Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Country music singer Gretchen Wilson has a mantel full of awards in her Lebanon home. She can now add, at age 34, a high school diploma. She said of her seven-year-old daughter, "I certainly don't want her to think you can be this successful without an education."

That's cool!

Is there a correlation between intelegence and being a successfull entertainer? That is where we place our values.

We bitch about big companies that furnish the gas we burn in our cars for making huge profits yet we pay entertainers big bucks for creating nothing. Go figure.

country singers go to high school?

wow.

all the best.

Wow. A new low in cluelessness.

"Is there a correlation between intelegence and being a successfull entertainer?"

You dumb sumbitch, you misspelled two words asking the question.

WOW! I'm clueless because I think an engineer is worth more than a football player or a singer. Go figure.

Let Me state for the record. This must be an achievement for Gretchen Wilson. I am NOT belittling Her one bit. I myself have a GED. It is not because I lack the grey matter necessary to complete High School. I believe it was due to the fact that I didn't give a shit about school and saw it as a joke. Well the Joke is on Me I am afraid cause a GED is basically useless as far as Jobs go nowadays. If You don't have at least a HIGH SCHOOL Diploma You aren't worth jack shit and more often than not they want at least some college of some sort. I fault No one for this except for Me 100% I am the one who fucked up My life cause I didn't apply Myself when I had the chance. Kuddos to Gretchen Wilson however for completing Her GED certificate.

Same here.

My old man was on his own at 14.

To be 14 again ...

But graduating was trivial, Larry.
It required zero effort.
I was reading quantum mechanics and cosmology when I was 10.

Oh wait, ... Johnny Wheeler just died.

I guess there are no more black holes.

Being a successful actor, singer, or athlete is great, but what does one do if they should lose their voice, or the ability to move on the field or court? One does need an education, and I am glad that Gretchen felt the need and desire to set an example for her daughter.

We can only lead by example, so now her daughter can see that her mom accomplished something other than a hit record and can look up to her. As our children should look up to us and we can be their heros instead of some athlete or singer/actor.

You play bass.

I'm not joking.

Joe had throat cancer. Finest voice I ever miked.

I was chief engineer of KOKE back then.

"While earning a degree in American Studies from the University of Texas, Gracey began working in FM free-form radio. Here he became the first rock DJ to play Willie Nelson's music when Atlantic Records sent him the first pre-release copy of the Shotgun Willie album. He was also the radio advertising producer and voice of the Armadillo World Headquarters. In 1972 Gracey, Armadillo head honcho Eddie Wilson, Willie Nelson, and others concocted the idea of a "progressive country" radio format and approached the management of KOKE-FM with it. However, KOKE-FM decided to hire a different Program Director and Gracey later joined the station, to become its highest-rated disc jockey. In 1974 KOKE-FM received the "Trendsetter of the Year" award from Billboard Magazine for its Progressive Country format. In 1975 Gracey assumed the Program Director's role, and stayed there until 1977.
"

What fun it was.

Ok Zat...being able to fall back on bass is good but I truly believe having an education is the absolute best fall back any one invidual can have.
It opens the door for much more. ...
It's like I used to tell my son when he was growing up being a celebrity is wonderful, but what good is it if you can't read and do math so that you know can ensure that your people are not ripping you off... Education is a priviledge and there is no reason in this day and age for anyone to go without one.. I don't care how fast you can dribble and how hard you can dunk a ball.. or how many touch downs you can score...Or how many high notes you can reach, but you better be able to keep up with what you are making and be certain no one is robbing you blindso that you will be able to keep what you have made for yourself..

My son's Bachelors degree is Magna Cum Laude.

My daughter's BA is from Rhodes.

They are both extremely debt-free.

Joe just happens to be one of my very profound experiences.
I last heard him play bass at SXSW.

Have a picture:

Congrats! My son has one more semester left and I can't wait for it to be done!! What more can a parent ask for?! and the best part is DEBT FREE!! Alot of kids today just don't understand that is something to be thankful for. My son will also be debt free upon completion of his BA!! Unlike most of his friends they are leaving/left college with college loans and major credit card debt...

Back when I was in college we didn't have credit cards, It was cash and carry or you just didn't get it. By the time students graduate these days they are so heavily into their credit cards they have to work two jobs if they wish to eleviate the debt in a hurry.

yeah - actually i knew that though, oohrah, i just went for the easy joke.
and there are several others, i am sure - tis just that most country performers aren't known for the intellectual value.

i saw kristofferson perform when they were filming 'a star is born' here in phoenix years and years back. streisand performed a couple of songs that day as well to a tape machine.
trying to fit in with the young crowd, she was dropping f-bombs. that was awkward as you could feel the failure from the crowd... what a voice, though.

all the best.

NO!

Really?

So was Bill Clinton.

So fucking what.

Willie Nelson ain't got no degree.
He never 'took a shine for no book lernin'.

Pomona College reunion was last weekend.

Zat, sometimes I think may you're a bit self conscious about something. You're always posting your long list of accomplishments like you're trying to compensate for something.

Is there something you want to tell us?

It's a thread about a country music singer who finally got her GED. Nobody gives a shit about hearing your story of how you built a radio station with your bare hands, two paper clips and half a stick of Wrigley's Spearmint, MacGuyver.

Good for Gretchen! I know several people who dropped out of HS, regretted it and busted their butts to get a GED while working full time jobs. Good for all of them.
