Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Having welcomed their 17th child only last August, Michelle Duggar, 41, is now pregnant with her 18th, she announced on Friday's Today show with her family sitting around her. Some of the older kids from the Tontitown, Ark., family looked shocked, but delighted. Joshua, the eldest (he is 20), noted that the time seemed right. "I wasn't expecting that," he said. "But it's been nine months, so yeah."

I can imagine Ray teaching his kids to be good little capitalist wage slaves for corporate America.

Hahaha. I have my kids buying all the gold and silver they can afford.

It is a source of wonderment how Nulli manages to maintain his freedom from work. Where would he be without "socialist tax slaves?"

More like she needs to tie her ankles together for a couple years and give it a break!.

"Unless like you, they think of employment as slavery."

You're an idiot. I've explained this to you before. Employment as a capitalist wage slave is a form of slavery. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with honest labor. People weren't wage slaves in pre-capitalist times. They worked for themselves as artisans, farmers, etc.

Secondly, real freedom cannot be realized as long as people engage in necessary but unwanted labor. Leisure equals freedom, something that neither capitalists or Marxists seem to understand with their obsession with how the value generated by labor is distributed.

You are so locked into this 19th century model of industrial capitalism that you can't even envision a society where automation has displaced most necessary labor, the 20/80 society.

Employment as a capitalist wage slave is a form of slavery

Marxist claptrap. It's a voluntary contract.

Secondly, real freedom cannot be realized as long as people engage in necessary but unwanted labor.

You have to produce to survive. That means work. Even primitive societies had to work.

the 20/80 society.

The doomsdayers have a perfect record of being wrong. Just as bad as the Christians. It goes back to your ignorance of the concept of wealth. What you fear is a successful capitalist society.

Then I ask, wouldn't that free people from what you call "unwanted labor" as it has been doing since the 19th century? And this bothers you?

"The doomsdayers have a perfect record of being wrong."

That's funny coming from a doomsayer who daily predicts the Apocalypse.

What you miss, of course, is that it is not doomsaying at all to envision a society where 20 percent of the population can do all the necessary labor. That's a human achievement. Using technology to displace unrewarding manual labor is a good thing in the long run. Reactionaries like you that are so locked into this 19th century industrial capitalist mentality can't see it.

"Marxist claptrap. It's a voluntary contract."

Bullshit. You have the freedom to choose between corporate tweedledee and corporate tweedledum. You're satisfied with that. You think choosing your corporate master makes you free. Your conception of freedom is narrow and reactionary.

The difference is that my pessimism on our economy of based on sound knowledge of theory, history and statistics. It's reality.

Using technology to displace unrewarding manual labor is a good thing in the long run.

Then what's the problem?

Reactionaries like you that are so locked into this 19th century industrial capitalist mentality can't see it.

It seems to me that it is Marxism that is based on 19th century mores. I see a future with unlimited supplies of energy. I see artificial intelligence close to matching human intelligence. An 20/80 society would be impossible without them. So I don't see what you are talking about with this 19th century mentality.

You can choose self-employment or starting your own business. You have the freedom to quit jobs you don't like. I've had good employers and bad employers.

Employers have to compete for employees as well as compete for customers. That's had a major impact on improving employment conditions.

So much more important than thinking about how the fuck you are going to feed these useless morons when you are engaged in overpopulating a planet.

"My target is what most libertarians have in common -- with each other, and with their ostensible enemies. Libertarians serve the state all the better because they declaim against it. At bottom, they want what it wants. But you can't want what the state wants without wanting the state, for what the state wants is the conditions in which it flourishes. My (unfriendly) approach to modern society is to regard it as an integrated totality. Silly doctrinaire theories which regard the state as a parasitic excrescence on society cannot explain its centuries-long persistence, its ongoing encroachment upon what was previously market terrain, or its acceptance by the overwhelming majority of people including its demonstrable victims.

