Florida beach-goer ticketed for wearing a speedo

I have a suspicion that it is a DR poster, I think I know whow, but won't say.

Last Tuesday, Jon Stewart explained the Detroit Text-Messageing Scandal on the Daily Show:

Yesterday on a local political program, Flashpoint, the commentators were so upset about this. I don't know why, it is funny.

In case anyone cares, this is what I thought of Saturday Night's Pistons game.

The daily show link abouve actually works, even though it might seem that it got cut off.

When Cousins Marry.....

You get a SpudDud(tm), a NULLandVOID (aka Billy'O'Crap'O'), a FrankFreak55(tm) and a Redneckville.

When Cousins Marry you get a lot of peole who vote for Hillary 'cause they think Obama is a Muslim.

That's OK, rodehardandputawaywet-if your father had never bumped uglies with his grandmother-she'd have never shit you out....

When cousins marry, you name the child Thomas, and he goes about his life in continuous doubt.

Its just nice to see an original insult here for once...

douche

Fouty, then a 19-year-old Army private first class from Walled Lake, was one of three U.S. soldiers abducted a year ago today in an insurgent ambush about 20 miles south of Baghdad. His mother still jumps when the phone rings, praying for any update, any news.

"I don't know if he's alive or dead," said Hilary Meunier, Fouty's mother, in a phone interview from her home in Texas. "I can't put closure to it."

Fouty remains missing, and for his family here and in Texas that has meant living the past year in a kind of tormented limbo -- waiting for word on the search, waiting for a happy ending, waiting for their hopes to be realized, or waiting for their ever-present fears to play out.

"I've never experienced the feeling of waiting so intensely or for so long, in my life," wrote Sarah Dibler, his 18-year-old half sister, on a MySpace page dedicated to her brother.

In the ambush near Mahmoudiya on May 12, four U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi translator were killed, and Fouty and two others taken captive. Along with Fouty, Spc. Alex R. Jimenez, 25, of Lawrence, Mass., remains missing. The body of one of the captives, Pfc. Joseph J. Anzack Jr., 20, of Torrance, Calif., was found after the ambush.

Just a reminder, carter never lost any hostages.

Lets have a competition. How many SDs will Obama pick up today? I'm jumping on The Page bandwagon and saying six. Anyone else want to guess?

On the back page there is an article about Bob Barr apparently being pressured by some Republicans not to run for president as a Libertarian.

My question is, if McCain is a tought war hero who survived years as a POW, then why is he afraid of Bob Barr? How is McCain gonna deal wth Iran and Al Qaeda if he can't even handle Bob Barr?

....what was the rate of inflation, the unemployment rate and interest rates when carter was president...........

P.S. I'm not defending the war in Iraq. My candidate voted against that "war".

Nah, it's only 10:22 a.m.

My question is, if McCain is a tought war hero who survived years as a POW, then why is he afraid of Bob Barr?

As much as people say that McCain is "McBush," and its just 4 more years of W, the reality is that McCain is a very moderate Republican who has angered the base many times by not going in lockstep with the GOP and has worked well with many on the DNC.

Bob Barr can exploit that by appealing to the party base that he is best in line with their values not McCain...

How is McCain gonna deal wth Iran and Al Qaeda if he can't even handle Bob Barr?

Has anyone downloaded and installed SP3 for XP?

Is it true that it craps out your PC so bad you have to reinstall Win XP?

Do NOT install Service Pack 3.

Why?

I just got a new laptop, and through running the 50,000 windows updates you have to run with a new system I figured what the hell, and let it download. I haven't had any problems yet, but remember I did it on a brand new system with few third party programs or anything liket that... If you have an old system with all sorts of stuff on it that could be causing the issues with SP3

www.informationweek.com

Its got an annoying ad at first, but apparently SP3 will add a performance boost...

They added that XP SP3's slick performance may lead some computer users to forgo Windows Vista

Vista blows... I went with Dell for my new laptop because they still offered a really nice system, that I made a hell of a lot nicer, with Windows XP still installed. I'm not going to spend weeks getting new drivers or finding new versions of software so I can see a couple new bells and whistles... not to mention all the stolen software that I have that won't work on Vista...

Another article on SP3:

www.computerweekly.com

Apparently if you install it you are locked into your browser version... as far as downgrading is concerned.

So if you install sp3 and you decide you hate IE7 you can't go back to 6. Even more nuts is if you are trying IE8 Beta you'd be stuck with that... and that would blow.

