JOHN EDWARDS will take South Carolina for the Democrats -- unless Diebold beats him to it.

South Carolina is the end of John McCain's 15 minutes of fame in NH.
Good to see Paul is included. Is SC a pure primary or do the Dems get to vote for the Repub candidate there too?? Murphy

Well there are three candidates going for the evangelical vote. McCain isn't one of them. Murphy

Murphy Is SC a pure primary or do the Dems get to vote for the Repub candidate there too? I'm neither a registered Dem nor Republican (I'm a registered independent) but I believe that SC holds two primaries. The Republicans hold their primary on Jan. 19th and the Dems on Jan. 29 (although they are trying to get theirs moved also to Jan. 19 in order to keep the media momentum going for them too). I don't know how cross-over party voting works in SC

What't the over and under on Rudy's use of "9/11"?

CC--you are going to get the Independent ballot here in CA when--or if you vote on Feb 5th. I did that one year--and very disappointed. So went and registered as a Democrat. I was thinking of changing to Repub for the primary--but the time got away and I missed the deadline. I am not sure if I can do it at the polls--probably not.. Murphy

Don't you that support the Republican Party feel somewhat uneasy that in the year 2008, your Party, as we will all see tonight cannot find someone other than all white toast cast to run for President? That stage tonight will look like a meeting of the Elks of 1950. The Democrats seem to find room in there Party for a Woman, An African American an until today a Hispanic....Please try and get your Party into the 21 Century..... The Women, the African Americans, and the Hispanic's in the Republican Party should for there own diginity ask for a place in the leadership of this Party...

"The Democrats seem to find room in there Party for a Woman, An African American an until today a Hispanic...." CEL Reminds me of an old line Archie Bunker had on All in the Family. He was commenting on the national origin of a local political ticket and said, "Tore, Feldman, O'Reilly, Nelson... That's an Italian, a Jew, an Irishman and a regular American. That's what I call a balanced ticket." www.ariga.com Now that I've found that site, here's another quote: "I'm not racist! I'll be the first to say it, it's not their fault they're colored!"

This is so old it is pathetic, hows about the first black secretary of state? or the first black woman secretary of state? or the first hispanic attorney general? How many minorities did Clinton have in his cabinet? (in important roles that is, not in dog catcher roles).

Huckabee spends three minutes talking about Americans struggling to make ends meet with rising costs driven by $100/barrel oil. Giuliani follows by talking about corporate taxes that ought to be cut. Classic. Wait to look out for the little guy, 9-11-dy!

the numbers in Zogby's latest polls, for all but Clinton and Obama, seem to have been dead-on the money for both the Republicans and Democrats. Edwards, for example, was polled at 17% in Zogby's poll, and he received exactly 17% in the MSNBC numbers, with 63% of precincts reporting. So are we to believe that only those voters who preferred Obama previously, decided to change to Hillary at the last minute? I suppose so. 1988: George HW Bush finishes third in Iowa and trails badly in NH polls. He goes on to win handily. 2008: Hillary Clinton finishes third in Iowa and trails badly in NH polls. She goes on to win NH. "Once, during the time when days were darker, I made a promise. Thanks, New Hampshire!" **George HW Bush in innagural address Who will make that speech on January 20, 2009? 286,139 - Machine vs Hand (RonRox.com) 09 Jan 2008 Hillary Clinton, Diebold Accuvote optical scan: 39.618% Clinton, Hand Counted Paper Ballots: 34.908% Barack Obama, Diebold Accuvote optical scan: 36.309% Obama, Hand Counted Paper Ballots: 38.617% Machine vs Hand: Clinton: 4.709% (13,475 votes) Obama: -2.308% (-6,604 votes) Jennifer Call, Town Clerk for Sutton confirmed that the Ron Paul totals in Sutton were actually 31, and said that they were "left off the tally sheet Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, the most outspoken advocate in the Presidential field and in Congress for election integrity, paper-ballot elections, and campaign finance reform, has sent a letter to the New Hampshire Secretary of State asking for a recount of Tuesdays election because of unexplained disparities between hand-counted ballots and machine-counted ballots. www.youtube.com If not for her 7% swing as a result of Diebold voting machines, Hillary would have lost to Obama. Numerous districts reported totals of anything up to 22% for "other candidates". What on earth does this black hole of "other candidates" mean? How can one vote for a candidate that is not on the ballot without spoiling the ballot paper? The district of Lisbon reported 22.5% votes for this mysterious "other" candidate, while in the large district of Londonderry, the "other" candidate received 10%. Many are now alleging that these "other" votes were merely siphoned from Ron Paul to keep his final number low. - Rudy Giuliani, the 9/11 candidate who beat Ron Paul thanks to the aid of a 3% swing on Diebold voting machines, received 9.11% of the vote in three different towns. Coincidence or somebody's idea of a sick joke?

