I heard today that 40% of the freshman entering community colleges are reading only at an 8th grade level. Can anyone tell me how they were allowed to graduate high school -- even enter high school! - with only an 8th grade reading level?

This is nothing more than "social promotion" -- passing kids to the next grade up so they don't have a sense of low self-esteem. It's a disgrace because it doesn't help the kid to deal and function in the real world.

Real teachers TEACH and teachers also should not be punished because a teacher's ability today is judged only on how many of their students pass the "No Child Left Behind" state mandated tests where nothing else counts but test scores. That's why so many teachers "teach tests" and nothing more. They are judged by their students' test scores results -- not the knowledge they impart to their students. The U.S. desperately need to go back to teaching the three basics -- reading, writing and math. We will end up with a nation of illiterates within two generations.

What you say is true to a degree Chris but really what does that have to do with Rush using a tenth grade paper as if it were real intellectual commentary from the left??? I heard some of Rush's anti-education rant, anyone that really believes the "less is more" theory of education is welcome to continue listening but you should realize that doing so significantly lessens what little intelligence you had when you started. It isn't a coincidence that the rise of Rush has coincided with the fall of American's ability to read and think. He tells them right up front that they have no need to read and analyse, he will do it for them and many are just all too happy to let him.
