Estonian farmers have received tax notices for methane emissions from their cattle, the country's opposition party, the People's Union of Estonia, said on Thursday.

Ruminants produce large quantities of methane gas through belching and flatulence when they digest grass, which accounts for about 15-25% of overall gas emissions, according to different estimates.
A single cow produces on average 350 liters of methane and 1,500 liters of carbon dioxide per day.
"For Copa-Cogeca, an organization that unites farmers of the European Union, the information received from Estonian farmers came as a huge surprise, and they could not recall a similar precedent in any EU country," said the party's spokesman, Jaanus Marrandi.
No other EU country imposes a flatulence tax on farmers.
A year after joining the Kyoto protocol, authorities in New Zealand proposed introducing a flatulence tax saying that New Zealand cattle are responsible for 90% of the country's methane emissions and 43% of greenhouse gas emissions.

I am sure that now demand for those new plug-in electric hybrid cows will go up. Toyota will make a fortune selling them.

If memory serves me right, wasn't Estonia picked as the freest country in the world a couple of years ago? I am sure that now they will go down a few notches in the index, maybe a dozen.

It could be worse. It could be like a certain shopper bending over to get a couple boxes of Quaker Oats and letting one rip only to get up and turn around to find some gorgious looking woman wrinkling Her nose at You. Boy now THAT is embarrasing. Larry Mohr

I'd love a link to that, if you find it. Posted by BetelG A couple of years ago I had actually come across an index wit the list of countries. This is all I could find now: footprints.blogs.com I remember having posted that index to the DR.

Member- Thanks. That article lists every prominent right-leaning conservative/libertarian magazine praising the military dictatorship in Myanmar. Good find!

Thats what we need here in the U.S. a tax on cow farts. We can even appoint a one democrat to stand behind each cow and keep count. Bee Swell

Who gets the job of tax collector? Posted by CalifChris It's yours if you want it. You do have to take samples on 10% if the cows every week. The milk cows may be easy but watch out for the bulls. Someone told me they like the hang-down things petted.

Why would you, Sniper? You seem content with playing with your own. You do seem to have some proprietary interest in the uteri of others, though.

This will backfire. You start taxing farts you only create an incentive for illegal, bootleg farts -- like Canucks who smuggle in American cigarettes

Watch for the government regulations coming in Estonia, insisting that cow-food contain a certain level (high) of fart-inducing stuff!

I just want to know when the enviroinmentalists will start thinking this is a good idea and try to start taxing people's farts. I let go with a good one this morning that would cost me at least $5 in tax money... ...not to mention that I have a friend who would go broke if they taxed human farts. Hmm, I wonder if you could trade fart tax credits like they do with pollution credits? I know a couple of my female friends that could make a killing selling off their excess fart credits.

Posted by retnluvnit at 2008-05-12 10:26 AM | Reply | Flag: Flag: (Choose)FunnyNewsworthyOffensiveAbusive
JRGUINNESS, Yeah, but you'd better not make it a flat rate. We wouldn't want to overburden the farting-poor!

What I realy want to know is how taxing cow farts is going to cut down on methane. Seems to me it will encourage farmers to reduce the size of the heard, increase the cost of milk and beef steaks. I don't have a PHD so its just a wild-ass guess.
Posted by Sniper at 2008-05-12 11:07 AM | Reply | Flag: Flag: (Choose)FunnyNewsworthyOffensiveAbusive
It doesn't cut down on the methane--it is a carbon credit trade off. This is Gore's idea. SO kill, move or sell all the cows to another country. What a ridiculous stupid idea. Next it will be dogs and human farts. Murphy
Posted by MURPHY at 2008-05-12 12:12 PM | Reply | Flag: Flag: (Choose)FunnyNewsworthyOffensiveAbusive
Isn't it clear to all? This carbon thing is just another reason to tax. Cap and Trade dosen't do a thing for the enviroment, even if there was a problem.
Posted by Sniper at 2008-05-12 12:37 PM | Reply | Flag: Flag: (Choose)FunnyNewsworthyOffensiveAbusive
Yes--Sniper--it is a tax scheme that companies and owners of the cows will pass down to the consumer. Murphy
Posted by MURPHY at 2008-05-12 12:43 PM | Reply | Flag: Flag: (Choose)FunnyNewsworthyOffensiveAbusive
mur, I hope they do because if they don't they will go out of business and shazam, no cows. The real answer is to cut the size of government so they don't gobble up so much money without creating anything.

If methane is soooo bad, why don't we all start building digesters like they do in China? A digester takes in cow/animal feces and water and gives off methane (that can be captured and burned as a fuel that does not stink) and fertilizer. When we start doing that, I'll start takeing you liberal whack jobs seriously.

Seems to work well around large feedlots and even some landfills. I don't know about the don't stink part.
