China has secretly built a major underground nuclear submarine base that could threaten Asian countries and challenge American power in the region, Janes Intelligence Review reports. Analysts for the military magazine suggest that the base could be used for "expeditionary as well as defensive operations" and would allow the submarines to "break out to launch locations closer to the US."

I'm going to have to have some proof on this one. To my understanding, nobody can build that large an underground facility.

The BS alert is going off big time.

China has secretly built a major underground nuclear submarine base that could threaten Asian countries and challenge American power in the region, it can be disclosed.

CORRECTION...ITS NOT A SECRET SUB BASE ANYMORE

FLASH!
US RELEASES IMAGES OF SOOPER DOOPER CHINEE SUB BASE

I too can say-I announce this!! So what?

The technology to create such a vast underground area may or may not exist. I do not see the Chinese even as wacked as they can be some times, spending the amount of money that such an endeavor would take.

Why or how could such a vast undertaking be taken and brought to completion secretly?

When any power admits that China has done what this thread says then maybe we can agree it exists. So far-ZIP.

Please find a well known and accepted agency of the news or a major government to confirm just what does or does not exist. No, Uncle Lois' garage news will not cut it. Even if it is on the web.

First off theres all sorts of large underground man made caverns in the world.

In fact in much earlier times ancient chinese built one of the biggest.

By what estimate, and what facts indicate to you such a structure with a 60ft high entrance is not possible?

Second, who are you to say what the chinese can and cannot afford? If farming gold in WoW can be profitable I"m sure they can find the people to do it.

Janes? They are one of the most respected organizations for military reporting in the world.

The amount of US dollars that Walmart ships to china each week could pay for that base.

(And I'm not bashing Walmart here, just the idiots that shop there.)

60ft high?

"A host of aircraft carriers"

That is way different than 60ft. They can't be made in secret or even moved about secretly.

Last but far from least. This sounds almost like an "eggs in one basket" type of affair. We can now impact any location on this dirt ball to within several inches or less. We have nukes that can ruin that or any other facility.

Our most secure facilities (known ones that is) can not stand a direct hit or a penetrator. We have all of that and who knows just else?

Wal=Marts income wouldn't come close. This bitch would be trillions if possible at all. Think of a wet base totally covered(well covered) base that can hold what the article says. Me thinketh it ain't hapnin'.

The covered base is not like the sub pens built by Germany for WWII. The Germans were trying to keep our bombers from sinking the subs at the pier.

This is about keeping prying eyes away. Our spy satellites are good enough to see thru some pretty thick roofs (think very fancy radar), but this mountain should do the trick. Also, we have mini-subs that have snooped in some unbelievable spots. This might defeat those, too.

I am pretty sure the Chinese know that a few Tomahawk missiles would seal up the entrances fairly easily. Whatever they are building/hiding there would be deployed well before the bombing started.

AXE-You don't really have any idea just what apx capabilities a major power has today do you?

How do you get aircraft carriers underground?

A little OT, but has anyone else seen this water wheel? It is an alternative to canal locks. A clever bit of engineering.

www.glasgowarchitecture.co.uk

It is actually quite simple to get an aircraft carrier underground, Goat.

Simply find a suitable deep water port that is adjacent to a decent sized mountain. Dig a big ass cavern in the side of the mountain at water level with a depth sufficient to float the carrier and a height enough to allow clearance for the superstructure of the carrier and the prevailing tides. Drive carrier into the cavern....carrier is now underground. How far underground depends on how high the mountain is and how far you dig into the side of said mountain.

Not exactly new or cutting edge technology. The Germans did this in Norway during WWII.

It is not even all that expensive, notwithstanding Military Man Keith's estimate of "Trillons". Even the North Koreans have the technology.

I don't think they need to house their entire fleet, just a few at a time while they load 'cargo'.

Duh

Distilled reality: We blew it big time; Long ago.

LeMay was right.

The sell-out to China, Nixon's one real achievement cynically corrupted, was the Clinton's.

The sell-out to the lobbies was the Republicans.

But "Sold American" was written years ago.

Here's to the survival of human DNA.

AXE-One more time. Reread the article-this is a huge facility(alleged)- However, none of the major powers would give it that much thought. It like anything else can be overpowered if needed.

