Iron Man hauled in $100.7 million during its opening weekend and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, the second-best premiere ever for a nonsequel, according to studio estimates Sunday. The film also scored overseas with $96.7 million in 57 countries where it began opening Wednesday, putting its worldwide total at $201 million.

A good movie. It will critique from some quarters because---

1) Tony Stark overtly brands the military-inustrial complex as evil, to be avoided even at the expense of national "security".

2) A Muslim is portrayed in a sympathetic and heroic light.

What a dumb summer popcorn movie. Anyone trying to read any significance into it is an idiot. On the other hand, it was fun.

"1) Tony Stark overtly brands the military-inustrial complex as evil, to be avoided even at the expense of national "security".

Not neccessarily, his main concern is that his weaponry is going to places it shouldn't be going to, ei. being sold under the table to said terrorists.

I have to agree with Spiderwolve. I just got in the house from seeing the movie and the message wasn't anti-government. On the contrary, one of Tony Stark's closest trusted friends is a military commander and the one secret government agency portrayed is an ally.

If Zed believes that the movies is anti-military or anti-government then he either didn't see the movie, or saw a different version of it from everyone else.

All in all, the movie was fantastic. It was great seeing ole metal-head on the big screen. Robert Downey Jr. actually surprised me in his great portrayal of Stark. My only complaint is that they didn't have more fight sequences. The movie seemed long in the setup and drama, and the introduction of the villain came relatively late in the film. Oh well, I am sure it will be better in Iron Man 2.

All in all, though, it was well worth the $10 ticket price.

Haven't gotten to see it yet.

I'm looking forward to four movies this year.

Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Batman and the new Star Trek.

Spud is so gonna see this one.

Prolly tommorow.

By all accounts it RAWKS!

Sweeeeet!

Jon Favre directing Robert Downey Jr as the millionaire/ death merchant/ scientist Tony Stark who sees the light and becomes a force fer good despite being troubled by inner darkness and alcoholism?

Woo Hoo!

Also Gwennie Paltrow is pure YUM!

Be Well.

awesome movie

downey should've won the academy award for chaplin.

i really can't knock pacino getting it for 'scent of a woman' though he's done better work elsewhere.
so sad.

all the best

I downloaded it but haven't watched it yet. Downey was great in the Zodiac.

Having been a fan of shell-head for most of my life, I was very impressed with the film. It did have some anti-millitary aspects to it after Stark's epiphany. While he was most upset regarding the fact that his company was double-dealing arms, he DID still state that he would not be manufacturing them at all. His reasoning was clearly stated: the weapons he made did not just kill the enemy: they killed innocent people, regardless of who was using them.

Now, one thing that irritated me was a major plot device regarding the board of directors: Unless something has changed in the last 10 years (I did stop following Iron Man about that time because of a TRULY terrible storyline), Stark International is NOT a publically traded company in the comics. The entire plot device could have been re-written to take that into account, but I think the writers either didn't know that fact, or didn't think the audience would understand it.

Finally, for those of you who haven't seen it (or have, but didn't realize this), you MUST stay after the closing credits.

Saw it this weekend - perfect escapism. I loved it. Excellent cast too.

I attend these movies to spend an enjoyable 2 hours NOT thinking about what is going on outside the movie theater. My husband and I totally enjoyed this movie because it is highly entertaining, engaging and Robert Downey Jr and cast were terrific, the special effects were fabulous and we just had a great time! I don't analyze these movies. I just enjoy them!

All right, all right - I also go for the popcorn.

'Iron Man' Opens with $200 Million Weekend

$200M isn't what is used to be.

A while back, I think in Comedy Central or something, there was a program where at the end they would give boxoffice totals in Italian with the Italian Lira which was worth I think 2000 to the U.S. dollar. The totals were huge, in the billiones I think but of course, it was quoted in worthless Liras.

200M American pesos is not that impressive anymore.

Has he lost his mind?
Can he see or is he blind?
Can he walk at all
Or if he moves will he fall?
Is he 'live or dead?
(Has he / Icy) thoughts with in his head?
We'll just pass him there,
Why should we even care?

He was turned to steel
in the great magnetic field
When he traveled time
for the future of mankind

Nobody wants him;
He just stares at the world,
Planning his vengeance
that he will soon unfurl

Now the time is here
for Iron Man to spread fear,
Vengeance from the grave
kills the people he once saved

Nobody wants him;
They just turn their heads
Nobody helps him
now he has his revenge

Heavy boots of lead
drills his victims full of dread
Running as fast as they can,
Iron Man lives again

Hollywood makes nothing but left-wing propaganda films now. I only watch foreign films and TCM {Turner Classic Movies}. Some of those were propaganda films too but they were trying to help us winn WWII.