Tnanks Ride and Rob.

Just in case, I don't think I'll be installing it.

Newsworthy.

I concur, I think it is just too early and don't go past SP2 yet.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay may very well be the most revolutionary movie of the GW Bush Era.

Yes indeed, the travels and travails of these stoner dudes are way more politically challenging than the never-ending barrage of documentaries that have been preaching to the choir for the past few years. Who needs to see real torture and real racism in the documentary format when we can experience it viscerally and be implicated in it via a lot of really funny body humor and pot jokes? Sure Harold and Kumar is ostensibly a comedy.

I laughed uproariously during many scenes, but what makes this movie so utterly brilliant is how it uses its genre to make the audience incredibly uncomfortable and make us interrogate every phobia, ism and discriminatory practice that permeates every corner, every person, and every place in these here United States.

McCain is a very moderate Republican

WAS a moderate Republican. He's basically turned his back on everything he used to stand for, except 100 years more war. He won't even vote for his own immigration bill.

And I just got a new dell with Vista. Works well, unlike the version my wife got 6 months ago and had to be sent back for a new laptop.

Obama: "I've visited 57 states."

www.youtube.com

I've been using Vista for 6 months with no problems but everyone tells me "it sucks" I think this new sevice pack 3 for XP is to get everyone to move to Vista.

A song in honor of a special person's birthday today --

I spent 20 minutes downloading new drivers for hardware in the rig I just built. Not a big deal because I do it for windows XP too.

All of my software functioned perfectly fine. Photoshop 7, All my games that I've been playing for years and the brand new games that use DX10. None of them had any issues with Vista.

Next month, Windows XP reaches the point where you will no longer be able to purchase a system with Windows XP pre-installed. Should just suck it up. Otherwise you'll be like my 90 year old granny still running windows 95 on a pentium 200.

There's nothing about vista that spending a few hours with it won't fix. It drove me nuts for a few days with some of the annoyances here and there, but so did Windows XP Professional when I first upgraded.

Global Cooling is Going to Get you.

Not.

The temperature was appreciably above the long term average of 50.5 F (10.3 C). The previous highest average for the first few days of May was 57.7 F (14.3 C), which was experienced in 1804.

The CET is representative of a roughly triangular area of the United Kingdom enclosed by London, Bristol and Lancashire.

The record-breaking period was topped off by the hottest day of the year on Sunday when Great Malvern in Worcestershire baked in a sweltering temperature of 81.5 F (27.5 C).

Great Malvern narrowly beat Herstmonceux, East Sussex, which had an 81.1 F (27.3 C) temperature on Saturday.

"It has been a record-breaking start to May. It has been the hottest daily mean temperature since 1772," said Helen Chivers of the Met Office.

I am in the market for a laptop for my home. It would be used primarily for some word processing, some internet surfing, some internet poker, etc. Unless it adds a whole bunch to the cost, it would be great if I could play movies on it too.

Given that, anyone have suggestions for either system requirements or brands/models they would suggest? (Pretty much all new laptops are set up for wireless use, right?)

Any input much appreciated.

"(Pretty much all new laptops are set up for wireless use, right?)

Correct. I would suggest a minimum of 2 gb of memory for a machine running Vista, preferably 4 gb.

I have not seen a new laptop in years that didn't have integrated wireless. Just look at the specs to make sure. I would recommend a Lenovo ThinkPad - they are known to be the most reliable. Toshiba Tecra series is also a great laptop. I don't think either of these models are available in major stores, but most laptops sold in stores are pieces of shit. If you do want one from a store, Sony Vaio makes a decent laptop too.

Here is the lenovo site:
shop.lenovo.com

Also, if you're not concerned with weight and portability, a 17 inch screen is nice for watching movies.

To echo what Null said, get the most RAM you can afford. You would also want an intel processor, preferably the "core" or "centrino" versions.

Hard drive space depends on how much music or movies you plan to download and store on the computer, as well as how much software you plan to install, but anything 60GB or more should be fine.

"but most laptops sold in stores are pieces of shit. "

Baloney. Most laptops have the same components, i.e., AMD or Intel chips, etc. Just about any laptop from places like BestBuy, CompUsa, Fry's Electronics, etc., is pretty good.

"You would also want an intel processor, preferably the "core" or "centrino" versions."

AMD processors are just as good, and their dual core versions just as fast as Intel processors. The only difference: they're cheaper.

