David Brooks: If Mitt Romney doesn't withdraw today then he's not the data-driven guy he claims to be. If he was going to ride to the GOP nomination on the back of the conservative base, he would have done better in the South. He would have won Missouri, not come in third. He would not have lost every single California county except Fresno, Sierra and Shasta.

I hope that none of them drop out and I hope that none reach the magic number. Having a brokered convention wuld be good for the party, maybe more in the long-run than in the short-term. A brokered convention would mean a (healthy) fight between the various factions of the party and this could help the GOP set a direction for the long-term future.

I don't see how the GOP race ends up brokered. Romney's loss in California should be the sign to either drop out or run a less confrontation campaign and start thinking 2012.

I just think that it is funnier than hell that the most Conservative candidate left at this point is the former Gov. of Massachusetts!!!!

I really like the fact that the Conservative movement in America is all but dead!!!

People can blame McCain or the Liberals but the Conservative movement has died in this country because Americans have seen it in action and have determined that the Conservative agenda is not in line with true American values.

As history has displayed, this country has always and always will continue to become more Liberal with each passing generation.

Hallelujah!!!!

The Conservative Movement has been dying since the so-called Republican Revolution. While in the minority, the GOP campaigned against Big Government, but then they started liking the power and influence way to much. Bush becoming president in 2000 made matters worse and even thought it semed (in the surface) in 2002 and 2004 that Conservatism was crushing everything Liberal in sight, the weakness were glaringly obvious. In 2006 the illusion could no longer be sustained and the 2008 electoral cycle was the final nail in the cofin because all the so-called "major" candidates were just plain awful.

It's been a slow death, only casual observers would say that it died now and that it's McCain's fault.

You should encourage your Conservative friends to read this:

www.drudge.com

It seems that all this is cyclical. The conservatives gain power because the liberals got power and abused it. Then the conservatives who now have power abuse that so the liberals gain power. Then they will abuse their new power and soon the conservatives will be back.

Power corrupts.

Logically, no Missouri + no California = support McCain.

sometimes you have to swallow the bitter pill and just deal with it.

Romney really just ran too negative of a campaign (even though most of the accusations are true) to pull this out. Ask Hillary about how the negative thing is working for her? People just want positivity at this point, which is why Obama and McCain are surging.

One of the comments under Brooks article was "what's the difference between me and Mitt Romney? I didn't have to spend 35 million to find out I wasn't going to be President."

Hang in there Mitt, we all need the comic relief. Maybe Mitt could challenge John to a marathon race for the nomination.

"The conservatives gain power because the liberals got power and abused it."

I don't think that is true. I would need to see some "abuses" of power by the liberals.
I think the conservatives gained power because of changes in how we receive information. With the rise of talk radio, cable news, etc. corporations have been able to "sell" their ideas on their own stations, networks and newspapers. When the majority of Americans received their news via newspapers it was much harder for corporations to control because of the vast numbers of owners of those newspapers. As consolidation has allowed corporations to own more media and control the message better and better they have continued to increase their power and further the conservative agenda to the point that they finally achieved thier goal of complete control....which unfortunately was such a total failure it is now being rejected in spite of their powerful media.

Two Conservative candidates (Romney and Huckabee) combined got 60%-70% of the Republican vote. McCain for weeks has been claiming that's he's seen the light and is now a Conservative too. (What did Paul get? 2%)

Guess you're right. Sure sounds dead to me.

I think it is fucking hilarious that the GOP jerry-rigged their nomination process in order to help Guliani (with the winner-take-all states), and now that malarkey is what is killing Romney's campaign.

Now Huckabee's conservative, Vernie?

Conservative movement is dead? Thats a good one guys. "Americans have seen it in action", with Bush? He is not a true conservative by any means.

Enjoy the Obama or Hillary nominee. It will be fun to watch, and hear about all the experiance they have, then wonder why democrats lose another election.

This isn't about Dems vs. Reps.

The fact is, CONSERVATISM isn't even in the race.

THAT alone is a victory for this country.

To think that we live in a country where a guy like Huckabee can win elections shows us the condition we are actually in. I simply can't imagine living in a state that could elect a guy who believes that the earth is 6,000 years old and that dinosaurs roamed with man - OR a guy who believes that the garden of Eden was in Missouri.

Ignorance must indeed be bliss in the red states.

"I simply can't imagine living in a state that could elect a guy who believes that the earth is 6,000 years old and that dinosaurs roamed with man - OR a guy who believes that the garden of Eden was in Missouri."