Question=How do you load an 80ft long missile into a sub that sticks up into the air say 10 ft. Now there has got to be some crane clearance and suddenly the ceiling just had to get higher. We shouldn't even go into carriers, that might add a small amount more.

It was of course totally hidden from the orbiting eyes, of course-a complete surprise.

Do you think maybe not?

Keith,

Reread the article and look at the accompanying photo. They show the construction barges at the entrance in a 4 year old photo. OF COURSE this is no surprise to anyone except the media.

As far as digging a big hole, a space that large would be a lot of work, but completely within the scope of 100 year old technology and a large labor force, let alone modern tunneling and excavation technology.

You really show your ignorance here.

60', and the water line's at the bottom. What are you going to get through that tunnel? It's a curious image.

Ah, America. Ever in search of a new enemy on the horizon to keep the Military-Industrial Complex fed.

Not a word of this as yet on other news media. Do you think they would totally ignore this?

Yav-the tunnel is totally above the water-maybe the Chinese subs have wheels too?

the tunnel is totally above the water

That may be a dam built in front of the tunnel opening to keep the water out while the tunnel is being constructed. Once completed, the dam will be removed allowing the tunnel to be flooded. That's just a guess, of course.

American Military Authorities have always taken a kind of solace in the fact that Red China has never undertaken to develop a fleet of Aircraft Carriers from which they would be able to project their power in order to back up their "diplomatic" efforts in the same way the US has and does.

See: Persian Gulf.

That sed, the "Heathen Chinee are a particularily tricky people".

In the meanwhile, they have swept ahead of the US in terms of building faster and quieter attack subs than the US.

Recently, Spud recalls a story in which a Chinese Sub made it's presence known in the middle of an American sub excercise. It showed up out of nowhere and then fucked off in a way that they were not able to be caught up to.

This wasn't an accident.

It was the PRC's way of saying: Don't Fuck With Us, Round-eye!

When Nixon signed off on the "One China" policy it set the seeds for the eventual end of democratic Taiwan.

Nixon got a much needed photo op in the midst of the Vietnam War debacle and tons of media cred fer his "ping pong diplomacy" and China got exactly wot they wanted in terms of long range goals.

China obviously had closely observed the US routine of crushing existing socialistic governments who were at least somewot responsible for their peoples interests and then installing corrupt and brutal dictatorships who crushed unions and offered sweetheart deals to multinationals who were mostly US based causing a flight of capitol to the west.

China called Shenanigans on that action.

The opening up of China has not led to the masive external outflow of capitol to foreign companies as has been the case in far too many parts of the world and thus they are in a far better position to commit resources to these kinds of long term projects.

While America has used the international drug trade (under Reagan/Bush I) and, more recently, the exagerated threat of terrorism (Bush II) in order to further perpetuate the Pentagon system of massive public spending on military systems they have for the most part ignored the growing threat of an actual non third world entity that is very real and growing.

Wotta bunch of fuckin' morons sez Spud.

Neat story Zat!

Be Well.

/Not really here yet.

spud

yeah...that great American system works fairly well until China grew up.

I will buy it when it comes to Harbor Freight. Probably be cheap.

The arrogance of this Bush Administration, has made the need for the Chinese or some other power to balance the Power in this World.

I like every American would like our Country to be a World Super power, but the past 7 1/2 years have proven that we cannot be trusted with the sole ownership of that power.

The Bush Administration have proven to the World that we, America, cannot be trusted to do the right thing. As for secrets from the Chinese how much as Americans know about AREA 51???

Celisary,

..and you think the Chinese can be trusted with 'that power'?

I don't know the extent of the sub base described in this story, but I do know that the Chinese have operated from Hainan for decades. While I was attached to a navy patrol squadron, we overflew and photographed the consruction going on in the late 50's and early 60's. We flew in and out very quickly at very low altitudes. Chinese personnel would pour out of buildings shaking their fists.

"SPIDERWOLVE"...The statement was Chinese because the article was about the Chinese. The statement also said or another power. Clearly what would make the balance of power work the other side have to be the ENEMY. An no the Chinese would not be my first choice, an maybe I don't even have a choice just that we have proven not to be the right ones...