A far more plausible theory is that the state and (at least) this form of society have a symbiotic (however sordid) interdependence, that the state and such institutions as the market and the nuclear family are, in several ways, modes of hierarchy and control. Their articulation is not always harmonious (herein of turf-fights) but they share a common interest in consigning their conflicts to elite or expert resolution. To demonize state authoritarianism while ignoring identical albeit contract-consecrated subservient arrangements in the large-scale corporations which control the world economy is fetishism at its worst. And yet (to quote the most vociferous of radical libertarians, Professor Murray Rothbard) there is nothing un-libertarian about "organization, hierarchy, wage-work, granting of funds by libertarian millionaires, and a libertarian party." Indeed. That is why libertarianism is just conservatism with a rationalist/positivist veneer."

What an imagination! My engineering specialty is factory automation.

A different mode of distributing income will be necessary in a society where most workers are superfluous.

Hayek coined the term "spontaneous order" to describe distribution from the individual level. In other words a true free market without government interference. Central planning has proved over and over again to be incapable of managing a complex market society. The root cause of the coming depression has to do with the failure of central planning.

I'm not a fan of central planning. I would rather use market signals, when possible, to determine production targets. That being said, the modern corporation is nothing if not a bureaucratized, central planning institution on a large scale.

Nonsense. It's easy to explain. Politics is religion by another name. Like priests, politicians offer more than they can deliver. They use the same brainwashing techniques to keep the masses under control.

To demonize state authoritarianism while ignoring identical albeit contract-consecrated subservient arrangements in the large-scale corporations which control the world economy is fetishism at its worst.

With what military? The history books are replete with empires that deteriorated into bankruptcy and tyranny long before corporations existed. Whatever police power corporations derive, it is through the agency of State. The argument is silly.

Funny. He says that every time I embarrass him.

And they often fail. When corporations fail, their losses are compartmentalized. When governments fail, the whole nation suffers for it.

Baloney.

That was easy.

On point, you haven't refuted that statement at all. The state and capital are symbiotic, and always have been. You're like someone that explains phenomena they dislike or can't explain as "aberrations" or "anomalies" that don't undermine the model.

The masses look to the State for protection. Famous thinkers like Hobbes, Mill, Marx, Plato, Aristotle and Locke wrote on that theme.

Religion has persisted longer than the modern nation-state. That doesn't prove it delivers what it promises. Same for the State.

The State is parasitic in the sense that it doesn't produce anything. Beyond some basic services, it is a consumption expense. Our government now consumes more resources than are available to sustain it. That is another way to explain the coming economic collapse.

Both religion and statism will persist as long as the masses maintain faith in them.

So you agree with me that modern corporations are bureaucratized, authoritarian, central planners. Excellent.

Hey Zat. Credentials mean nothing when you can't explain the jargon you post. You're too retarded to argue with. You need another cat.

"The State is parasitic in the sense that it doesn't produce anything."

Well, if you discount spending that creates value. Where did the Internet originate?

On the other hand, any kind of pre-State entity like a priesthood was not possible until an economic surplus could be produced. To call the State parasitical, rather than a co-partner in capitalist development, is absurd.

So you agree with me that modern corporations are bureaucratized, authoritarian, central planners. Excellent.

I've seen them evolve into mini-governments over the decades.

Still, central government is the parent corporation by means of its complete monopoly over its borders, a monopoly backed by police and military force.

The Corporations derive their cartel powers through the central government. This began as far back as, I think, Elizabethan England when the queen granted monopolies.

I've been telling you this for years. People demand economic security; which is why laissez-faire is impossible. It always, and rapidly becomes regulated whenever implemented. People actually like unemployment compensation and workmen's compensation and social security, etc. They want security even at the expense of sacrificing potential greater returns in a privatized social security system. They don't want to engage in casino capitalism.

The fact that libertarians can't recognize this reality about human behavior is why you will be forever irrelevant.

Well, if you discount spending that creates value. Where did the Internet originate?

It doesn't miss every time. But on the whole, when bureaucrats are spending other people's money, they are not as prudent as an entrepreneur risking his own money.