Or a guy who believes that the magical human son of an omnipotent being was sent to earth solely to symbolically die for our sins before coming back from the dead?

Or a guy that believes that after a carbon-based life-form ceases to function as a living entity, it is magically and contextually transfered into some after-life wherein it is judged by earthly standards?

Its all a bunch of wacky nonsense! Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.

from FORMERLIB: "...Bush? He is not a true conservative by any means. ..."

Oh he's not???? Then why did you bozos put him in power twice?

Did he lie to you? Then do it again?

It is a matter of convenience that you can sit back now and say that. But you fuckers made this guy.

What was it the chief idiot said?

"Fool me once, shame on you...Fool me t...Fool....Twice....You won't get fooled again...."

Every day that goes by you conservatives seem to reinforce the notion that you are all a bunch of...Morons!

This isn't about Dems vs. Reps.

Absence of conservatism is not what's good for our country. Absence of neoconservatism would be good for the country, no doubt.

So, what IS good for the country? Garnished wages in the name of universal health care?

Yeah, go big government! i was thinking we need universal veterinary care also. Maybe the government should make sure no pet goes without health care. Hell, garnish my wages for it!

So, what IS good for the country?

Signing statements?

Dumpling,
It seems that your logic is flawed. Just by the fact he helped gov't grow shows he is not conservative. Why did us 'fuckers' put him in office?

1. Kerry
2. Kerry
and
3. Kerry

Nice name calling in your post, show how intelligent you really are. Now get off the computter and go do your homework.

A bunch of morons that have effectively relegated you to the 21st Century "back of the bus".
Hows that feel bitch?

Now get off the computter and go do your homework.

Hell, he isn't in school. That would imply he has at least some interest in learning.

He probably buses tables.

"the Conservative movement in America is all but dead!!!"

???count the votes...surely even a few of the Mac votes were from cons.

As of this morning,
McCain has earned 615 delegates and 4,220,296 votes; Romney 268 delegates and 3,497,341 votes, and Huckabee 169 delegates and 2,232,530 votes.

Translation = 4 decades of marxist college education has given us victory. Hooray, we can all be poor and perverted together. Give us your children (we're going to take them by force anyway) and we'll cease to exist in another 2 generations as history has shown.

There are many paths to death. Not a difficult accomplishment.

I'd say put a sock in it but that's probably hate speech. So instead I'll just say good luck loosey.

"There are many paths to death. Not a difficult accomplishment. "

So Reagan slayed the evil empire....for nothing??

OH MY GOD!

Re: The conservative movement is dead ...

What conservative movement. There hasn't been one since Barry Goldwater, and we all know how THAT played out.

Ronnie Raygun led no conservative movement. He was a movie actor with a likable aw shucks grin and a technique for lulling Americans into a sort of narcoleptic trance with a stream of morning-in-America bullshit. He also destroyed a great historic word, "liberal," but that's another post.

As an intellectually challenged tool of the corporations, George W. Bush wouldn't know an ideology if he stepped into one at The Ranch.

Conservative movement? A handful of religious loonies, manipulated by corporate dollars, plus a handful of flag-waving war nuts without a clue as to what American tradition is about. herm

Here is my analysis for what MIGHT happen in coming days...I'm not predicting a Huckabee victory, but I am predicting that the race will change drastically in the next ten days.

1) Romney drops out this week or next week. He won't keep spending millions of his own money if he doesn't have an honest shot at getting the nomination. The stubborn Huckabee stands in his way and he won't keep throwing good money after bad, and possibly offending the GOP faithful (with his negative ads) that he'll need if he takes another shot in a few years. Add to this argument the fact that Mrs. Romney was not buying her husband's line tonight that "this campaign will go on." If you see the clip on the news at some point, watch the Mrs and you'll see what I mean.
2) With a headsup campaign between McCain and Huckabee, the issues and choices become a bit more stark. McCain faces serious and passionate opposition from the stalwart forces from the right within the Republican party. Huckabee will begin to gain a lot of ground once he's the only alternative to the moderate McCain.
3) Huckabee will ask for as many debates as he can get. Comedy shows, the GOP debates and Walker Texas Ranger is what made Huckabee what he is today. If recent history has told us anything, it is that the more face time Huckabee gets the more support he garners. I think the biggest reason he slipped in the polls in the last couple weeks is because the media thought the race was between Romney and McCain and didn't give him much camera time. Increased television exposure that will come from a one-on-one race will favor the Huckabee campaign.
4) If/when Romney drops out, his delegates are up for grabs. Who will get those delegates and who will the superdelegates favor with Romney now out of the race?

