Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

President George Bush was given such a splendid welcome by Pope Benedict XVI yesterday that rumors started flying that the President, like Tony Blair before him, was on the verge of converting to Catholicism, according to The Independent. It was a Vatican visit such as no other head of state has ever enjoyed. Instead of greeting him, like all previous high-ranking visitors, in the papal library of the Apostolic Palace, the Pope took Mr Bush round the medieval St John's Tower then gave him a tour of the Vatican gardens, culminating in a brief open-air concert by the Sistine Chapel Choir.

He'd be in the confessional for a month.

hmmmm...united methodist...

catholic...

united methodist - catholic.

BFD! neither one preach solely from the bible NOR do they study or heed prophecy, which is one-quarter of the bible.

i'd say go for it!

The Pope must have given him one hell of a reach around.

They're working up a lounge act....

Bennie and the Bush. Bennie plays it straight. Bush plays it.

THAT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING. Franklin Graham may arm-wrestle Pope Benedict for the soul of George W. Bush. (They say everyone is redeemable.) But some prize they would win!!

(If a fisherman caught a fish like G.W. Bush, he'd cut the line and let it swim away. Fast!)

Hate him to what?

WOW! Such atypical tolerance and intelligence from the left! [/sarcasm]
No religious bigotry here. No sirree.

I wonder if the Muslims would be treated to such sweetness and light if the headline read "Bush 'may convert to Islam'."

I wonder if angry millitant blacks would be treated to such sweetness and light if it read "Bush 'may join Trinity United Church'".

You kiddies are little more than predictable immature caricatures that define the phrase 'useful idiots.'

So much for being "charitable" with my following comment but I don't care.

Keep Bush out of my Catholic Church. The Pope doesn't want him and neither do I.
Bush would only convert to Catholism in a desperate last minute "Hail Mary" pass to throw out at the end of his Presidency in a pitiful attempt to salvage some of his legacy as the worst President ever. Too late now.

You people are nuckin futs.

Chris shows that momentary politics are greater than the love of Christ. A person can be totally fucked up, and that means he is not welcome in her church. Is that what the Pope says?

Australian defies US church on sex abuse

In his book, Confronting Power And Sex In The Catholic Church: Reclaiming The Spirit Of Jesus, Bishop Robinson argues that the church's celibacy requirement has contributed to the sex abuse crisis. He openly criticises the papacy for failing to provide leadership, and wonders whether the church has been more concerned with managing the scandal than confronting it.
For attempting to speak truth to power, I'd be willing to bet that Bishop Robinson may find himself excommunicated in the not too distant future if he goes ahead with this book tour.
What he's saying makes the Vatican highly uncomfortable and very nervous, because he's really close to the mark when he talks about celibacy as an unrealistic model for many priests.

Fortunately for him, this papal denunciation may well have the "banned in Boston" for his book. - M. R.

You'll have other things to be concerned about on that day.

I would just love to hear what the religious will have to say if this comes to pass.

I mean many of them feel that the Roman Catholic Church is the great whore.

Bush should convert to human first.

"Matthew 25:40 -- The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'"

I think that admonition applies much more aptly to Mr. Bush himself that to CC.

Bush may convert to Catholicism?

After surviving pedophile priest scandals and hiring a new nazi Pope the last thing the Catholic churtch needs is to be burdened by is the inclusion of Dumbya into their ranks.

And Jesus facepalmed.

Be Well.

I told you the Catholic Church will cease to exist in a 100 years.

POPE: "Mr. President Bush, have you ever heard voices?"

BUSH: "Yes, your Hollyness"

POPE: "H O L Y ness"

BUSH: "Ya, whatever"

POPE: "And what did they say?"

BUSH: "To invade Iraq"

POPE: "You know, Jesus said, "Blessed are the Peacemakers for they shall be called the Children of God"?

BUSH: "Yes, your Hollyness, but God Himself told me to invade At least that's who the voice told me he was"

POPE: "I think before you can join the Church you'll need an exorcism. How's next Tuesday?"

BUSH: "You mean...right, uh, the day after Monday?"

POPE: "Yes, Mr. President"

BUSH: "My head won't got turning all the way around like that girl will it? I hope she's still OK. What was here name, Belinda, right? She must be like 40 or something."

POPE: "It might"

BUSH: "Hmmm What about projectilating vomit?"

POPE: "It could happen"

BUSH: "Ah, all right. I just won't eat the night before"

POPE: "Ok, my son. See you Tuesday"

BUSH: "This Tuesday? You mean right after this Monday?"

POPE: "Yes"

BUSH: "Well, uh. OK. Can we do it at your place? They just painted the White House while I was here in Europe getting kudzu from all these Europoion deciders"

POPE: "Fine. See you then"

BUSH: "Can I smooch your ring Bernie boy?"