Thanks a lot, both of you. That is helpful. I have all our pictures, music, and video on our current PC and backed up to a separate drive, so I don't need much hard drive space.

Thanks again for the input.

AMD processors are just as good

I'm running AMD in my desktop and it depends on what you're doing with it. Intel has an edge right now so you if need performance in areas like video editing, 3D modeling, that's where to go.

But Nully is right about the price point, and most people will do just fine with an AMD.

I would recommend a Lenovo ThinkPad

Joe is right on this recommendation. I have a ThinkPad that's 12 years old and it still fires up (P120 w/ 40 Meg of RAM LOL). I have a newer T-series and I wouldn't trade it for anything made by HP, etc.

Titanium frame with a composite shell, great graphics, and a keyboard that you'll love.

Ditto on the RAM. 2 gig for XP, and 4 for Vista (though I don't recommend that OS).

Obama visited 58 states...

www.youtube.com

What media bias we hear nada about this. If it were mccain, they'd say it's proof of his senility, If Bush they'd say he was an idiot, if HRC they'd say she's confused and cuckoo, but if said by Obama, it's ignored.

Dave's right. If the media wasn't so biased towards Obama, they would have blown up that whole ridiculous Rev. Wright thing. What? They did? Oh yeah, never mind.

Dave,

Yeah I saw that and he clearly mispoke and meant to say 47 since he was talking about the contiguous states.

Not a huge Obama fan but for a Bush backer to go after that one is pretty weak.

Null,

AMD processors are just as good, and their dual core versions just as fast as Intel processors. The only difference: they're cheaper.

I know AMD had heat issues that were pretty bad in laptops. Have they fixed that? If not I would not touch one. If they have then yeah an AMD is a nice proccesor for the money.

As far as Vista goes 1GB ram is ok but yeah 2 would be nice. Vista is most definatly faster on IE7 than XP is so if your going to spend some serious time on the web go with Vista, just be prepared to learn how to turn off alot of unwanted security features.

Just my 2 pesos

Considering I haven't posted in a week, you light in the loafer fucker, I figured it was time to give you lefties a shot.

Ok serious question. If You wanted to try out a semi elegant Restaurant out but didn't have someone to take with You. Is it OK for a single felle to go to that Restaurant and try it out?? or is that kinda uncouthed?? Just curious.

Larry Mohr

Larry, if you are considering Applebee's or Ponderosa, you can eat at the bar.

Yeah WisGod it is Applebees. So it's not uncouthed to eat there just not at a Table but at the Bar ok makes sense. Thanks for the 411

Larry Mohr

You're entitled to your opinion, Null Set. Most retail stores sell laptops made by Compaq, HP, Acer and other garbage companies. I have heard nothing but complaints about those brands and from my limited experience using them, I would never waste hundreds or thousands of dollars on their products when better brands are available through the internet. The fact that they may contain the same processors and other essentials does not mean that they are just as well-made.

Larry

I worked in a few restaurants going thru college (a few very upscale) and would sometimes see a single man at a table who bought something to read with him -- newspaper, book, etc. No one thought anything about him reading at the table and it might make you feel less awkward.

Often a single person (usually always a guy) would say they were willing to share their table and so the host would seat another person (usually another guy) who had no objections in sharing at the same table -- after getting permission. As a single guy the host would seat you at a table for two (the smallest a restaurant has). When you are seated then just tell the host (especially if the restaurant were very busy) that you'd be willing to share your table with another diner who was also there dining alone. Sometimes that works out for both persons. Uusually both people are willing to eat and converse with a stranger or they wouldn't go along with it in the first place.

"Most retail stores sell laptops made by Compaq, HP, Acer and other garbage companies."

None of those are "garbage companies." Their computers have the exact same components as Sony, IBM, Toshiba, etc. But if you want to spend more money than necessary, go for it.

Larry

Have you ever heard of these types of clubs -- you meet with a small group and they all go out for dinner simply to try out new restaurants. It's not a crazy single's scene, it's just people who want to wine and dine and do it in a group rather than by themselves. I had read about it before so I googled Kansas for you and this was a website I found. Looks like you eat, drink, and then critique the restaurant. At least you'd get a chance to try new places.

Not sure if this is near where you live but you get the idea. You can check around. That might be a good idea for you to try different restaurants in a group that meets a couple times a month and you wouldn't be dining alone and might meet some nice people.

Dining out meetup in Kansas

Thanks Chris. See I don't want to look out of place if I were to try out applebee's I mean My type of restaurant is usually some dive Good food and all but it usually caters to the lower runged individual. I'll give it a try and see how it all turns out.

