Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

An alarming number of 21-year-olds are participating in a dangerous practice of consuming 21 alcoholic beverages to celebrate reaching legal drinking age, according to a new report by researchers at the University of Missouri. More than a third of men and a quarter of women surveyed at the university who drank alcohol the day they turned 21 reported consuming at least that many drinks of beer, wine and liquor. "We were floored," said Patricia Rutledge, lead author of the report.

If you didn't double it to 42 you were a puss.

P.S. I didn't say it was smart.........

Yea but how much of that comes right back up.

Mmmmmm recycling.

I don't want to think about that...........

Can't say I see the bad side to a bunch of drunken 21 year olds drinking themselves to death. Darwin, and all that. They type of person that would pull this stunt is pretty much the exact kind of person we can do without.

I did some dumb things between the ages of 17 and 25...I am sooooooo glad this wasn't one of them.

I think at 21 I could drink 21 beers with no problem other than feeling really bloated.

SEE TED KENNEDY THREAD, 2 COLUMNS OVER ============================== ==========>

I did it. But at that point in my life--i could drink most people under the table (glad i don't have that "skill" anymore!!) I was given a slip of paper in the beginning of the night--it had columns for #, time, name of the shot, who gave it to you and your signature. Had a couple friends make sure i was "paced" as well as possible--good to have someone looking out for you on a night like that. It can be kinda tough when you have 4-5 people standing around with smiles and shots made of whatever ill concoction they've created.

It is pretty funny what happens to a signature over 21 drinks.

My 21st shot = Skim milk and Bicardi 151

Gross.

I can't remember how much I drank when I was 21, but I doubt it was 21 drinks. I think I just got happy drunk and shot fireworks across the frozen lake at my buddy's house. My birthday is New Year's Eve, so everyone else was pretty drunk as well. Good times.

That was the norm for my group more than a decade ago.

If you had really good friends, they would make sure drink #21 was a shot guaranteed to make you puke. And all would be well.

they would make sure drink #21 was a shot guaranteed to make you puke.

For me, that's the trifecta of Jager, Rumplemintz, and Goldschlager. Hell, even thinking about it makes beer taste sour.

Morons that's what they are. Booze (good booze) is meant to be savored getting smashed only ruins the experience completely.

I usually have 21 drinks to celebrate reaching Friday.

Yea but how much of that comes right back up.

My cousin did this with beer a zillion years ago. I remember him in the bar parking lot, hanging out the door of his friend's 2 door (from the back seat) puking his guts out and the cops cruising by, putting their spotlight on him and laughing thier asses off.

Good times...

I don't see this as a big deal. The people that have problems are those that had very little experience with alcohol prior to turning 21. I started drinking pretty early on so 21 drinks was not too big of a deal. I once drank 36 bud lites over the course of an 8 hour beer olympics and then went to the bar to finish off the night. It is all about pacing yourself. Besides, with beer, you never really buy it, you just rent it....

Damn lucky Bastards. I couldn't drink when I turned 21. I was ummmm Incommunicato Ummmm yeah THAT's it.

Hear, hear!

Of course this sort of wisdom is not available to a 21 year old.

21 shots is less than a fifth of booze.

I could throw down a fifth in a day easily when I was 21.

Of course I am 6'3" tall and weighed 225 pounds then.

I wouldn't recommend it to shrimps.

21 Nattie lites would just make you piss!

21 shots of everclear would kill you.

I'd rather have the everclear. The headache from the nattie lite would make me wish I was dead.

Booze (good booze) is meant to be savored getting smashed only ruins the experience completely.

I don't disagree. Cadenheads 12yo neat is heaven in a glass. However, nothing wrong with getting drunk as a kite on Dewars occasionally. Two separate pleasures...

21 O.V Ponies.. no problem

You mean your cellmates didn't make you that infamous jailhouse
"PRUNO"
to celebrate you turning 21?

We were shookdown at least 2 a month and sometimes more. It would have been virtualy useless to make Jailhouse hooch.

14 shots in an hour and a half - then passed out.. That was my 21st.. Older me can surprisingly drink younger me under the table..

Our sons turn 21 in July. I have the feeling family history will repeat itself. Back in the day I only drank on days that ended in "y."

"Many Turning 21 with 21 Drinks"

The only reason stuff like (young adults killing themselves with booze) is an issue is because the drinking age is so old.

As a nation, we'd be better off lowering the age to 18 or younger with a parent's consent. If people were exposed to responsible alcohol consumption at a lower age (ie, glass of wine with dinner, beer on Sunday, etc...), it would take the novelty out of drinking. It would also mean 18 year olds wouldn't go to their first college party with no sense of their own tolerance.

With more tolerant views towards alcohol, it would also mean those who are underage and want to drink (and already do) could do so in the open. If you take the potential scarcity of alcohol away, underage drinkers would be less inclined to binge when its available.

Do you know what happens the day you turn 21?

There's a reason you don't see 21 year olds drinking Glen-whatever. It's also the same reason they make 30 packs of the shittiest beer around.

hell its 1:30 pm here and i think i'm on my 22nd beer...buncha pussies

Now would be the time to queue up the outrage for wasted federal dollars doing little more than keeping some scientist living comfortably...

Let us know when a scientist is the highest paid employee of a university.

The football coach here gets a $400,000 bonus just for winning a game.

If I wasn't independently wealthy I couldn't afford to work here.