POPE: "I'd rather you don't"

BUSH: "What if I just give it a little peek?"

POPE: "You mean a 'peck'?"

BUSH: "Ya, that's what I mean"

POPE: "I don't think so. See you Tuesday"

BUSH: "Before I go can you give me a sprinkle with that Holly Water?"

POPE: "You mean Holy Water?"

BUSH: "Ya, you know what I mean"

POPE: "I'm not sure I do"

BUSH: "Never mind. OK. Cya Bernie Boy"

POPE: (gives furtive glance at Cardinal meaning the meeting is over...secret "get rid of this guy, would ya?)

(Cardinal gives imperceptible nod)

Read the article twice, and it didn't suggest anything like what the title says.

Journalistic license, I s'pose.

did I miss anything?

dear god, save us from your followers.

(Bush back at the Vatican..)

BUSH: "Hey, Bernie Boy...er, would you rather I call you Holy?"

POPE: (sighing) "Yes, what is it?"

BUSH: "Am I going to Hell if we don't do that exercise-ism thing?"

POPE: "Probably so"

BUSH: "Hmmm. Say, how old is this...(drops ancient artifact)....DAMMIT....uh, I mean darn"

POPE: "Get the HELL out of here!!!"

BUSH: "OK, Bern...er...Holy Boy. I'll call ya"

who would want to claim that?

Posted by Bani at 2008-06-15 07:55 PM | Reply

I will claim that

I'm Lutheran and my Filipina wife is Catholic, and we both kneel for the Eucharist; in whatever church we are in, Chris is our sister in Christ.

So, I claim (proclaim) that CalifChris is within my personal sphere of love and prayer. Christian love does not depend on politics.

Liberals will discount that, but you have already proven yourselves, by your profound lack of charity. you espouse compassion, but then demand that others pay for it.

Who would want to claim that?

You'll have other things to be concerned about on that day.

Yes, I will have other concerns that day; planning for eternity can't be easy.

Also, standing near you, I will want a bandana to cover my mouth and nose.

I think Bush must be off his rocker or he finally realized that the god he worships is a phoney. Wasn't it god that told him to go to Iraq and do the things hes done. Sounds to me like Bush was Bushwhacked so now he wants to find the real God. Sooner or later he may conclude like many of us that a supernatural being who has nothing better to do than watch our every move and sit behind a desk entertaining requests from his minions of angels doesn't exist. Unfortunately he will discover this truth after the damage has already been done.

Dickheads have been saying this for 1700 years. But now it's different: some lazy slob in a 3rd floor walk-up in Trenton, New Jersey, declares the end of the Catholic Church.

Conveniently, Joma's declaration is for 100 years in the future, 97 years after he's dead.

"I told you" -- what an arrogant piece of shit

There are usually too many supervening variables to enable futurists to make successful predictions regarding the future of society, especially with Chaos Theory, and the Lorenz' "butterfly effect." Of course, jomama may be thinking ambiguously, sort of like the Delphic Oracle, so mankind itself might be annihilated by a cosmic catastrophe, and jomama from "Tartarus" will say, "I told you so. Where's the Church?"

What stakes do you propose to bet on the "jomama conjecture," jomama?

By the way, the Oracles were breathing fumes that gave rise to their psychedelic "dreams," but since you're lucid, why not flesh out your prediction. Tell us what and how will occur in sequence. Visonaries share their visions. Check Revelations.

Are Christians retarded?
Seriously?

Could you imagine how out-of-the-box-shit-crazy the Talibaptist would be if he did something like that...to many fundies the Catholic Church is like a cult.

I just love the left's hypocrisy. You guys are really something. You do know obama purports to be a Christian? How can you vote for someone who believes in a god that you think is imaginary? If everyone who believes in a god, Christian or other is "drinking the koolaide", what does that say about all you atheists/agnostics who deride believers on this site but will cast your vote for a believer to be the leader of your country?

You guys are no better than the conservatives who constantly preach their morals and then fall from their own pedestal.

Where is the liberal tolerance? Where is the acceptance of other ideas? You guys are just absolutely right and the 90-95% of the rest of the world is just absolutely wrong? Liberal arrogance at it's finest!

I guess it is just so much easier to believe that you will not have to answer to anyone or anything and live your life without boundaries. Nice.

Hey Vermin, take 20 bucks downtown and buy yourself a blowjob from your mom. You seem tense.

"Could you imagine how out-of-the-box-shit-crazy the Talibaptist would be if he did something like that...to many fundies the Catholic Church is like a cult."

You're talking to people who think the Catholics are the fundies.

So no, their ignorant asses can't imagine the reaction..... They really have no idea.

When the Pope explained to President Bush that the Catholic Church used to "Draw & Quarter" people for treason and heresy against the church employing methods including dis-embowelment during the 16th and 17th century, Georgey said..."Where do I sign up?"