Larry Mohr

"Most retail stores sell laptops made by Compaq, HP, Acer and other garbage companies."

Compaq and HP are one and the same.

Larry -

Go to Applebees. Bring a small paperback book just in case you feel awkward eating alone, and enjoy yourself. How do they know you're not some visitor traveling from out of town and are there on business. Don't feel shy eating by yourself and also do as I suggested and say you'd be willing to share your table.

Damn Chris thats 3.5 Hours away. Plus I have NEVER heard of that kind of eating. Sounds great. Wonder if someone has to be on the Higher economic scale to join. May try Wichita and see what they have. Thanks for the idear.

GOP's New Slogan Already Being Used To Market Anti-Depressant

Leave it to the tone deaf GOP to find a way of attaching themselves to this election cycle's "change" mandate that simultaneously reinforces the fact that their failed policies have messed up the world to such an inhuman extent that many Americans now live their daily lives in a state of free-floating panic and paralyzing anxiety.

In today's New York Times' Caucus blog, Carl Hulse reports that House Republicans have got themselves a brand-new slogan:

It looks like Republicans will counter the Democratic push for change from the years of the Bush administration with their own pledge to deliver, drum roll please, "the change you deserve."

What the GOP doesn't seem to realize, because they are idiots, is that "the change you deserve" is the registered advertising slogan of Effexor XR, a drug that many of you might have started taking as a result of all the...you know -- terrorism. (Hat tip to Bluestem for catching this gem.)

Effexor, also known as Venlafaxine, is approved for the treatment "of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder in adults." Its common side effects are very much in keeping with the world the House Republicans have striven to build: nausea, apathy, constipation, fatigue, vertigo, sexual dysfunction, sweating, memory loss, and - and I swear I am not making this up - "electric shock-like sensations also called 'brain zaps.'"

Its less common side effects are equally awesome in their appropriateness.
www.huffingtonpost.com

OK, so they blew it. How about: "GOP - Better than Soma and only five times more expensive"?

Larry

If that kind of deal -- trying out eating at new restaurants with a small group of people who like to do the same -- call the one in I linked you to and ask if they know of similar type dining clubs nearer where you live. I doubt it costs anything to join. I would imagine you just pay for your own dinner and chip in on the tip. Maybe it would suit your purpose just fine -- trying out new places to eat with others who want to do the same thing.

Larry -

Applebee's is in Wichita. P.F. Chang's can be interesting. Aubelo's Mexican food. (Both of those are close to Webb Road, sometheing like Webb and 13th, by a newish artificial lake.) There's also Picadilly on Rock Road. Macaroni's can be ok, too. I'm talking mid-level dining, not going to McCormick and Schmick (?) in KC, which is excellent seafood but very pricey.

Hey neat idear Doc Sarvis I will have to check them out and see how it goes. Thanks again.

Larry Mohr

Lemme know how it goes. I don't know what sort of food you like, but Applebees' oriental chicken salad is pretty good, and P.F. Chang's lettuce wraps (I like the soy ones) are nice. Old Town in Wichita has lots of restaurants you can choose from as well. Small town Kansas is not great for food, and I know KC/Overland Park/Lawrence/Topeka (where there's actually a terrific French restaurant called Chez Yassu---run by Japanese) are well off your usual beaten path. But Wichita is probably within striking distance. Good luck, Larry.

I eat lunch by myself pretty much every day and I am quite familiar with going to restaurants on my own. Olive Garden is great for sitting and eating at the bar, as you tend to get the unruly group up there and you can really get into the atmosphere.

But You see You are a Female. It's OK for a Female to do things stag but We Men well I just always thought it was uncouthed to go to an upscale restaurant alone. I'll give it a try however. Might go get a hoity toity looking Paperback and see if that helps.

Larry Mohr

Larry I just take the newspaper. It is delivered to my office every morning so I take it with me when I go to lunch. Noone bothers you at all when you are sitting and reading the newspaper, they just assume you are engrossed (which I usually am).

I always take a book with me if I'm alone and nobody cares. Bon appetite, Larry.

Larry

Bring a book

Bring your appetite

At Applebee's just dress "casual nice" as far as what to wear -- no ripped t-shirts, whatever.

and

Tip well so the waiter will be glad to see you the next time you show up : )

Enjoy.

still here but having a heck of a time getting a grip

God Bless
