The two said they were asked if they had marijuana, told to empty their pockets, struck on the head, threatened with a gun and told to stay off the block.

Were they illegal? If so the judge needs to be thrown in jail for not having them detained and deported.

It's not surprising that this happened in Luzerne County, PA - just a few miles from the city of Hazleton, the 1st city to enact anti-illegal immigration legislation. Like Walt, I wonder if these guys were illegals or not - the article doesn't say. Since that area has seen lots of illegal immigration growth over the past 6 or 7 years, I wouldn't be surprised.

CChris, on a slightly related note, last month I had the opportunity to interview Mayor Barletta of Hazleton about his city's ordinance. He actually had a lot of good stuff to say and some interesting facts about i.i. in his town. I briefly thought about you as I met with him as he wants to be as tough on illegal immigration as you seem to be!

Since that area has seen lots of illegal immigration growth over the past 6 or 7 years, I wouldn't be surprised.

I did some checking and cannot find anything that says whether or not they were illegal. The fact that it was not stated does not surprise me one bit. We have become far too tolerant of the people who are invading this country by the millions and committing crimes on our soil daily.

We are blind to this problem and Bush and the rest of Congress is to blame. McCain bears almost as much responsibility as Bush. As a staunch conservative I do not know whether or not in good conscience I could vote for him, even if it means by not voting I have enabled either Hilary or Oblahma to win.

The only person with a chance in hell to have done something to fix this problem was Huckabee.

We need to build a wall and build it now. Donate money to the Minutemen or volunteer and join the battle. We also need to stop electing NAU/SPP traitors into office.

They would have jobs and could afford their own pot.

If they can't speak English and have no proof of residency or citizenship then I think it should be assumed that they are illegals and they should then be treated as such. Same goes for employees on job sites, if they can't speak English, can't provide any proof of citizenship....send them back to Mexico and fine the employer heavily.
If a bartender can check IDs and be expected to make sure the person is the one on the ID, in the darkness of a bar, and faces serious penalties for not doing so...then employers can at least do as much. But then....we'd have to have a government willing to enforce laws that their own constituents want ignored....as in the US Chamber of (American worker Hating) Commerce.

I know this was addressed to Danni but let me weigh in. If the bartender serves a minor, no matter how good the fake ID is he is still liable. Same should be so for bartender. Put the monkey where it belongs instead of in the lap of an undeserving.

I know you didn't ask me but the answer is the bartender IS responsible. At least in Texas they are. This is why they take certification classes to know what a real ID looks like. Obviously, there may be mitigating circumstances, for example if an ID is forged so well that even the judge couldn't tell the difference it would be hard to convict the bartender. But, in most cases they are responsible.

Now that I like. In Texas we have what is called the Texas Alcohol Board Commission and they do stings all the time using minors and it's bullshit. They are nothing but a huge money making scam in this state. They make their money largely from fines so you can see the motivation for them.

I don't understand your argument. Are you suggesting employers shouldn't require any identification for new employees, since they aren't trained in identifying forgery? If I recall correctly, all employers are already required to verify a Social Security Card and ID prior to hiring somebody (and for the W-4).

Personally, I think the burden should be on the employer to verify (in good faith) that a potential employee is legal to work in the state. I think requiring a basic background check would be a decent, inexpensive, requirement. If stringent fines and prison time was given to offending employers, they would loose the incentive to hire illegal immigrants.

My company pays around $30 to screen new applicants; we've turned down numerous laborers due to faked applications and documentation.

As it is, employers for the most part know when they're hiring someone who isn't eligible to work, they just look the other way because they know nothing will happen. If we require a more stringent screening of applicants and not let repeated offenders off the hook, things will change. But as long as "we" (as in all Americans) keep providing jobs for illegal immigrants, they will always find a way to keep coming.

If employers faced jail time and big fines, they'd be a little less inclined to hire illegal labor. This includes all those people who cruise Home Depot for cheap labor instead of hiring an actual bonded contractor who pays his taxes.

In Los Angelas it is just the opposite, they tell English speakers to learn Spanish and become bilingual. My coworker got fired because he didn't know Spanish.