Ron Paul is the only remaining fragment of the Republican conscience; willing to admit their mistakes. But the rest are interested in who is the moist bloodthirsty, so that's way more entertaining. Rudy is the brightest and the most dangerous of this bunch. If he can win Florida, he could go all the way.

My money has been on the Clintons from the beginning. -They've had 8 years to spread the wealth among their friends. Those same friends can expect a rerun. -The economy was relatively healthy during the Clinton years - big plus with the economy a major issue. -Voters think they are getting an experienced team. -During her years in the Senate, Hillary was the parties best fundraiser. -They know the game and they play it more mercilessly than anybody else. They are the most calculating cunning couple this country has ever seen. The primaries are just the side show to give Americans the illusion that there is real competition in elections.

Ron Paul is the only remaining fragment of the Republican conscience; willing to admit their mistakes. I got baptized into political chicanery when Barry Goldwater ran against Lyndon Johnson. Johnson trashed the hell out of Goldwater with charges he would eliminate Social Security and get us into war. You know the rest of the story. Paul is an unknown to the vast majority of voters, so it's easy to make false charges stick. Of course, he'll lose, but he showed the power of the Internet.

After watching this travesty tonight, I am completely convinced: Its time for revolution. Our republic is subverted daily by these corporate news outlets who've decided from which pool of candidates the hoi polloi will choose, and our government allows this proto-fascist slight of hand to persist. The whole system is broken and I'm ready to throw the baby out with the bath water.
There must be others out there that agree.

These dragged out primaries ARE a travesty. But they serve the political class as a distraction to the mess they made of the economy and the ME. The system IS broken, but sadly Americans haven't suffered enough to throw these sociopaths out of office.

RIDE ON I once woke up my exwife from a dead sleep. Burned on the way out. I knew it was death gas, so I bunched the covers tight around me. She turned over in the middle of a dream and bolted upright from a dead sleep, "Oh....MY.....GOD!!" as we both bolted from the bedroom. That one still makes me smile.

Favorite moment of the night, the Fox reporter, with a gleam in his eyes and almost a giggle in his voice, asks Ron Paul if he is electable, viable? While the others on the stage are still laughing approvingly at the Republican operative's question, Ron Paul treats them all to a verbal wedgie with his answer about borrowing $10 billion from the Chinese in order to give $2 billion to Musharraf..... Ron Paul is crazy....crazy like a fox!

firedoglake.com "And that in turn is why Paul enjoys so much support among the far-right racists and conspiracy theorists out there. These range, as Sara has noted, from David Duke and the Stormfront folks to the neo-Confederates, tax protesters, and Birchers -- all believers in the "New World Order," all fans of Ron Paul. This shows up, for instance, in the unusual level of support that Paul enjoys among members of the Constitution Party -- Howard Phillips' far-right entity that was a significant promoter of the militia movement in the 1990s. Indeed, listed among the leading supporters of Paul's presidential bid this year are Chuck Baldwin, the 2004 Constitution Party Vice Presidential candidate, and Jim Clymer, the Constitution Party chairman."

There was a story in the last two days about some guys taking a dead person with them to cash a check. I think I've identified the body of the deceased....it had to have been Fred Thompson. And Fox's "undecideds" went for Thompson. I suppose if "none of the above" isn't a choice, a dead guy will do.

RIDE ON I've read W is quite the fart cutter and fan. It must be tough to be an aide and have to laugh at one fart after another. And you KNOW W would do it intentionally in an elevator too. Be honest. :-)
On topic, Paul was strong tonight.
All the other terror talk bored me to death. Why they want to help Al Qaeda 'terrorisze' us by emphasizing it over and over and over again is doing Al Qaeda's bidding. Don't they get that fact? You can't be terrorized by terrorists unless you let fear creep in and rule your existence. Best thing we could have done with Bin Laden is hunt him while we go on about our lives with a President telling us "We have nothing to fear but fear itself", as FDR told us when we were fighitng all around the world and our lives depended on it.

I just got off the phone with one of my best friends, who's wealthy and a Paul supporter. He's looking into the racism charges. My buddy's really hot girlfriend is from Haiti with mocha toned skin. Oops on Paul if the reports on his newsletters are true. If so, he just lost all respect from me and made me view his other stances in a wider context, that's for sure. I'm an Obama voter, but I feel bad for Paul's supporters if these reports are true.

....and those who have been around Paul for years and years (friends and not so friends) are reporting they've never heard a word or body language from Paul to indicate he is racist. Paul's heroes....Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Ghandi......for a long long long time.