Fear the Neocons, they're running our country into the ground from both parties. Both sides need to trade in their 'my party, right or wrong' mentality, and seek out the candidates who aren't Corporate Puppets(NeoCons). You may have to find a third party candidate to succeed. But until we rid ourselves of these corporate one-worlders...it won't matter who elect. Greed will continue to rule.

Greed will continue to rule.

Cool name - are you a Buffalo Springfield fan, then? I read a good bio on Neil Young - it's called "SHAKEY"

Yes, love Neil and enjoyed the bio as well.

Time for a third party candidate to emerge --

Before it's too late --

LOU DOBBS FOR PRESIDENT 2008!

"What conservative movement. There hasn't been one since Barry Goldwater, and we all know how THAT played out."

Yep, I was the Air Force then and can remember the ad with the little girl pulling the petals off the daisy when the nuke went off.

It was 'vote for Goldwater and you'll have war', sure enough I voted for Goldwater and sure enough there was war!

Poor ole Barry would be called a liberal by today's standards.

One can only imagine how talk radio would tear him up if he were around today.

I believe Barry G began to become disillusioned with the Conservatives during the Reagan(another NeoCon) administration. I think it would be safe to say Barry's views,(and those of other old school conservatives), would be considered libertarian, and therefore, radical, by todays standards.

That's the kind of 'radicalism' this old Independent would love to see more of...less government, more personal liberties. I'll take freedom over fear any day!

Bush not a conservative? When did the "conservative movement" give damn?

You spent at least six years of confusing him with Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, Gandalf the Grey, and George Patton.

He was just a mediocre and far-from-nice man that needed a clue he never got from you because of your bizarre adolatry.

If there's any redeeming feature to this tragedy it's listening to the Romney folks condemn the Huckabee supporters for being fools and traitors.

The definition of "liberal", it seems, is much more elastic than anyone ever supposed.

It was 'vote for Goldwater and you'll have war', sure enough I voted for Goldwater and sure enough there was war!

Total points:
103 (Level 1) It's time for Romney to drop out of the race, if he's really a good businessman. He has spent millions and millions of dollars, more than McCain and Huckabee combined, and he has gained little support, and he'll not win either nomination or general election. Simply proven he has no chance whatsoever. Plus he is the type that will say whatever it takes to win, so all this come to nothing, that most people just don't believe his ad or his words. So what's he still doing here in the race? It's not like he's McCain's friend. Being in the race is basically helping out McCain. But it's possible he likes McCain secretly because they're both really librals. So I guess Romney will probably stay for as long as possible just to kill the real conservative Huckabee. Unfortunately, McCain is not going to appreciate him very much, because it's plain to see McCain simply doesn't like Romney, totally despises him. So what's he doing here helping out McCain? It's really high time for Romney to recognize that he has no chance, absolutely 0 chance to win the nomination or general election, and by continuing on with the race, he has the highest amount to lose, since if he doesn't pour huge amount into advertising, he simply won't have any votes. So basically he'll just have to squander more millions to benefit media. That's all he can do. He won't even be able to make a VP. Or I'd say he should throw in the towel right now, endorse Huckabee, and help Huckabee to become the nominee to beat McCain, and ask Huckabee to promise VP to him right now. This might be the best solution to everyone, I mean every party, except McCain. Since McCain doesn't like Romney anyway, why not try this solution out?

Anyone who thinks Romney who's really pro abortion and pro gay marriage as the true conservative is out of their mind. Romney has just 'changed' into a conservative because he's running for president. He actually is not one. Both Romney and McCain are basically not very conservative. The only one who's a true conservative is Huckabee. Those who hate Huckabee basically hate his strong personal faith. That's what it's all about. If he doesn't have such a strong living faith in him, then he'll be viewed much more favorably by many. It's sad to see what this country has become nowadays. Soon not only our children may not be allowed to pray, and must be given condoms and directions to the nearest abortion office, but they'll be given the encouragement that it's all dandy and fine to choose either a man or a woman for them to marry, both are great and equal! That'll be the kind of country we'll be living in very soon! If anyone who is a real conservative, choose Huckabee please! Fight immorality that's dragging down United States! And we're still wondering why we have so many problems... what do we expect? We do all these immoral things and expect to be blessed and have great fortune?!!!!
