Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

DEARBORN, Mich. -- Jennifer Sharpe, 15, sold the most boxes in a season ever in the 91-year-history of Girl Scout cookies -- 17,328 boxes -- shattering the old record by around 3,000. "During cookie season we do nothing else," said her mom Pamela. "In this house, we eat, breathe and sleep cookies."

I remember when my kids were young, we always sold the most cookies (girl scouts) and candy (cub scouts). Selling is great for kids, like the girl in the article, it brings out their personality and gives them confidence. What we feared would be hard work always turned into fun.

Are they made with real Girl Scouts?

Awesome reference flag.

Ness,

Thanks for the image!

DANNI,

If you could teach your kids to sell the stuff of your posts, they could sell anything, even global warming and liberalism.

Good for her. Especially if, as the article says, she sold them in person herself. Aside from the funds the sales generate, the major benefit of having kids sell is to make them more comfortable in dealing with adults in a face-to-face business situation, and in a straightforward manner... skills they'll need in a few short years, and which many adults themselves lack.

....shame on her. The girl scouts should be taught that they should be shilling for taxpayer money. In addition, quit teaching them entrepreneurial skills.

Sincerely,

Some on the far DR Left

Seriously, who was the first to turn this political?
Oh, a righty.

Seriously, don't take yourself so seriously......

Absolutely Fabulous - That's the American Spirit. We should all send a note to Donald Trump to put this girl on a new show: "The Apprentice Jr. (tm)"

It would show off the best of capitalistic spirit in the country And prolly be a huge ratings hit!

Perhaps you should have some more coffee, Mr. Snappy Comeback.

Am I the only one who thinks her parents did all the selling?

If your posting was genuine, then I agree with you, except about the huge ratings part. If it was an attempt at sarcasm: FAIL.

"Mr. Snappy Comeback" vs Mr. Snarky Comeback.
Game on!

In my time with scouting, I've noticed that, invariably, the top sellers did the least actual selling of their own. It'd be nice to side with the "You're just jealous" crowd, since they're always more fun; but in this case the jerks are correct. If a girl scout sold 17 THOUSAND boxes of cookies, the odds are that she only sold a dozen of them herself before her family got "interested" in winning.

I thought the same thing. In fact, every kid outselling the others has their parents hawking this stuff at work or at the supermarket. There is almost always a parent doing the selling - especially at work.

I doubt she sold that many by herself. I don't believe it. Was she taking credit card orders? Nobody has money these days with gasoline prices so high.

True story...
Sometime last month??? at Wallyworld ...in line behind Fat family...momma and two beach ball kids.. They had their food stamp debit card pile sorted out from their cash pile. Cash pile was the usual soda, chips, candy, cookies, and beer....all brand name products.
We happened to leave by the same exit. The Fat family met up with Fat dad toting a carton of cigs under one arm...standing in line to buy freaking 4 boxes of gs cookies.
I wish I had it on vid...
I bought DH his fav..1 box of Samoans or whatever they call them now.Must be the name offended someone as they renamed them.

Girl Scout cookies are significantly smaller and not as good as they used to be. Ah well.
I bought a box of "Cracklin' Muslims" last week.

Not quite same storyline, but beach ball kids bring this up.

A couple of days ago I was at the supermarket. I saw a young (12 YO or so) beach ball kid barrelling through the aisles with a cart he was filling up with soda, chips, cookies, etc. Most "healthy" thing was some hot pockets. I was curious what a kid like that was doing shopping. So when I saw him going towards the front of the store, I had to follow.

A woman (presumably his mom?) got up off her own fat ass off the bench in front of the store near the cash registers and got in the checkout queue with the kid and paid for the groceries.

I was saddened and sickened at the same time by this. How could a mother give so little interest in her child's health?

DNA?

They also got politically correct. Whatever happened to good ol' Samoas? They were like crack in a cookie form. I do not like their replacement.

This girl is a Republican for sure. If she was democrat she would have given up too easy.

Every place I've ever worked there were always folks bringing in cookie sign-up sheets for that overpriced garbage. If it wasn't Girlscout cookies it was cans of popcorn. I always envisioned the kids to be little lard asses who came home and gave the sheets to their parents. Hey, you want to generate some money? Send them by with a leaf rake or a snow shovel. Fuck the scouts.

how dare she "out compete" the other girl scouts. they will no doubt succumb to feelings of insecurity. they should make it an "everybody wins" contest. no keeping score....blue ribbons for all.

Great. A little girl sells a bunch of cookies and half the conservatives on this board take credit for it. How typical.

I see we have a surrenderer here.

Welcome Igmoramus. if you need some white flags, they have a sale on white linen at walmart today.

Didn't this kid have any kind of life other than standing behind a card table and selling Girl Scout cookies in front of stores for the last 10 years? I mean, like how many "Cookie Badges" do you need to earn in order to feel good about yourself?

Her Mom should have encouraged her daughter to do other things with her life -- piano and dance lessons, play with her friends -- anything than spend all her non-school hours selling those stale boxes of GS cookies to passersby. Those GS cookes always tasted like cardboard anyway.

Girl Scout cookies used to be good and plentiful. Now You barely get 2 mouths full before you are all out of cookies. What gives??
