Sen. Hillary Clinton on Monday called on President Bush to stay away from the Olympics opening ceremonies in Beijing, a fresh sign that politics, not sports, may take center stage at the summer games.

"Senator Clinton. You sat on the board of Wal-Mart Stores from 1986 to 1992. Wal-Mart's imports from China increased by over 25% each of those years, and quadrupled over that time. What was your reaction, and the reaction of the board, to the events of Tiananmen Square in 1989?"

I guess that's just business, though.

Let take care of America's dismal international record first...

Maybe she's afraid W will run into a few of her campaign donors.

If this were anyone else I'd say it was just political opportunism -- trying to capitalize on the Tibet protests. But we're not talking about a typical politican. We're talking about Hillary! Hardman Clinton.

Ok, let's all PRETEND, once again, that HRC is a viable leader who deserves to have her opinion heard.

Do not use the only thing in the world that is about humans with no political bearing (the olympics) to further a political agenda.

Anyone care to rememeber where we were during the 36 'Hitler Olympics'? We didn't boycott those and if some needed to be boycotted it was that one. Instaed we went and killed Hitlers ideal of Aryan Supermen.

So?

Sometimes it is hard to tell who is the most like Jimmy Carter--Obama or HRC?

Where is my husband?

Are those Bullets?

How come that guy in Ireland does not like Me?

Is there anyone else I have to fire?

Did I ever find the whitewater files?

Did I really get fired?

This idea of skipping the ceremony but not the games is one of the biggest pussy moves I've ever heard of. If what China is doing is so terrible then back out of the games all together. Skipping the fruity opening isn't going to do anything to stop China from acting how they are...

If we do this, do we skip the closing ceremonies too?

This idea of skipping the ceremony but not the games is one of the biggest pussy moves I've ever heard of.

Wow. Spud actually agrees with Rob.

Backing out of the opening ceremonies for show while continuing to support the games in every other way is a pure pussy move. Another case of political lip service being paid to placate the angry crowds while "big business as usual" continues to steamroll ahead.

Spud hoping the folks in Frisco today manage to embarrass the Choinese even more than the French did yesterday.

"Ah din't even know skippin' was an Olympic Event' Ah'm gonna dig out mah cheerleadin' outfit and practise and win me a Gold Medal, cause I've pretty well toasted the dollar as far as mah retiredment goes."
GWB

We skipped the Moscow Olympics for Afghanistan, but we weren't on the $$ hook to Russia like we are to China. Can't piss them off too much, we got a war to pay for and they're the only bank that honors our IOUs.

Christ almighty...I agree with Rob. What a lame cop-out move.

If I were an athlete who'd spent my entire life trying to become the best at my sport, and waiting for the one chance to prove my worth on a recognized international stage while in the prime of my athletic life....then some opportunistic political figure comes out and says that due to some unrelated "hot" news topic of the day (and the attention it could bring their campaign by addressing it), I should not be able to compete or engage in recognition events at said stage? How about go f yourself you self interested twit! Talk about changing the rules in the middle of the game. She has no sense of reality anymore...only smelling that sound-bite in the daily news cycle.

And shit or get off the pot. Stop pretending that boycotting the opening ceremony is going to do anything but make our athletes look like whiny little bitches with a half-hearted "agenda".

This is something everyone ought to be able to agree on. And it should be the extent of the protest unless PRC commits even greater atrocities.

**** Clinton: Bush Should Skip Olympic Ceremony ***

.....when Bush first heard the suggestion, he got his skipping rope out of the closet......

Boy I am glad to see at least the folks here on DR didn't all fall for this media propaganda campaign! Yeah, the Tibetan issue is important but there are ways to do things.

So is this really about Tibet, or just an oppportunity to embarass China? The International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted to allow China to host the games, in other words the international community agreed to it, and they all knew all about the Tibet issue. How long has the world known China was hosting? The IOC should have been held accountable and relentlessly challenged from Day One to present. Or is this just a charade that has a little to do with Tibet and a lot to do with embarrassing China?

If it was just protestors, cool. But certain politicians and the mass media, on an obvious preset cue, kick off a choreographed propaganda effort. Most pathetic of this group, Nancy Pelosi, the leader of the keystone cop, 11% approval rating dumbocrat congress, with her laughably insincere plea to support Tibet. I don't recall her making any calls to boycott Chinese products at Walmart though. She needs you to spend your stimulus package check there.

If the Dalai Lama was worth a bag of shit, he'd make a call to stop holding the olympics hostage for his cause.

Hilarious, pathetic, but oh so very predictable...

She's really pissing off the real "left" of the dem party...by not calling for a full boycott!

What does obama think???????

How a numskull like Hillary can survive the political process to become one of the top three presidential contenders should serve as a warning to how incompetent her rivals are.

After wrecking Iraq and Afghanistan, an Olympic boycott of some kind is somehow supposed to mean that this country occupies the moral high ground.
