters...

noone HAS to like anything or anybody.
and golf is a game that when it hooks you, everything else can take a back seat and its hard to explain its alure because its SO GOD DAMNED FRUSTRATING MOST OF THE TIME.........

and if you have a real pain somewhere on your body and you are trying to play, TRUST ME......it hurts like hell because of the torque that you put your bosy through, but YES they probably went a little overboard on it, because they usually do when its tiger,.

and someone mentioned his wife and what he has done is answered the question people had when he was single and doing all of this. the question was when he got married, would all that make him just one of the great golfers and he has answered that.

A game where you can't even take a picture while the "action" is going on. And there is no one trying to stop you.

You can't take a picture because the game of golf requires extreme concentration they don't need cameras clicking and flashes going off and people moving and jostling around in the crowd in order to get a better camera shot. Haven't watched much golf, have you?

Professional golfers are athetes. The game requires skill, training, and physical stamina. Just because Woods isn't grunting and slamming his entire body into some other guy like a football linebacker doesn't mean the sport of golf is not considered athletic.

yes and I can tell you that when you play golf a lot, it takes a lot out of your body. since retirement and playing all the time, I have had two problems with elbow and shoulders that took up to two months to heal. now we all know its not like linebackers or defensive backs slamming into them but that doesnt mean they arent athletic.
and there is a reason that all of the young bucks on tour now go to the workout trailer almost as much as the range.

A conventioneer who got really drunk the night before woke up next to a strange woman. To his horror he discovered they were wearing matching wedding rings.

Carefully and ever so slowly he dressed, grabbed his suitcase, and golf bag.

She woke up just as he was about to close the door. "Baby, we just got married! Come back to bed! Let's make LOVE!"

Thinking quickly, he said, "Well, honey. The thing is I have to play golf first thing in the morning as soon as I wake up. Before breakfast, before brushing my teeth, before coffee, everything. I'm sorry. I should have been more honest with you.

She said, "Aw, baby. That's okay. You come back and we'll make love. Say, since we're being so honest with each other I guess I should tell you I"m a hooker".

He pulled a 7 iron out of his bag and said, "That's no problem. Just turn your grip around a little like this..."

Why did the PGA start making course much longer 10 years ago so only long hitters could win?

Answer: Tiger Woods

If you look at the majors for the last ten years you will see a common denominator to just about all the winners and that is distance. Its near impossible for a short driver to have a chance. Rocco Mediate never made a single par 5 in less than 3 strokes while Tiger and the other long hitters were usually there in 2. That gives the long hitters 8 more chances for a lower score per tournament. If you look at most of the majors that Tiger has won you will see that he was handily beat on the par 3 and 4's of them but had an overwhelming advantage on the par 5's. That hardly makes him the greatest but just the best of the long hitters.

The only major in the last 10 years I can think of that was won by a true short driver was Mike Weir's win at the masters. Of course after that they significantly lengthened that course again and he hasn't been heard of since.

Now imagine this if 10 years ago they had instead of lengthening the course just started narrowing them considerably and made smaller greens then those short hitters with great accuracy would have dominated the majors and most other tournaments.

Bee Swell

Putting is far more important than driving. As is wedging.

Tiger Woods is an awesome putter.

Tiger Woods is a great player so why did the PGA custom tailor so many courses to fit his game. Its all about the money. Its the same reason superstars in the NBA rarely foul out. Its the same reason baseball turned a blind eye to the steroids being used by Bonds and other home run hitters.

Bee Swell

CRACK-
I agree with you that television ($$$$$) wants Tiger in the hunt. He's golden in terms of ratings and course attendance.

To your point about lengthening the courses, I think it's as much a recognition of the improvements in golfers' equipment which has led to longer courses. Better clubs, balls, etc.

Jack Nicklaus spoke to that some time ago and wondered how much better he'd be if he could have used today's equipment while he was in his prime.

I enjoy watching Tiger - just as I appreciate the athletic dominance of an Ali, Jordan, Orr, or any number of others who excel at what they do. Unlike many pro golfers, Woods is really an athlete. I could easily picture him as a defensive back, wide receiver or a point guard or outfielder.

As to the knee issue, he didn't say anything about it and had just won a tournament when he went in for surgery shortly thereafter. He's not one to make excuses and showed guts in maintaining a high level of play while in obvious pain.

I hate to agree with you even about the greatest game ever invented but this is so true.

at the major tournament level
at the nationwide tour level
champions tour
at the womens level
amatuer golf
wednesday morning 4 ball
thursday scramble
jumior golf
saturday morning team play
match play
the game I am leaving for in about an hour
how far you drive it

doesnt matter what level, what handicap, HOW MANY ACES YOU HAVE MADE>.....HEE HEE.....

if you dont make putts.....YOU DONT WIN

and people talk about how far tiger hits it BUT there are others now hitting at far as he does, so why dont you here about them??? easy......he is the best allround putter on any tour....long ones, short ones, intermediate ones...doesnt matter.

Tiger is #39 on putts per round average this season.

#29 in driving distance.

Tied for #154 in driving accuracy.

#1 in Greens in regulation

#104 in sand saves

#1 in scrambling

What that says to me is he is pretty good and fixing his mistakes, but not very good at avoiding them.

But he's playing since he was three...maybe he learned how to recover from bad shots after a while?!?!

~ Glenn

As usual, Crackpipe doesn't know what he's talking about. If anything, they've tried to "Tiger-proof" courses, not the opposite. Are you saying that Tiger would have a problem if he could drive every Par 4, or come in with a wedge every time? 'Cause that's what he'd do if they hadn't lengthened a lot of those courses.
