Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Iraq's Prime Minister was staring into the abyss today after his operation to crush militia strongholds in Basra stalled, members of his own security forces defected and district after district of his own capital fell to Shia militia gunmen. With the threat of a civil war looming in the south, Nouri al-Maliki's police chief in Basra narrowly escaped assassination in the crucial port city, while in Baghdad, the spokesman for the Iraqi side of the US military surge was kidnapped by gunmen and his house burnt to the ground.

Well, why wouldn't they falter. Look who trained them.

It can be argued al-Maliki's forces feel they have the option to fold because the American Army is their de facto ally in this civil war and will stop things from unwinding too far.

The surge is dead, and pretty much on schedule. RIP. Go ahead and make Iraq the 51st state. I'm almost certain we wouldn't spend so much money and trouble to save, oh, North Dakota.

Meanwhile on the red state blogs, no talk about the sudden renewed nastiness of the war. Perhaps it will just take several days for them to digest it all, in the manner of a snake eating a rabbit.

My idea? Same as always. Republicans aren't really interested in the war. They're interested in their dreams about the war. It's more like Dungeons and Dragons for them than anything else.

Abu Iman barely flinched when the Iraqi Government ordered his unit of special police to move against al-Mahdi Army fighters in Basra.

His response, while swift, was not what British and US military trainers who have spent the past five years schooling the Iraqi security forces would have hoped for. He and 15 of his comrades took off their uniforms, kept their government-issued rifles and went over to the other side without a second thought.

i presume these are the weapons we provided them. Pretty amazing how our predictions keep coming true.

just keep an eye out for reneweed shiite vs sunni violence. that will be the sign.

I said it years ago, I'll say it again. AlSadr needs killin' and his Mahdi army destroyed. There will not be any unity or semblence of peace in Iraq until both are GONE. Kinder, gentler military operations just don't get it. Destroy Sadr City, raze it to the ground. Kill AlSadr. Completely wipe out the Mahdi militia.

jsg you do realize you are talking 10 to 20% of the Iraqi population, correct?

Shhhhh.....

Don't tell Chick Norris or Anglena Jolie... they beleive the serge is werking. And who says actors are dimwits.

The continuing Saga of making Bush 41 look like a genus.

Have to agree with you jsg they should have wiped them out when they had the chance earlier on. 20% well they all have a choice either lay down the arms or die! that shouldnt be to hard for them to understand now should it.

"Well they all had the chance either to lay down the arms or die...."

I'm sorry---What portion of the Iraqi populace do we want to die today? It seems just like yesterday it was the Sunnis. Wait, that was yesterday.....

Just think, if we had followed neocon advice to carpet bomb Sunni neighborhoods three years ago, the folowing would be true today---

1) We'd have no Sunnis left to pay-off.

2) The Shia would have had no Sunnis to ethnically cleanse.

We Will, In Fact, Be Greeted As Liberators'
-Cheney Five Years Ago

"That shouldn't be hard for them to understand, should it...?"

The weirdest thing about neoconservatism is it's talent for misunderstanding it's enemies.

When it's time to recognize how culturally different the Iraqis are from us, you insist on seeing them as Americans.

When it's time to recognize that the Iraqis are, after human beings, you treat them like Martians.

I began to understand what the Iraq war might be like when I considered Iraqis might react like Texans sometimes.

If there were 150,000 Iraqi troops occupying Texas, I can promise you there would be a 100 year war in Texas--Regardless of how nice individual Iraqis were found to be.

The liberal Texans would be making the IEDs and the conservative ones placing them along roadsides. Later that night, everyone save the Baptists would get together for a Shiner.

"After all human beings...."

Make that Shiner Bock.

"If there were 150,000 Iraqi troops occupying Texas, I can promise you there would be a 100 year war in Texas--Regardless of how nice individual Iraqis were found to be."

Honest, succinct, and right-on-the-mark.

Hans

"Later that night, everyone save the Baptists would get together for a Shiner."

And if you made sure there was no more than 1 Baptist per gathering, EVERYone would be having a Shiner.

"This is a Defining Moment" -George W. Bush

I'm waiting for Weird Al's new song "I'm a genius in Iraq."

Isn't this how the Tet offensive began?

That is the dumbest comment I've ever seen posted here. Not to mention a direct insult to our forces. And you wonder why we say that liberals are against our military when they say they aren't. And you wonder why we say liberals really do hate America. It is because it is true. Your comment just helped prove that.

