Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Andrew Sullivan: It is for many in the Obama camp an unthinkable thought. But politics is sometimes the art of adjusting today to what seemed inconceivable yesterday. I'm talking about the possibility -- and the powerful logic -- of a unity Obama-Clinton ticket for the Democrats. I hesitate to propose this, but I do think it is now worth actively considering for the first time in this campaign. The test of a president is his ability to recognise his own weaknesses and adjust to them. If he can do that while strengthening his core message, and make his own election close to unstoppable, what would hold him back?

Right now its almost like none of the above. Hillary and Obama are bickering and appear too vulnerable to swiftboating. On the other hand, the charisma deficit on McCain isn't making him formidable.

Blase!

Maybe fireworks will begin after the Dems make up their mind and when McCain memorise certain memorable lines.

"when McCain memorise certain memorable lines."

If I see that cranky bastard paste that most insincere of smiles on his mug and murmur "My dear friends" one more time I'm going to fish Luca Brazzi out of Sheepshead Bay and see if he has any ideas.

My Dear Friends SMILES

No. The Clintons can't help but get in scandals. It's what they do. Obama knows plenty of old things (Clinton pardons, fundraisers, lobbyist connections) that he didn't have to throw at Hillary, but he doesn't want to have to defend for her, either. Plus, there's a thousand soundbites from this spring of Clinton hitting Obama that he doesn't want rehashed.

Obama's VP pick should be Kathleen Sebelius. 24 years of elected experience. White woman of a certain age (within a year of Hillary). Catholic. And, most importantly, not Hillary Clinton and in no way connected to any Clinton-era scandals. Another woman on that convention stage will be a hell of a heartbreaker to Clinton, but I think it's the stronger ticket.

Sebelius is a very interesting possibility. Getting elected governor of Kansas was no mean feat, and getting re-elected clined the deal: she's a winner, tough, articulate. A woman on the ticket seems like a winning idea, but can Sebelius even deliver Kansas? (Odd, if she was unable to carry Kansas in a topsy-turvy repeat of Alf Landon's inability to keep FDR from taking his state.)

The idea of having those two ego fools plotting behind Obama's back is a non-starter for me.

The Clintons look ever more like the Bushie mentality.

In this election we are talking about a Bush III regime versus at least the possibility of real change.

If we lose some or a bunch of Clinton supporters then we will have to pin our hopes on a newly energized youth vote and lots of help from Independents.

"We will have to pin our hopes on a newly energized youth vote..."

Not to sound overly cynical, but that bloc of voters is inordinately predated on election day by beer bottles and video gamees.

" Kathleen Sebelius"

ROFL! You think Katy can deliver KANSAS for Obama? Plus, she's the most uninspiring pol out there. I don't even want to hear what that little wussy Andy Sullivan has to say. He's a freakin' Repug....why does anyone listen to him? He HATES women.

I sincerely hope Hillary would turn down any offer from Obama. He's going down in flames in November. I wouldn't want to be associated with it.

I don't think Sebelius "delivers" any state. Maybe she makes McCain spend money in Kansas. Maybe she campaigns in Ohio (her father was Governor of Ohio). Depends if you consider that a good strategy (wasn't that the rationale with John Edwards?). I guess Webb or Kaine make some sense if you really think they can "deliver" Virginia.

I think trying to heal some intra-party rifts is probably the first order of business.

Here's the Classic quote:

"Remember Kennedy-Johnson?"

And do you remember how that turned out?

Personally I don't think Michelle is going to go for it. She's the one who picked the church, and Obama didn't become a member until they started dating. The fact that one of Clinton's surrogates (not just a supporter) resurrected Rev. Wright and propped him up in front of the National Press Club to stir that pot will not be forgotten.

Never mind all that CiC test, and the other crap Clinton has tossed into the campaign, she attacked Michelle's church.

It's as simple as ABC. Anyone But Clinton.

"And do your remember how that turned out (Kennedy-Johnson)....?"

Yes, we won that election. It would be nice to win this one.

"And do you remember how that turned out?"

Obama will be ok if he stays out of Dallas.

Obama-Hillary would be a dream ticket. I couldn't imagine anything better.

Obama needs to pick a white male from a big state. It's that simple. America may be ready for a black man, a white woman, but not a black woman which is what an BHO/HRC ticket would be viewed as.

Hillary anywhere on the ticket would translate into a McCain win.

You'll love the 100 year war in Iraq.

BO/HC ticket:

The demographics Black, White, Hispanic, other, women, men, old, young, conservative, independent, liberal, and green voters, gun owners, gun haters, pro& anti abortion, military, anti military, religious, anti religious, communist, socialist, radicals, coupled with a unifier and a divider, new politics, established political class, internet money, corporate money, relative youth and lack of Washington experience, relative age and years of Washington experience, Clinton's toxicity, and Obama's hope, give the dems...

"The Reagan Democrat states... enough independents to carry the Mountain West and the upper Midwest....California, Ohio, New York, Florida and Pennsylvania"

What's left for JMC...right GB's 20% plus...

Vince Foster is dead set against an Obama/Clinton ticket.

Possible but HIGHLY unlikely! Do you see Obama playing second fiddle to Bill (if bill's the first man vice president?)

Some HC & BO supporters have said they would note vote for the other if their choice were not the nominee. There is little chance of a mass defection with both on the ticket.

"Politics makes strange bed fellows."

Barack-Hillary would take every state but Utah and Idaho even if McBush resurrects the dude on the cross as a running mate. I would hope that party loyalty transcends whatever enmity those two have developed because humanity really cannot tolerate four more years of Republican tyranny. herm

I would hope it could tolerate Clinton treachery and Obama inexprience.

Send me a postcard from Guyana, boys.

I would not vote for any ticket that Hillary was on.

MMike you're right.
As distasteful as the Obama/Hillary ticket would be to most Obama supporters and to many here on the DR, and probably to Obama himself, Its an easy winner.

TIGERBALM...agreed but where will the pressure come from to make it to happen?

"I would hope it could tolerate Clinton treachery and Obama inexprience."

The Goat and I discuss Texas in another thread. Here we ought to limit ourselves to Clintonian "treachery" (I presume selling out on welfare and health care) and Obama inexperience, which surely rivals what JFK had upon assuming the White House reins. Goat, I will take either, with mustard and relish, over McCain senility. herm

I'd vote for them but I'd vote for any of the Beach Boys (alive or dead, sane or otherwise) over any republican.

I was reading some of the earlier posts regarding possible VP candidates and I saw the name Kathleen Sebelius. I went to Wikipedia to look up some more info and I found this:

Kathleen Gilligan Sebelius.

Her maiden name is Gilligan?

Many on the right still have orgasms making fun of Senator Barack Obama's name, can you imagine what will happen with her? Obama will be the skipper and she'll be his 'little buddy'.

Other than her name, I liked what I saw. She seems very qualified to be a VP.

Maybe I miss your meaning, but HRC a black woman ?
Not now after pretending all these years to like Blacks.

Put her name on the ticket and tell her to shut the fuck up?

Would Bill stay in NY or move to the VP mansion?