If the ghostwriter has any respect for Paul and hope for the political future of the anti-state, anti-war movement that has coalesced around him, he'd do well to step forward and take responsibility. (From the New Republic linked article) That would be the only right thing to do on the author's part. It's so hard to believe he didn't know about this. Didn't anyone call him or write to him and say, 'Did you really say this?" Still, dirty politics is dirty politics. I guess we'll know the truth in short order.

having watched the debates, it is my feeling that mccain and paul were clearly the winners, however, the media does not like these two so they will probably go by the wayside. too bad for u.s. i'm not even closely matched to either of them, nor any of the other candidates so i'm speaking with a truly open mind. come to think of it, i don't even have a candidate in the debates!

"Perhaps you should learn more about me before making declarative statements that concern me." He's right. You should know Rex got banned from the DR for being such a worthless prick. The verbal vandal never really added much to the discussions, just tried to shit them up, even literally one night, when he blogged, totally fucked up, from the crapper, giving us all play-by-play of the grunts and plops. After lots of warnings, he stormed off, along with some other misanthropes to start the greatest political website in their own mind, the PWZ. Trouble was, there was no balance, and they started eating their own. Rex started pissing off...well, everybody on the site. Barely a week went by where there wasn't a feud, replete with recriminations and, at times, accusations of sabatoge. More and more left and didn't come back. Now, PWZ has met it's demise, and Rex hasn't anywhere else to go, so he comes back here as Asshammer and Dethpud (and a few others) and compliments himself that way. He also has claimed to have changed his ways, yet he accused me of being a liar for bringing up an incident which Rex claims never happened, although he apologized to me for it months ago. Some change. Though maybe he has changed. The old Rex apologized to me. The "new" Rex called me a liar and now claims it never happened. But that's Rex. Jerk, Liar, Asshole. And proud of it.

Everytime I see these Republican candidates in a debate the more they scare the hell out of me (same with most of the Democrats except for Edwards). The ONLY one with any common sense on that stage tonight was Ron Paul -- precisely why Fox wanted to shut him up and/or make him appear foolish. Fox did not succeed.
Posted by CalifChris at 2008-01-11 02:37 AM | Reply | Flag: Flag: (Choose)FunnyNewsworthyOffensiveAbusive
Ron Paul needs a revolution and then coronation to do anything he said. He would have to be King because no one will work with him. The Fox News stooge (focus) group went for Willard 100%. Fox is just continuing the "anyone but McCain" pump. No one "won" the debate. Paul is a huge distraction from understanding the real differences in the others. I did love Huck's answer to the woman/marriage question. The "true" conservatives showed their shallow values by pumping Mitt. It's time to buck up and support the only one that will get in and do the job. McCain is the strongest. The dream team is McCain/Huck, Rudy on Homeland Defense, Fred as AG. Let Paul keep dreaming what he would do if he were king. Let Mitt spend his remaining millions doing something else to make himself feel good. Enough said.

As an aside, and somewhat on topic. I usually end up reading the debate transcripts more often then I actually see the debates. It's funny how different the perspective is. www.thestate.com It's much easier to distiniguish the "real answers" from the mealy mouthed politics and platitudes.

Speaking as a Republican, Rep. Ron Paul may not have very much primary season electability within the conetext of the silly, rah-rah, "USA! USA!," neo-"conservative" jamboree that has been substituted for the authentic Republican Party, but that's essentially a badge of honor. If the GOP were so fortunate as to have Dr. Paul as their nominee, however, he'd be a very electable candidate, seeing as how he's the only GOPer who could attract supporters from the Democratic Party, as well as independents of all stripes, disaffected paleo-conservatives, and most of the smaller ("third") political parties. Ron Paul is the only Republican who could conceivably carry California or Vermont, for example.
I will vote for Ron Paul in the California Republican Presidential primary on February 5th, not so much because I still hold out any hope of his being the GOP nominee, but rather to encourage him to run on an independent or "third party" ticket in November. I think the supporters of Ron Paul, Patrick Buchanan, Tom Tancredo, and other dissenting Republicans, should get together and field a nominee in 2008 for the explicit purpose of ensuring that the Republican ticket goes down to ignominious defeat. And we should do it again in 2012, and every other fourth year, until the Republican Party is forced to face reality: They can not win as long as they continue to nominate candidates who are grossly unacceptable to libertarians, paleo-conservatives, Constitutionalists, and other patriotic elements that once were part of the Reagan coalition.

I thought Mike Huckabee, as usual, came off as very likeable. Ron Paul tells it like it is about our most pressing problems. John McCain surely is a great American, but he lost my respect by shilling for Bush over the war (having lived through Vietnam he more than anyone should have been sounding warning bells before we invaded). Anyway, Those were my favorites from last night. Although I'm not voting in the GOP primary, I want to be informed and not make comments that are ill informed. I'm interested in this race and really want to know where everyone stands on everything (or in Romney's case where he stands today)
