The immigrants from Asia as groups, and the elites of Cuba who fled, are far more interested not only in being assimilated, but also in participating higher up on the socioeconomic scale. They generally value education and the families' goals are focused on the betterment of their children, supporting utilization of opportunities, which for them involves obtaining jobs that require "credentials" and consequently enable them to live a better life. Filipinos used to have an additional leg up because almost everyone there spoke English. Also, in addition to other factors, I speculate that what amy also be critical is that the immigrants from "elsewhere" than Mexico generally have a greater capacity to learn material that requires them to deal with abstract thought.
These studies are transparent manipulative devices. The failure of the Mexican's to assimilate is noted, and some valid reasons are given, such as their large numbers, which result in parallel communities developing not requiring use many mainstream services. Their numbers even support alternative radio and TV stations, since advertisers reach a large profitable market through them.
Demonstrating that immigrants assimilate is set forth to demonstrate the success of assimilation by some groups and mask the fact that the Mexicans are not assimilating.
The idea of ballots in a foreign language boggles the mind. California will become a predominatly Latino state based n the influx of illegal aliens and the anchor baby regulations that exist. The leading case regarding acquisitiion of citizenship by birth on U.S. territory alone, jus soli, rather than through the status of a parent or parents, jus sanguinis, is subject to reinterpretation to overturn such interpretation in regard to the intrusive Mexican population.
This country erects barriers against identifying and expelling illegal aliens, and is thereby furthering someone's agenda. It is beyond comprehension that "profiling" is somehow excluded from the armamentarium of those seeking to identify illegal aliens. An accent and unfamiliarity with the location is prima facie evidence for such a determination. But then, we also don't use profiling to identify potential terrorists. It's as if a white man committed a crime when living among pygmies in Africa, and the APB, or its equivalent, did not identify him as white. It's inexplicable in rational terms.
Anyway, big trouble is occurring in California, which despite its wealth and industry, is being overrun by people requiring goods and services that are disparate far beyond their contribution. This has resulted in destruction of the emergency health care system, for starters. This, of course, is not the "fault" of the illegal aliens but a function of their presence here. Those who created the system, and were complicit in its use by increasing numbers of illegal aliens, whose presence here they enabled and permitted, are responsible. Now this country is paying the piper with a large "underclass" that seems "permanent," but which with numbers will obtain incresasing political clout that will result in transfers of wealth from the rest of the citizenry. Even today, the political parties are catering to this subgroup, irrationally modifying immigration policies and practices to the detriment of the country. Critical mass has been passed. The prospects are dismal.
