Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Maddox, an artist and cabinetmaker in Medford, Ore., has been tinkering with pulse jet engines for seven years now. He's recently started bolting them to old-school cruiser bicycles and selling them on eBay, and a video of him riding one is bouncing around the blogosphere.

We first need to clarify something.

A bicycle has no power of any type other the pedaling of the (usually) human rider(s).

A motorcycle has by definition got a none human power source.

This make this cycle a motorcycle and this or similar has long since been done. (An acquaintance Named Larry Welch used a dual outlet rocket)

Maybe I'll have this guy put jet engines on the old Schwinn I've got in my garage. Cool old bike -- just three shifts on the handle bar. If the foothills around my house weren't so steep I'd take it out and ride it but you have to have the stamina of an Olympic trainer to ride up these steep hills.

Still, I'll need some transportation standby when gasoline hit $15 a gallon which at the rate it's going will probably be by the end of next month so...pimp my Schwinn.

We'll be reading about this in the Darwin Awards next week.

Does the box say "Acme Rocket Bike" on it anywhere?

This cannot end well.

Pulse jets are just about the worst possible power source for a bicycle/motorcycle. They are enormous, operate at literally red-hot temperatures, are unbelievably loud and are produce very low thrust at low speeds.

They only work marginally well at high altitudes and high speeds. The Germans used them in the 'buzz bombs' in WWII.

The only worse power source I can think of would be a steam engine powered by burning the rendered fat from overweight Republicans. But at least that one would never run short of fuel sources.
