I attended a private Catholic High School. 35% of my classmates were not Catholic. Does this mean that it wasn't a Catholic school?

Does the fact that it IS a Catholic school mean that a standard cirriculum wasn't taught - science, English, History, etc?

Jeff - you are factually incorrect on 2 points:

1. There is no such thing in Indonesia as a "public Muslim school" Schools are either public, or private. However, part of the curriculum in all schools is a requirement to study Islam. If you have ever watched the report CNN did a while back (its been posted here many times) where they visited that school, they showed kids of all religions attending a modern school, with teachers (male & female) in modern dress. They even noted that Christmas was observed in the school for Christian students.

2. Obama was not born into a "Muslim family" His father & stepfather were Muslim, his mother and he were not. I don't believe his half sister born in Indonesia is either. My Indonesian-born partner's father was Muslim, his mother is Catholic. He and his siblings were raised Catholic. They were never considered Muslim by anyone because their father was.

I've been wanting to go there since I was in 10th grade and first heard gamelan music, so it would be cool to hear about some spots that might not be as oft-visited as some of the main tourist places.

I have a few friends who voted for Hillary in the primaries. Of those, two are still staunch Hillary supporters. The rest, about four, are now Obama supporters. I have heard of people who voted for Hillary who now regret their vote, mainly because of her treatment of Obama. I haven't heard of anyone who voted for Obama who have changed their minds. Have any of you? It will be ancedotal evidence to be sure, but I'd be interested to see if the trends outlined in the article above are being seen by anyone else.

Sorry Ness - I just now saw your post. I'll ask him about them. He's from Surabaya in East Java.

If you're going to Indonesia, I recommend Bali. The Nusa Dua area is less touristy and there is a large artistic community there. Lots of music, art, and other local cultural stuff. Check out the Ketcak performance at the Uluwatu Luhur Temple, if you can. Its a reenactment of the Ramayana epic from Hindu mythology. The temple is on a cliff overlooking the ocean and they do a performance at sunset. Spectacular! Its about 45 minutes from Nusa Dua.

Jogjakarta in Central Java is also very cool and very artsy, but not that well known by foreign tourists, yet. Don't miss the ancient temple of Borobudur.