What could be better than this???
100 years of this!

Why do you libs continue to lie and take McCains statement out of context? Oh, because you ARE liars. Use your google, Danni, and read the actual context of that remark. I know you won't though becuase you choose to live in a haze of liberal lies.

Glad to see the good guys are winning. I hope the militias start really kicking ass. We need to highlight the republican failures

"What could be better than this???
100 years of this!"

Actually that's incorrect. He said he wanted 1000 years of war. :)

And you wonder why we say liberals really do hate America. It is because it is true. Your comment just helped prove that.

Yeah, that one comment proved it beyond all words.

Idiot.

You are either simple-minded, or an adolescent - liberals "hate America"? How f-ing stupid. Tme to turn the radio off and start thinking for yourself.

cause here on short attention span theater things were quiet in iraq for months and months and this is some kind of suprising development.

yes america has no adhd

Saboteurs also blew up one of Iraq's two main oil pipelines from Basra, cutting at least a third of the exports from the city which provides 80 per cent of government revenue, a clear sign that the militias -- who siphon significant sums off the oil smuggling trade -- would not stop at mere insurrection....

After awhile your eyes glaze over when you hear story after story in Iraq
of militia fighting, more bombs going off in this village and that city. But this news is quite serious.

We not only have Shia fighting Sunnis (you remember them, the two MAIN groups of Muslims in Iraq that neither Bush nor McCain can yet figure out which one is which) but we now have Shia fighting Shia.

We should have taken out Hojetoleslam Moqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi Army more than two years ago. Why is he still running around in Iraq?

Not only is the new major operation in Basra (apparently suppose to have been another Fallujah) stalled but the insurgents have apparently regained control of Baghdad! What a mess.

Iran is Shia. Soon, if not already, you will have Iran's Shia unite with the Shia in Iraq and we will be looking down the throat of a united Shia militarized front that will spread over the borders of Iraq and out across the Middle East.

In WW II the U.S. simultaneously fought the countries of Japan and Germany in two separate theaters of war. Our enemies each had a fully trained and well-equipped army, navy, and air force and had spread their military fighting forces across Europe and throughout the Pacific.

Yet we defeated both Japan and Germany and ended WW II in LESS TIME than it has taken Bush to still unsuccessfully try to gain control of only one city (Baghdad) in some third world Middle Eastern country (Iraq) which has no army, no air force and no navy.

So now we have spent more than 5 years -- without success -- trying to fight not a fully equipped opposing military but an unorganized group of militias consisting mainly of teenage boys armed only with suicide belts, snipers, and shovels used to bury IEDs along the roads.

It is not because our military is not capable of winning. They are now being allowed to win. We are still fighting this endless war in Iraq because politicians like Bush and Cheney -- both chickenhawks themselves who refused to fight when they were called upon to do so -- will not let our generals on the ground fight to win.

The politicians are calling the shots -- not the generals -- and every decision that Bush and the Neocons make re the war in Iraq is not based on what's best for our military but instead based on their own political and personal economic benefit.

4000 dead U.S. military and no end in sight.

error

...They are now being allowed to win

should have been

...They are not being allowed to win.

Al-Sadr to followers: Don't lay down your arms

BAGHDAD - Anti-American Shiite militia leader Muqtada al-Sadr ordered his followers Saturday to defy government orders to surrender their weapons, as U.S. jets struck Shiite extremists near Basra to bolster a faltering Iraqi offensive against gunmen in the city.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki acknowledged he may have miscalculated by failing to foresee the strong backlash that his offensive, which began Tuesday, provoked in areas of Baghdad and other cities where Shiite militias wield power.

Malarkey is widely viewed as a puppet of the US by the Iraqi people.

Mostly cos he is.

Al Sadr, luff him or hate him, is seen as being more legitimate than Malarkey.

Al Sadr proposes a ceasefire and largely sticks to it.

Malarkey, upon the urging of the US, attempts to fuck with sed ceasefire.

Shit meets fan!

Now Malarkey is sayin' "Nobody coulda imagined..."?

WTF?!

If it weren't for all the dead bodies piling up that would be almost funny.

Such a surgerific success is this shitstorm.

Be Well.

Mr. Maliki's forces may also have lost ground in the battle for public opinion when, in a well-publicized event in Sadr City, 40 men who said they were Iraqi police officers surrendered their weapons to Sadr officials, who symbolically gave the officers olive branches and Korans. The weapons were returned after the officers pledged not to use them against Mahdi Army members.