Then we have to remember that the State takes its money by force and it does not have to make a profit. That gives the state the license to waste money on misadventures that the corporations don't have.

On the other hand, any kind of pre-State entity like a priesthood was not possible until an economic surplus could be produced.

That gets at the heart of what creates wealth. Only voluntary trade can do that. Because of the coercive nature of government, all it can do is redistribute wealth which in effect, destroys wealth.

To call the State parasitical, rather than a co-partner in capitalist development, is absurd.

I was talking yesterday about the State and the corporations as partners in crime. It makes both parasitic. That partnership is at the root of the coming Depression.

People demand economic security; which is why laissez-faire is impossible.

As far as popular support goes, I agree. That doesn't discredit the theoretical model of a perfect voluntary society. The model serves as a reference for understanding why coercive (socialist) societies fail.

The fact that libertarians can't recognize this reality about human behavior is why you will be forever irrelevant.

I can't speak for other libertarians. For myself, I strive to understand how societies work as a mechanic would understand how cars work.

What "fortuitious confluence of circumstance"? You mean she gets pregnant each and every act of intercourse? That her va-jay-jay is permanently distended? She is unnaturally producing more children than she could possibly mother effectively. Fertility does NOT equate "biological superiority", not even in the quickly replicating world of insects and rodents.

Those kids.. how embarrassing.

Reproductive freedom works both ways. So why are the libs so pissy today?

They do breed like trailer inhabiting rabbits don't they.

Question, if the average family has a hard time stretching their hard earned dollar to buy all the things they need, then what is the deal with this family? Do they get "help" from "anyone". ? Are taxpayers in that state subsidizing these people?

This lady is just 41 years old?

Figuring she can still have kids to, say, 50 years of age, how many more children is she gonna have? Maybe 4 or 5 more?

Question, how much of a CARBON FOOTPRINT is this family causing?

I dunno. They home-school their kids. So what's $6,000 a year times 18 kids? Seems to me the state of AR is already up $108k a year, just because they don't like public schools. Bet this family still pays plenty in property and sales taxes, though.

Just because the kids of a lot of liberals grow up to be wards of the state doesn't make it true for everyone.

A lot less than you'd think. If you have 3 or more qualifying children, the additional child tax credits are capped at the difference between Social Security Which means that after 5 children, there are no more tax credits available to anybody, period. Which means that this family is no more a drain on the taxpayer than a family of 3 living on welfare.
Feel better now?

Oops.
Meant to say, the difference between Social Security taxes paid in, and Earned Income Credit payments received.

"Which means that after 5 children, there are no more tax credits available to anybody, period."

That's good, but better yet let's limit it to 2 children. In fact, get rid of it completely. There are already deductions for dependents.

I do not encourage, live and let live is my motto

Like i said they broke the mold when they cast you you turd.

Sick fucking turd.

When the reasonably (third grade level?) literate righties run out of steam, which is usually pretty early, we have the RisR and RWD cretins calling their betters turds, commie traitors, whimps, pussies, douchebags and totalitarians, if I remember them. I even think RisR spelled totalitarian correctly. What we DON'T get from these apostles of responsibility is an explanation on how it does the world good to have 18 children. Content really is too much to hope for from these people. herm

Seems like some people will begrudge families their children. But as odd as it may seem in the West to have large families (and it is odd in the West, because the average average family in Europe has only one child (or a fraction above that)), but take a look at the parts of humankind that are "less civilized" than the West and count their children. The least developed parts of the world and the Muslim majority parts of the world are averaging far more children than the rest of the world. In Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and the Gaza Strip, places where the population is doubling every 16 years because of the high birth rate, a woman of 41 years with 10 or more children is not as odd as a woman of 41 with just one child!!!

It's a difference perspective, and, if my math is right, if Europe's women don't start having MORE than 1 child per couple, Europeans will lose their continent to their guests of different cultures and backgrounds by the end of the 21st Century.