Sen Joe McCarthy was right, Hollywood was full of Commies that needed investgation.. The communists are still there and we need another meeting of the House Un-American Activities Commitee.

Somewhere between 2.5-3 stars...great entertainment, Downey is pretty good.

My kids and I enjoyed the movie, though one of my sons informed me that he's not as enamored of super-hero movies as I am. I believe this was a roundabout way of calling me a dork.

My favorite relationship in the film was between Downey and a mechanical arm like the one that builds cars.

I wish I had known to look for a cameo from Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie in A Christmas Story. That film is greatness.

You sir, are a total retard.

So much FAIL it hurts the eyes to look directly into any one of yer postings.

Sen Joe McCarthy was right

McCarthy's primary concern was identifying and acting upon Communist spies who had infiltrated the the government, like Alger Hiss - a well documented spy who many lefties ferociously defended despite an ever-growing mountain of evidence.

In addition, McCarthy gets tagged with the activities of the HUAC, an entity that he had very little to do with, in reality.

A fair amount of the criticisms against McCarthy are apt, but some are overblown or downright disingenuous.

Personally I can hardly wait for the Indiana Jones, X-Files and Hellboy movies! In addition to the Batman and latest Will Smith blockbuster, that is.

SPUD,

The truth hurts, like looking directly into the sun. Therefore I am issuing sunglasses for all libs, dems, lefties and commies who read my posts.

fwthom, I don't need sunglasses for your stuff, just a pooper scooper and a frontal lobotomy.

Don't you need to go do a 'wide-stance' in a restroom somewhere?

Iron Man was probably may favorite comic book character as a kid. I hope the movie is good. A lot of the comic book movies have flat out sucked a la The Hulk, The Punisher, Daredevil, et al.

Sin City was awesome, though.

Was funny watching it with a Hungarian crowd and Hungarian Terrorists come on the screen. Came as quite a big surprise to the audience. Hungarians are far more concerned with getting pussy, getting drunk and cheating on taxes to waste time in Afghanistan.

You have to be in a culture that forbids alcohol and pre-marital sex to become a fanatical terrorist. Absolute opposite in Hungary.

maybe it does, but what you said was dumb

dumb != truth

furio

one thing to note

this is the first hollywood movie
that when they spoke urdu... it sounded like pakistanis speaking urdu (cept for the good guy in captivity with tony stark-i think was on purpose though)

when they spoke arabic, they sounded like arabic speakers

i can't tell you other languages but i would hope for the same.

the translations were off, but that is sometimes needed.

Yeah, but Vernon's lips are so soft, and he gives a wicked blow job, especially if he takes his dentures out.

Bring on the Avengers!

"The movie seemed long in the setup and drama, and the introduction of the villain came relatively late in the film."

I haven't seen the movie. It looks pretty sweet in the previews. But I have to say I think most of these movies spend way too much time on the origin story at the expense of showing the superhero kicking the shit out of super-villians, which is what most people want to see. Fans of the character know the origin. And the casual fan doesn't need or want to see every detail of how the hero came to be. They want to see a good action flick.

I was the perfect age for the first Superman movie when I was a kid and thought it was boring. Any seven year old already knew where Superman came from.... Not only was there hardly any conflict in the movie but Lex Luther was portrayed as a clown. The 2nd was much better because it had real villians.

Downey was great in the Zodiac

Yes he was. After seeing that flick I couldn't get Hurdy Gurdy Man out of my head for a week.

Jon Favre directing Robert Downey Jr as the millionaire/ death merchant/ scientist Tony Stark who sees the light and becomes a force fer good despite being troubled by inner darkness and alcoholism?

Except that the film isn't entirely accurate about Stark. It takes a while before he "sees the light". Regardless of the minor inaccuracies here and there, I thought the movie was good. I got a kramer of it off the net, so I'll have to go to the theater to actually enjoy it.

Something I've always wanted to see done with comic book movies might actually take place. Crossing story arcs from one character to another. Since they all live in the same "universe", it only makes sense that the Incredible Hulk and Iron Man bump into each other. Downey Jr, as Stark, makes an appearance in the new Hulk movie from what I've seen. And then there's the hint of an Avengers movie too.

There's only three more movies I really want to see this year, then the way for The Watchmen starts. Man I get impatient about these things.

As far as I am concerned, until this summer, no Hulk movies have been released.

As for the punisher, a friend and I always end up talking about it. I have two examples for what The Punisher should have been like. One is A Man on Fire. The other is Boondock Saints, sans holyrollerness.

Daredevil was on the other day and I couldn't bare to watch it. I used to like it, but now Afleck makes my brain hurt.

afleck sux in everything except view askew films