"These weapons are for defending the country but not for fighting your brothers," said Sheik Salman al-Fraji, head of the Sadr office there.

I see the training given by Bernie Kerik is really paying off.

Question: how do pilots tell extremists from non-extremists from 3,000 feet at 300 mph? Perhaps they are wearing orange vests that make them easy to target.

One more time!!!

According to our Supreme Commander in Chief,

"The combat is over the war has been won"(I know not exact)

Nothing to see here, move on, nothing to see!

I'm sure if the traitors in the Fifth Column hadn't prevented Bush from spending another $2-3 trillion on this effort the situation in Iraq would be pretty rosy by now. Y'know: Flower petals and chocolates filling the air. Thanks to all those who enabled this idiot by voting for handing a dry drunk a blank check to make war.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki acknowledged he may have miscalculated by failing to foresee the strong backlash that his offensive,

straight from the neocoon handbook

gents as bad as these recent developments are they are not as bad as thing could/will become. the battle between the Shia is less of a direct threat to US forces as sunni vs shia conflict. The sunni insurgents are much more apt at attacking US forces, their insurgency are much more effective in an anti-coalition role. Everytime we have faced off against sadr we have wiped the map with his militia, they fight more stand up type fights which our firepower will prevail.

things will be really bad when we start reading abouit car bombs and bodies showing up in the streets with bullet holes and driling holes in their heads. that means the shia and the shia are back at it.

it will be interesting to see how the sunni react to this violence vis a vis american forces. with some luck they will stay on the sidelines, if not we are back in 2005 after the golden dome was blown up.

you think things cant get worse, imagine if a truck bomb blows up sadr, that will blow up iraq

Two of many (in)famous lies that have cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives:

"The enemy is in its last throes."
Dick Cheney, 2004(?)

"Normalcy is returning to Iraq."
George W. Bush, 2008

further proof that 50% of the Right has an IQ under 100.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki acknowledged he may have miscalculated by failing to foresee the strong backlash that his offensive

Graduate of the Condi Rice School of Stupidity. No wonder Bush picked him.

"The U.S. Embassy tightened its security measures, ordering all staff to use armored vehicles for all travel in the Green Zone"

What the Fighty Rightys like John McBush see as a sign of victory. Are they all senile or just stupid?

Yes, Northguy, the answer is yes.

I dunno, buts its my gut feeling that this Sadr thing has something to do with a U.S. strike on Iran.

The administration knows that if they do anything to Iran, then Sadr is gonna make life horrendous for soldiers stationed in Iraq.

I give the whole thing ten days.

remember the funny thing in all this, america is now fighting on the side of the Supreme Coucil of the Islamic Revolution.

funny aint it.

The 'surge' is working - (until Al Sadr decided it wasn't)

Die you freedom seekers, Team America is in charge.

Not to mention a direct insult to our forces.

Any group can only achieve true greatness with a great leader. Who's the Commander in Chief of the US Armed Forces again?

We don't hate the US military. We actually respect them and can remember that they are human beings and not a "comma". We pity them for the way they have been abused and used as a personal play toy. No wonder they are incapable of true greatness.

Who's the Commander in Chief of the US Armed Forces again?

Nouri al-Maliki

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki acknowledged he may have miscalculated by failing to foresee the strong backlash that his offensive...

Sure he saw it

"Plans to reduce British troop numbers in Iraq to 2,500 this spring have been abandoned on the recommendation of military commanders, UK officials say.

Nouri al-Maliki...also prime minister

Nouri al-Maliki's...brilliant move, starts a military campaign to remove his political opposition...have the US and British clean up for him...YANKEE GO HOME (domestic consumption) can't be far behind even though he won't mean it!

one step forward, two steps back, that's the way you spell "SUCKsess". I think GWB should be forced to work as a security guard in Iraq when his term is done. Actually, it's more like "our" term.

almost dont believe this response although I dont know why...
as I have said before. we are just pointing out ways and things that your side says that makes it look like all of you are people who would just love to see us lose and hate this country because of nonsense that comes from your side. and if you cant see thats different than what you said then you have no business calling anyone stupid.

and here is a question based on the latest information. so they are getting thier ass kicked and its all a waste of life and time is it?
so then why is sadr NOW wanting to stop the fighting and get amnesty and all thats being reported this morning????? is that a position you take when you are winning? or losing?????