Dhiminitude of their own making.

It's the underwear.

Well, the burgeoning populations of lesser breeds without the law will outstrip the numbers of civilized folk who don't procreate, and transform the landscape so that everyone is operating at a third world level.

The idolatry to democratic modes will enable the more numerous third worlders to take over the governance of what was once the Western world.

First the West allows the third worlders to enter the West and settle there. Then the give them "rights." Then the Westerners blithely proceed without any sense of what is to come if the trends continue. Leave yourselves to the gentle ministrations of the thrid worlders once they obtain control of government apparatus.

Be thankful to this family doing its part in the name of civilization. There is nothing in the article to indicate anything other than an intelligent group operating in concert to advance their welfare.

This group has worked to offset the childless, and possibly sexless Westerners that cannot or who say they will not reproduce. This family is heroic in fighting the good fight in the name of truth, justice, and the American way. Every indication is that it is a family of well above average people.

We are an overpopulated world. But this family is not the problem. The increasing population of third worlders is the problem.

"lesser breeds"

Damn hominids.

... 18 Precious Little Persons (PLPs). Down Syndrome, grist for the Repub war mill, using up precious oxygen. Nothing cute or funny about it. Please don't encourage 'em any further. herm

herm, do you consider yourself an "elitist?" I suppose so. You support Obama don't you?

Using up precious oxygen. Somehow you elitists believe that you're more "worthy" and better entitled to breathe the air of this planet than each of these 17, going on 18, children.

It seems that to date, they are all "good stock."

Would you prefer there be 18 welfare supported babies born to women with fetal alcohol syndrome?

What gives with you people? This family is an illustration of eugenics in action, an improvement of the breed. You seem to prefer the proliferation of people of low intelligence, and who cannot maintain themselves, people who show little promise, as preferable to the healthy offspring we have here.

As to all you people with a prurient interest who are speculating concerning the condition of her vagina and uterus, don't worry. I'll bet the farm that you never would gain access. Why is it a matter of concern or comment for you? How is it relevant to your situation? You are just going to extremes in trying to find ways to criticize a decent self-supporting and self-sufficient group of people.

There are few things as pathetic and pitiful as those isolates who enter old age without having any children, any generation to succeed them, any sense of belonging.

How many of you commenting on the size of this family are yourselves childless? Oh! Ashamed to say because you are biological dead ends?

Two

College educated.
One Magna Cum Laude and in grad school.
The other has a BA in Art from Rhodes and her own studio.

And they have way more than enough seed money.

Barring massive nuclear war, there will be survivors. And the survivors will be educated and have assets; And luck.

Poo happens.
But, to a great extent, you make your own luck.

And my wife has two kids as well.
One's a "mom" with two kids (She's very smart and deadly serious about it) and the other's an archaeologist, just like his dad.

Our four will leave more than they take, or die trying.

Nobody gives a hamster praise for having 18 offspring so why should this pig (human) be treated any differently?

"This family is an illustration of eugenics in action, an improvement of the breed."

I always hate myself if I ask "Johnson" to explain something, but what the hell: J, explain!

Do I consider myself an elitist? Alongside you and the rest of the right-wing illiterates, without a doubt. Evolutionary processes will prove me right, although perhaps not in my lifefime.

The number of my children (2) and grandchildren (5) is utterly irrelevant to these views. herm

Yikes!! That hurt, man! But I don't think I'm pathetic being that I have no bio-kids.

FTR, I was once married to woman with children, from a previous marriage; she was incapable of bearing more. Do I have regrets? Perhaps. She had issues, which is why I am single now.

"How many of you commenting on the size of this family are yourselves childless? Oh! Ashamed to say because you are biological dead ends?"

Ouch again!

But yeah, perhaps I am a "biological dead end." I don't stress over it. Some breed, some don't. Perhaps some shouldn't be allowed to breed.

If this is what this family has chosen to do, if they can handle it (and they obviously can), and raise decent human beings, more power to 'em.