Because unfortunately it's gotten to the point in this country that in order to run for president, you have to prove how pious you are. Religion and the strength of one's beliefs have obtained an all too powerful position in todays politics.

"what does that say about all you atheists/agnostics who deride believers on this site but will cast your vote for a believer to be the leader of your country?"

Absolutely nothing.

"You guys are no better than the conservatives who constantly preach their morals and then fall from their own pedestal. "

Riiiggghhhhttt. There's clearly no difference between voting for a candidate who happens to be religious and railing against homosexuality while tapping your foot in the men's room.

"I guess it is just so much easier to believe that you will not have to answer to anyone or anything and live your life without boundaries. Nice."

Believe it or not, but some don't need fear of some future retribution as a reason to live their lives appropriately. Being atheist/agnostic doesn't mean one's life is full of debauchery and disrespect to all around them.

So statements such as this are just BS?

And during the course of that sermon, he introduced me to someone named Jesus Christ. I learned that my sins could be redeemed. I learned that those things I was too weak to accomplish myself, He would accomplish with me if I placed my trust in Him. And in time, I came to see faith as more than just a comfort to the weary or a hedge against death, but rather as an active, palpable agent in the world and in my own life. - BHO June 23, 2007

Yeah, sounds like he is just trying to prove a point. You know what, in his case I think you are right.

Riiiggghhhhttt. There's clearly no difference between voting for a candidate who happens to be religious and railing against homosexuality while tapping your foot in the men's room.

Riiiggghhhhttt. There's clearly no difference in constantly bashing the values and beliefs of Christians and then abandoning your steadfast beliefs to hold your nose and vote for one. Rationalize on JP. Like I said, it's easy if you don't have to worry about someone else making the rules.

HA HA... Just because he converts doesn't mean he automatically earns Salvation. That's for only a select few Catholics. But if he truly is sorry and repents, there is no limit to the evil one cand do that god won't forgive.

At least that's what I remember from my catechism.

**** Salvation. That's for only a select few Catholics

At least that's what I remember from my catechism.

Posted by Hagbard_Celine at 2008-06-16 01:06 PM

In catechism they teach you that babies that die before being baptised go to "Limbo", but did those priests and nuns ever confirm whether those babies actually bump into each other while floating out there in "Limbo"?

"Yeah, sounds like he is just trying to prove a point. You know what, in his case I think you are right. "

How many politicians that preach about the importance of their faith do you actually think are sincere? How many do you think are doing it just to placate and pander to the religious right who will forgive anyone and anything as long as one professes Jesus as their savior? Maybe I'm too cynical, but whenever I hear a politician professing their faith publicly, whether they be Dem or Repub, I find myself overwhelmed by the stench of bullshit.

"There's clearly no difference in constantly bashing the values and beliefs of Christians and then abandoning your steadfast beliefs to hold your nose and vote for one."

You're painting with some broad brushes here. The vast majority of atheists/agnostics I know could give two shits about what someone else believes UNTIL those beliefs are pushed on them. I know it's anecdotal but so is your perception of Christian bashing.

As for "abandoning your steadfast beliefs" atheism/agnosticism aren't beliefs. Voting for someone who believes in God is not abandoning anything. The problem with overly religious types is you have no ability to leave your faith out of anything and you look down upon those who do. Someone who has made a PERSONAL decision to be atheist is not a hypocrite for voting for someone who isn't. There's that "liberal tolerance" you were lamenting in your first post.

"Rationalize on JP. Like I said, it's easy if you don't have to worry about someone else making the rules."

Keep living your life expecting some sort of reward or at the very least lack of punishment. I think you'd find it liberating to live a good life simply because it's right, not because you fear the repercussions of not doing so.

JPW I believe you are misinterpreting my argument. The initial point I was trying to make was that the majority - not all - of the libs on this site bash Christianity constantly. Maybe you are not one of them - I am not going to go back through all your posts. But it seems slightly arrogant to not be open to the idea of a belief in a greater being than man - just as it would be myopic to not consider that there is not one.

However, the labeling of Christians as "koolaid drinkers" and the like is well documented. And the labelers are going to vote for one of these so called "koolaid drinkers". If "you" not you, think that Christians are so delusional, how could you possibly think that they have the capacity to run a country?

Stop overtly bashing the Christians for their beliefs. If you want to bash them for trying to force Christianity on you that is a fair gripe, but bashing their beliefs and then voting for a Christian? That is the intolerance I was speaking of.

I think you'd find it liberating to live a good life simply because it's right, not because you fear the repercussions of not doing so.

Who determines what's right or wrong JP? The government? Who is the government? You? Your neighbor? The guy in prison? CEO of Exxon? Who is "right" enough to make the rules?
