I also didn't realize that teenagers were the same as children.

13 is still children.

I think it's safe to say many things have changed over the past couple of centuries.
People no longer throw their morning slop buckets out of their second story window onto the street below, they eat with knives and forks, and 12 and 13 year old girls are not given over as an appropriate marriageable partners by their parents for the price of a few shillings in their dowry.

Consider the average life span two centuries ago - maybe age 30 or so. Most children did not survive to the age of 5 even in the 19 century due to death in childbirth and childhood diseases -- hence the social acceptance of marrying at a very young age and having as many babies as possible. In ancient Rome the average life span was only around 20 years old. Even as late as the 19th century the life span was on average about age 40.

Let's just say -- times have changed and changed for the better in most ways.

Of course, knowing you, perhaps you wrote your commentary a bit "tongue in cheek"? (grin)

The American system is not based around justice or reason, it is based around "who can we punish?".

What nonsense-we have how many teen pregnancies every year?

At least this couple is sanctioned and supported by their families and community. But I don't ascribe to Chris's argument about life expectancy. Those "average" numbers have infant mortality and deadly accidents on the farm or in the mill added in. The real difference is that my grandfather graduated 8th grade and went out looking for a job.

Of course by today's standards he was ready for college.
