How Farm Subsidies Harm Taxpayers, Consumers, and Farmers, Too

Couldn't agree more. End it. Ethanol too.

End Corporate Welfare of ANY kind.
If they want to make more money-they can either sell MORE widgets-or-BETTER widgets.

It is an impediment to capitalism.

I notice Redneckville hasn't chimed in on this thread yet. I wonder what's keeping him?

Must be cashing his government check.

I'm not an expert on subsidies and don't pretend to be one but I do know that ANYTHING from the Heritage Foundation is suspect and most likely completely dishonest. It should not be forgotten that it was the Heritage Foundation who supplied the ready stack of resumes for ideologues to run the Iraq reconstruction effort and we can all see clearly how well they handled that.
I do know that the US pays less than half the amount in subsidies that the European Union does and produces more food. I do know that droughts and other natural events can make farming a very "iffy" business. I also suggest that when computing farm income you have to consider that the figures quoted in Kerrin's article include subsidies so that farm income would be about 20% lower without them. I also know that food has been cheap in the US for many years and we had virtually eliminated hunger in this country and subsidies were a big part of that. Playing with the formula which has brought abundance especially during a time of rapidly rising costs is possibly a recipe for disaster.
