I had a neighbor, thankfully he lived accross the street, who would mow his lawn every other week. The problem was that it would be so long that he'd leave huge clumps of grass clippings not only on his lawn, but also on the sidewalk. He wouldn't do jack shit about it either. His next door neighbor would occasionally sweep up the sidewalk, just so he didn't have to look at huge clumps of dead grass.

When selling our first house my next door neighbor's entire yard was under re-construction, some of it geared toward seriously positive long-term results. His entire yard was under-elevated and thus was basically a marsh. He had 20 yards of dirt dropped, he rented a Bobcat and raised the elevation of his entire yard. This, in itself, was a good thing. The problem was that he wasn't able to seed/sod right away, so he put straw down over his dirt. It looked horrible, but in fairness, it was horrible in the way that road construction is horrible, it gets worse before it gets better, but it DOES get better. What compounded his problem was the chicken-wire fence he erected around his above-ground pool and the homemade, see-through, chicken wire compost bin he had in the middle of his yard.

We had several perspective buyers so turned off by the sight of his yard, that they never even gave our house serious consideration.

You are deluding yourself if you believe that a 'Sanford and Son' next door neighbor wouldn't impede your ability to sell your house.

I don't know to what degree my neighbor's yard contributed, other than a couple of prospective buyers mentioning it to us and we pointed out that his yard was on the mend (20 yards of dirt and all) to which we received very skeptical stares.

That said, our first house was a quad-level. I loved the layout, but quads and tri's are difficult to sell.

Yeah, that's why I felt that the analogy didn't address the point, because there was a way to remove the association stigma from those other cars... i.e. to drive away from the lot. Unless you live in a double wide, you can't drive your house away from the nasty property next door.
